I'm fine with the new look. Like it, even. And in the moment, as the blowoff to a season finale some 5 years in the making, it was a cool visual to punctuate with. I was hype AF watching it unfurl live, all animu n' shit. But making it a blanket statement IS a bad message and DOES rub me the wrong way a little. Sociology doesn't work like that, everybody's different and there are exceptions to every rule. It's not even a deal-breaker to me, just a nitpick. Make both phenotypes viable instead of forcing one over the other and that nitpick's gone.

This, unironically. To give you an idea of character development we've seen, compare s01e01 Fluttershy to s07e05 Fluttershy. Two different characters. Similar trends, although not quite as intense, between the other members of the Mane 6 are there too, especially with Twilight and Rainbow Dash. Point is, we're beating a dead horse here. Time to bring in a fresh set of flanks. Starlight and Trixie are new to the friendship game, as well as Maud and whoever else they plan on bringing on board.

You can't have your cake and eat it. If you still want your ponies, they're not gonna be just Twilight and Pals anymore. This has honestly been a long time coming, and if season 8 has any sense, we'll see as little of Twilight and the mane 6 as possible.

It's weird because she's a lot more nuanced than the Mane 6. Or rather 5 of the Mane 6, Twilight's always been a lot more grounded whereas the other fill cartoon archetypes. That straight-man role has always been her appeal to me, and Starlight hits the same broad strokes only inverted for novelty. e.g. being a starved extrovert instead of a content introvert. She's a hot mess to be sure, a ball of insecurities and neuroses more tightly knotted than any of the M6's were, but instead of despairing she acknowledges the problem and strives to self-improve. She'll fuck up, she'll stumble big time, but she always gets right back up & keeps moving forward undeterred. I find that endearing. Inspirational, even. I don't like her MORE than theMane 6, per se, but she has so many flaws to work through that she's definitely the most interesting to watch IMO. I watched my fave poners do the same over the course of 6 seasons, and I'm proud of how they've grown up. I'd quite like to have another go 'round on the ride.
