I feel really bad for Faust. Obviously, she is not 100% responsible for everything in the show, but she got the ball rolling. Hasbro's restricting creative freedom must've really sucked to deal with and she's probably still mad.

Her words were for Twilight to be Celestia's successor. For all we know, that could mean her teaching a pony about the values of friendship rather than being a ruler, but we'll never know what she truly meant. I also want to know what she had in mind for the cutie marks of the CMC, what with their designs and such. The purple heavily contrasts with Applebloom's color scheme, and the symbols in the center hint what their special talents were "originally" going to be, but we never see the talents put into practice. It's one of my biggest pet peeves with the direction they decided to go with the show.

I think the writers just didn't know what to do with the CMC once they found their special talent, so they basically gave them all the same special talent that basically makes them do what they were doing before, but doing it for other ponies instead. The marks in the center are basically to prevent any backlash they may receive from the bronies because they obviously didn't go with what was intended. Even though Sweetie Belle has a musical note, we never see her doing something like a musical jig, even though Applebloom has an apple cutie mark she still helps around the farm in the same way she did in the past, and Scootaloo doesn't do anything remarkable with her scooter anymore, or whatever a feather and lightning bolt is supposed to mean.

Would they really need to go separate ways though? The mane 6 all of their own unique talent, yet they were bound together by the elements, and the thrones in Twilight's castle seem to imply that they'll never grow apart. Certainly they could give the CMC their own marks but still have CMC episodes.

They wouldn't necessarily though from the episode where babseed got her cutiemark, it was always a fear and let's not forget the episode where everyone started doing new stuff on their own. That seems to suggest that they may be growing apart.
