Well fuck me, it’s been a really shitty disastrous year to put it lightly. There is no lack of heart amongst the lads, yet the team have just not turned up on the games that mattered. I’ve been here for quite some time. I’ve seen the best we’ve ever been and now I’ve seen the worst. To tell the truth though the last two cups have left me pretty deflated. Given recent retirements I don’t feel it would be fair for me to quit completely and leave the few remaining guys with even more to do, which is why I’d still like to offer my help and guidance to anyone left and anyone new for the time being, and hopefully pass my experience on. This just hurts deep after being here seeing some of the best divegrass we’ve played, only to see the team I’ve loved for years just not deliver on the day.
Magic Blue might have said this already, but if you’re interested in joining then please feel free to contact him, or even me since we’re all in the same team. If you are not short of free time (especially at weekends) and are a positive person with enthusiasm and desire to see /mlp/ return to the better days, then we’d love to hear. Having someone to test with for my Friendship Tests team for however long I decide to remain would be welcome, as well as extra potential live managers for the main /mlp/ team.
This is definitely going to be a serious rebuilding year, which means we need a fresh injection of enthusiasm and desire to push forward and drag ourselves out of this hole. I’d love to see and feel the good times I remember return.
Regrettably I’ll be unable to answer anything immediate by the time I’ve posted this so MB will answer anything for now. I have to be up at 3:30am tomorrow, so in another five and a half hours for me. I’ve been completely shattered for the last two weeks given a series of random poor shifts on short notice and then the awful cup run. I should still be able to see any future threads though. Good night nevertheless.

It's ok lad. You have your highs and lows.

One thing tho. Take Twilight and beat her every day in a dark hole in the ground for at least a week.

The amount of times we lost due to her choking was unacceptable.

Here we go.

GG to /sci/, they played well. We didn't, so much.

I've said much of this already but I'm terribly sorry about the way this cup has turned out, as well as this whole run since Winter. We're trying to make changes and learn from what we've done wrong this cup. There are things both publicly visible, like livemanaging, and behind the scenes, like testing and organization, that we need to improve.

A lot of that involves leadership. We have a bit of a vacuum right now with old managers leaving and new managers (me) trying to find their feet. The folks at the head of the team (me and Emulpee and Darkbow) were not as well organized or as well coordinated as team has, I believe, been in the past, and we're going to try and change that going forward. We're going to put our heads together and figure things out.

I can't promise anything but trying to improve and trying to fix what went wrong. >>30129487
was an embarrassing error by a newbie and I have no explanation other than... being a newbie. I know that's not an excuse but it is what it is. That's an area I need to improve.

We have disappointed you pretty badly, and we'll try to figure out what went wrong and fix it from here.

How can one forget multiple 90+4's. Even harder to forget when Cena did even better than that with a 90+7 to save his team in a much better fashion.

I just typed a long explanation of what I meant, then realised after reading through it I probably don't actually have any idea what im talking about, so rather than try to sound smart, I'll just say it wasn't all technically him by himself. Player coordination and whatnot getting that ball to him for those +4's, it was all him dancing around the defense by himself.

What little of that there was this cup, kind of weird the chokes were highlighted especially to Twilight, despite her two goals.

So at the risk of probably a little too into Deviantart territory, I feel a little compelled to ask... Is there anyway we can redesign Best Pony?

Like, I get the Mare Do Well thing, keep it vague on who Best Pony truly is (even if who you think it is is also a player), and I love the idea, it's one of the things I don't want to change ever. Perfect team Captain and such.

But what I mean is Mare Do Well in that episode was kind of seen as a super hero of sorts, right? Or a hero in general at least, but the design and such implies something super.
Super Heroes frequently go through design changes over time, most of which don't change the characters at all. Or sometimes the person under the mask changes entirely and they have a new design for the hero identity to reflect that (example: Batman - Bruce Wayne and Batman Beyond - Terry McGinnis).
Several Anon's, not all, have seen Best Pony choking a little, wanted her sacked or demoted, general angry bullshittery when they see the slightest form of failure. I personally don't want her demoted or sacked, but the illusion of change kind of tickles me when the super hero logic is applied.

There's no official alternate design for her... but is there any chance we can come up with some sort of redesign for Best Pony that is still reflective of what she is?

Missing my point. It doesn't change the idea that it can be anyone. Just gives a fresh look to it.
Similar logic to any hero that wears a mask. Anyone can think anyone is under there, they can even think it's one person, even if that hero identity has been living way longer than anyone probably could.

In this sense, Best Pony can still be whoever you want it to be, but... Fuck, Rarity thought the look was outdated or some shit and they need a better look to reflect why they're still the Best.

A tester who doesn't know what he's doing is useless. Manpower has never really been the issue for /mlp/. I think the current problem is a lack of experience from the new guys and a lack of leadership from the old guys.

I feel like I figured out the meta in a matter of weeks during the friendship tests, and it really doesn't seem that different from before. Then /mlp/ somehow got stuck with a questionable formation and people ran weird tactics with it, resulting in zero pointing a Babby Cup in a group with a double wooden spoon team and two fetus teams, one of which hasn't won a game since 2015.

I guess once you hit rock bottom, you can't go anywhere but up.

Figuring out what went wrong and how it can be fixed should be the top priority for everyone.

Nobody ever thinks it's necessary or thought hero designs were bad, but they do them anyway for loads of reasons. Illusions of change, potential to look better, the one wearing it was sick of it and wanted something that let them turn their head or some shit instead.

But fine, was just a thought.

It's not like they didn't listen, I figured my help wasn't necessary since they didn't need /myteam/ in the gauntlet, and I didn't remotely put as much time in as the managers did.

>>30130301

All I'm saying is I think a lack of experience is a big problem in the current team, and getting in another inexperienced tester isn't going to be helpful at all. But it really depends on the mentality of a person. Don't let me stop you from getting more testers/managers. Just get rid of this idea that you're going to be super useful by just running the game a bunch of times for the managers. You need to have a drive to figure things out, to want to understand the game and win based off knowledge. I've never really been proud of doing an insane number of random tests. You can't brute force PES. It's like trying to solve a math problem by punching in random numbers. The chance of getting it right is astronomically small. You need to figure out what your opponent is going to use, and then you got to figure out what you're going to use against that. It's that simple. If you can't figure out what your opponent is going to do, you're just firing shots in the dark. I always figured I was good at doing that. At times I felt like I was a better manager for the opposing team than I was for /mlp/.

When you are good at predicting what likely tactics your opponent is going to use against you, when you are good at countering those tactics, and when you are good at making your own team unpredictable by not playing the same style over and over again, then the only way you are going to lose is if the other team is even better at it than you are or if you get PES'd.

There's a reason certain teams are always near the top while others are always near the bottom.

>>
>>30130481
So I play PES outside of the cup (i know, >actually playing PES), and while I know the difference between AI and player controlled teams are huge, there's still some strategies and tictac combos that make sense to play with.

It seems that the current management didn't understand that at all. Testing against what opponents do and prepping counter-strats is fine and all, but this is down to what looks like lack of understanding of how the more advanced aspects of the game actually works by the management.

Man, I went and took my dog for a walk afterwards, get my morning started with fresh air and whatnot. Took a route that goes over some local ovals, and it's the weekend, so there was a bunch of people there with some games of actual divegrass happening.
Couldn't help but be disgusted at how the keeper didn't have a giant hand for a head, the strikers weren't wearing capes, one of the defenders wasn't a car, and the referee wasn't a FAT SUMMABITCH! And they were kicking around a BALL instead of a severed weeb head or a grenade or something!
Worst of all is that in the entire minute it took me to cross the place, there wasn't a single murder that resulted in a yellow card!

It won our gauntlet, though, which involves a lot of tests and is the best method we've had so far to pick a formation. We're not going to look at our results and say "nah, let's NOT pick the one with the best record." What that means is we need a better gauntlet going forward. One thing we tried this time was giving teams the opportunity to make changes halfway through the gauntlet, in order to try and find a formation that might be flexible as well as strong, so it's possible that we were testing which manager was able to make the best adjustments rather than which formation was the best base. Figuring out a more reliable test system isn't easy, but we do have time to figure it out and this is a pretty major priority.

>The /his/ game
We had good results in testing against several /his/ formations. We didn't end up testing against the exact formation they ended up starting on, but we did identify it as an anti-longball tactic in chat and our non-longball tactic did indeed end up being the best counter (you can see this when the team improves dramatically after the last tactical change leading to the Twilight goal). The lesson here is that I need to think more clearly in the livemanaging hotseat which comes with time, because we did have the right tactic prepared, I just didn't have the presence of mind to switch to it quickly. MAYBE more tests being run would help too, on the chance we could hit their exact formation. (But as BGP has said there are too many variables to do this reliably, and you have to judge what the team will probably run and test vs that.)

>The /n/ game
Communication problems hurt this game. Different managers were involved with testing, making the export, and livemanaging, which meant that no one manager was completely versed in everything. This meant several conflicting opinions about the game and none of them ended up being properly implemented, which is why our changes probably seemed strange that game. The fact that /mlp/ management has no one single person in charge hurt us here and it's something we're going to change going forward, although we're not completely sure of the details yet. But ensuring that one manager is the absolute "buck stops here" person is important going forward.

>The /sci/ game
I'm gonna take some flak for this but I don't think we fucked up too bad here. We had good test results against almost exactly what /sci/ ran and were confident in them. The team played well, especially in the second half, and I think the changes I made were reasonable.I think this might have been one of the games you just have to take the L, but if we'd done better in the other games it wouldn't have killed us. You need room for error in PES and we gave ourselves none.

The way I see it, the problem with the testing gauntlet is that it's useless info if all the tested tactics are shit. You need external tactics to compare too as well. Next time a gauntlet happen, also add in the top tactics of current PES, say the top 2 of Winter or the Winter and Spring winner. If what you guys come up with can't deal with them, then what you have should be scrapped or revised heavily.

The gauntlet was designed to serve to purposes: provide some objective measure of the effectiveness of an export and to circumvent the fighting and shitflinging over what type of export to use, which had been /clop/'s previous decision-making process that was no good for anyone.

When building exports, the managers test against top external teams, so that they have some basis for assessing their tactics. Just testing against each other the whole time would be pointless, I agree. External teams aren't part of the gauntlet itself because /mlp/ wants to run its own tactics, not copy somebody else's. In the scenario you outline, where you throw /sp/ in the gauntlet and /sp/ wins, there really wouldn't be adequate time at that stage to go back to the drawing board and nobody would want to just copy /sp/. At best, you could cobble together a hard counter to /sp/, but that wouldn't necessarily be a better export.

>it's useless info if all the tested tactics are shit

This is true, the gauntlet product is only as good as the ingredients you put into it. The conceit was that each of the /mlp/ managers is knowledgeable enough to build a decent export, so this wouldn't happen. The gauntlet is meant to find the best export, not the only good export. However, one problem this season may have been the commitment to tactical diversity. Because you run into a variety of formations in the cup, you want your export to be reliable against a wide array of strategies. So, /clop/ designated different formation types (4-4-2, 4-2-4, 3-4-3, 5-3-2, etc.) and each manager picked one and built an export around that. Now, one vulnerability to doing the gauntlet that way is that even a shoddy 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 should be able, on average, to beat something lopsided like a 3-3-4 or 5-4-1, so you may come out the other side without adequately stress testing the winning export. For that reason, I've recommended that FT5 drop the forced diversity setup and run only tried and true formations and explore diversity within those frameworks, rather than commit space to formation types that will never win. A differently arranged 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 with proper testing behind it in the gauntlet could well have exposed the /sdb/ setup before /his/, /n/, and /sci/ did.

There's no point in having for instance a /fit/ copy in the tests, because when a manager makes a formation, they should test that formation against the top teams of the previous cup in order to make sure that what they are making is at least competitive.

Say you put a blatant /fit/ copy in the friendship tests and it ends up winning. Then what? You go to the cup with a blatant /fit/ copy? That's kind of lame.
>>
>>30134718
Sure would have been terrible to copy /fit/ , lucky we went with L A A N G B A A L. When all we needed to do was get out of the fucking Babbies.
>>
>>30133062
>>30133066

Well thought out.

I think that "buck stops here" is best leading up to a match. Whoever is appointed as the live manager for a match works together with other managers and testers to put together an export with the best possible chances and tools of winning. However, once match day comes around, there needs to be a clear chain of command.

Based on this, I withdraw my call for an external public meeting, though you're still free to hold one anyway.

Also, I think the suggestion that you temporarily change your name to MagicLime during next fetus/megababby is hilarious.

>>30134638
>>30134664

It wasn't conceit that you assumed that every manager had a working tactical theory: it felt true during PES15 and PES16. All y'all had legit ideas for running the whole team, and testing was the best way to find out what worked and what didn't, rather than just having hot opinions.

It's still true that testing will do that, but with all the retirements, the problem now is that this assumption is no longer quite valid. So the needs of the team are to develop a better tactical feel for the way the game works. If that means scaling back testing a bit, so be it.

Testing is a tool, and a powerful one. But any great tool can be misused.

>>
>>30134763
>the only thing more terrible than getting fetus'd
>>
>>30134836
Agreed, but that's why they test and beat the previous cup winner prior to entering the gauntlet. If an export struggles against several top cup teams, it shouldn't end up in the gauntlet in the first place.
>>
>>30134664
>forced diversity setup
Yeah, I think this might be one factor. /mlp/ has often been memed at for running common formations, but then so has every other team doing it, and half the teams run four-four-fucking-two because it fucking works decently well. There'll always be some current meta formations like JB's 3-6-1 or whatever he ran that work well if you know what you're doing, but the good ones tend to start from reasonable bases.

Also, was there actually no Winter '17 /mlp/ export in the gauntlet? I remember there being something about /eqg/ usually running that but not doing so this time. If that's the case I'd say that's a major oversight and shouldn't be done again, because I think that the export was fairly decent in Winter and might actually have worked better in this Cup than what was finally chosen. And I don't think using a former export and tweaking it if it does well would be against the idea of producing your own exports.

Correct, the Winter 17 /mlp/ export was not entered into the gauntlet and /eqg/ ran an alternative setup, which was a break from tradition. One of the reasons for doing the gauntlet is to make sure that the new export is better than the old one, which you can't do if you omit the old export or fail to give it the same managerial attention as every other export. I've shared my thoughts about this with the managers. It's something I've hammered about every season.

Managers should be involved in testing and tactics, otherwise the head is disconnected from the body and will make stupid decisions. /mlp/ doesn't need an Update Guy.

BGP's officially doing nothing and is still connected, I obviously don't know what Ugoy has been doing (probably nothing or nodding everything off) but I don't think the whole concept is bad because of this one example. I think someone experienced guiding people could be more efficient than new guys or tactics guys (which I assume Emulpee is mostly) trying to figure out some new approach and just praying that it works the next time. Consider PMB's inputs in such a position maybe to have a second opinion or whatever.

Also I don't think he needs to be listed as a manager for that, or listed at all.

I absolutely despise your board and have despised it since its inception. I wanted it to be /fur2/ in 2012 and I want it removed more than even /pol/ now.

But it's really shitty for the streamer to express and feel that kind of thing on-air, especially directly after something like what happened this cup and after that match, and I am honestly genuinely sorry for that. I only hate 'you' as a board, not individually (unless you're a cunt), and it's not fair or cool to people to reveal power level live like I did briefly. These are long-seated and deep-rooted feelings that aren't cup-centric and I'd really rather be honest with you and apologize and try not to let it happen again than to just leave it sitting there, take it or leave it.

I mean, it's okay to start on it, but if you don't go ahead with it you're in trouble
Keeping gegen on while your players are already tired is worse, so it was reasonable to take it off, but they wouldn't have been as tired if they weren't starting on gegen
>>
>>30136053
Gegenpress makes your players run and chase whoever has possession of the ball and press as hard as possible. It's like watching 7 year-olds play football. If your opponent is playing something like possession, low support range, and a narrow formation, then I can see gegenpress being good at breaking them up and disrupting their play. That's a very limited application. If the opponent is playing quick counter, high support range long passes (see /n/), then it's suicide.

IF
they decide to revamp the team's tatics and put a medal player on the "defensive midfielder" position, i shall invite you to call him
"NOT CANON"

board culture wise, "NOT CANON" is the defensive argument everybody uses in regards to equestria girls and IDW comics (or those who only accept show canon to be the only option)
now, i did not think about what is supposed to be his appearence.

Three strike system.

First strike was Winter
Second strike was Spring

If they fuck up in the fetus as well, the managers need to quit. They already took the team from the absolute top to rock bottom. I don't think /mlp/ should ever sack managers, but there should be an honor system where managers can be expected to hit the road on their own volition after they consistently fail with no improvement.

Managers don't owe you victories. There's a lot of things you can control about a team, but winning isn't one of them. Great teams can lose and many do.

Managers can control the roster and their job is to ensure that the board is faithfully represented and that a legal export is produced so that the board can participate. Those are the things you can sack a manager over. If the team looks great, if the polls are conducted regularly and competently, and if our exports are submitted timely, then the managers are doing their job and you should support them.

It makes no sense to fire somebody over something that is out of their hands, it at least not fully in their hands.

Every team has their lucky moments, /mlp/ included. But luck can be forced by having a good formation that has a solid offense and by using tactics that play into "lucky moments".

/mlp/ did not have a solid formation this cup. The offense was very questionable in every game, and the consistent running of gegenpress meant that the players were so tired in the late game that there was no chance of mounting a comeback either.

If you look at this cup and play off this bad result as if it's just bad luck, you're just setting yourself up for another failure in autumn. I can only hope that the managers find a way to get their shit together and realize what they did wrong the past couple of weeks.

You can see who is an active manager at any time by checking out the team's wiki page. https://implyingrigged.info/wiki//mlp/. Keep in mind that only managers need to be listed on the wiki, so our testers will not be listed.

>what does the "clop council" do to help them aside making pointless panels.
Wew lad.

I can help clarify. /clop/ isn't a council, to start with, which is a term I associate more with "group of active managers" specifically rather than "group of people" in general.

Historically, NBD and the other old managers and testers used to communicate via email. This was an inefficient way of having group conversations, and so eventually they created a Skype group to facilitate better communication. To meme on the "circlejerk" thing, they called it /circleclop/ and later truncated it to /clop/. Over time, strangers become friends, and as people retired from official positions within the team, they stayed in the Skype group to stay in touch with the guys they knew and to keep up with the team's developments.

Functionally, /clop/ is a repository of institutional knowledge. Some stuff is written down, but the majority of "how this works," "what happened," and "why we do something this way" is all in people's heads. Retired people stay in the group so that they're available to the new people who may want to ask questions and get guidance as circumstances may require. I've seen a few posts here complaining that the retired managers left the new guys to the wolves without sharing any of our knowledge and that just isn't the case. I personally try to straddle the line between "being helpful" and "being overbearing" and I'm not always good at keeping to one side over the other, but nobody could accuse me of being a non-presence in /clop/. For example, when it came time to organize the poll for this season, MB was fuzzy on how to do it and so a couple of us explained how we structured things in the past. Retired staff weigh in on tactics if they're following the testing, offer suggestions on how to handle PR stuff, and so on. Advice can sometimes be contradictory depending on who's offering it, so as in life the active managers have to choose which pieces of advice to act on and which ones to ignore. You can offer guidance, but can't force somebody to take it (and there are times when they shouldn't).

If you're looking for who is accountable for the team, that's the managers. Testers are secondarily accountable, but when you talk about accountability you are talking about decision-making, and that's whoever is on the wiki. It doesn't make sense to cast blame on retired people, who neither make decisions nor are being relied upon to do grunt work like testing. The panel was a fun thing that some of us were available to host and that some people said they wanted. Complaining about that in this context is like saying "I wish those guys would come out of retirement and stop living their lives doing fun stuff." That's an awful lot of entitlement talking. The cup exists as a passion project because people get involved for the fun of it. Enjoy the things people volunteer to create. If you miss something, that's okay too. There are a ton of things about the cup that I miss But, it's a waste of energy to get angry when people move on when this entire thing is meant to be a hobby first and foremost. I'm not angry at Tony for retiring, for instance, or NBD. I miss their participation, I wish they'd come back, but I'm not angry at them and I don't blame them for things that happened after their departure.

>I wonder who he argued with over.

There are three registered managers, out of which two (though after this cup I guess it's only one) are livemanagers. Then there are the testers.
There was no argument over what tactics should have been used in the /n/ game, just miscommunication which resulted in the questionable changes.

>>30139108
The /his/ game gegen can't really be justified, the tactics did well against some /his/ setups but not the one they ran on stream and it shouldn't have been used. My memory might be wrong but I think that was mostly the first change into the possession long. That simply should have never been played against what /his/ used.

/n/ game, gegen was prepared against their possession wide preset, where it played really well because it disrupted their plays. Tactics against their counter shortpass featured exactly 0% gegenpress. /n/ surprised us by playing counter longball, shit was on fire and miscommunication probably fucked us in the ass. Not saying we would've won otherwise, but maybe we wouldn't have at least lose by much. Who knows.

/sci/ game, gegen was present because it did really well in testing. I'm talking lose one game out of 10 well. /sci/ even chose to pick the one formation it did best against.

I personally don't share the aversion to running gegen all game, because the most affected players get subbed, CBs and medals can usually take it for 90 minutes (shitty conditions aside), and I have seen plenty of comebacks made on the backs of players dead due to gegen. Feel free to yell at me for that if you wish.

Anytime I made a decision as manager (or make one now), I ask myself, "if I weren't involved with the team and was purely a fan, would I enjoy this?" If the answer is yes, I support doing whatever. It's why I was often an advocate for various banter goal horns over the years (like the 8-bit music vs. /vr/) and it's why I supported doing the panel. If I hadn't been sitting behind a mic, I would've been sitting in the audience. That was sufficient justification to do it, to my mind.

The problem is, fans aren't a hive mind and tastes differ. So while some anons were uncomfortable with it and expressed their distaste, I hear you, it's also true that a lot of anons supported it and many are looking forward to seeing the video of it.

The panel has got nothing to do with the comfy town hall. My objection to 24/7 default hosting of comfy, and that's my specific a beef, is that it's off topic. My autistic rules lawyer brain thinks the 4CC channel should, by default, be reserved for 4CC content and only show other stuff as exceptions occasionally. That's got nothing to do with whether hosting the panel, which wasn't streamed on the 4CC channel and would've been on topic if it had been, was a good or bad idea. I also think, purely as a matter of administrative policy, that /merit/ should avoid arrangements that invite abuse and I feel 24/7 default hosting is vulnerable to being exploited by people who are only looking for an audience rather than wanting to contribute something worthwhile. All the comfy lads could be good dudes streaming good content for selfless reasons and I'd still say the policy should be not to host comfy 24/7 strictly as a matter of setting expectations and enforcing standards. Again, that's not philosophically or ethically connected to the panel in any way.

There are still 11 threads ahead of us. Make one in an half an hour if we're definitely going to die, no need to otherwise.

The point was more that you cared enough about the "sanctity" of the cup so much that you wanted to interfere and try to stop people having fun.

This is not far off the philosophy of people seeing you doing that panel, pierceving it as "abusing" the popularity of the cup (and a specific team) too much than the average team for your own personnal fun. Akin to when /pol/ post about the cup about normies.

I know there are a few differences but thats the overall feeling, most people don't care enough to dig deeper into it. In the end it didn't matter because both side said fuck off and kept having fun anyway.
