No I'm cool with zepplins. There just used to be more a sense that Equestria was its own unique place with its own rules. With the introduction of Manehattan they've slowly diluted those aspects of the show until it just feels... I don't know. In season 1 there was an episode about ponies literally running across Equestria to clear away the leaves, and in season 2 there was an episode that was a play about the bizzare founding of Equestria. They encountered Hydra and Manticore. In A Flurry of Emotions Twilight went to what was very clearly a modern day toy store. Again, I'm not saying that there is no fantasy anymore, I mean look at Gauntlet of Fire or Celestial Advice or To Where and Back Again, but its become the exception not the rule.

It has and there is IMO.
Granted I'm counting character stuff like "Maud sets up a batcave", "Flurry's not such a shit after all", "Fluttershy achieves her logical endgoal AND WASN'T FUCKING SHY WTF", I'm finding it all about as satisfying as I did Griffonstone and Dragon lore and what have you.
Also maybe not "overarching plot" so much as "overarching theme", but it's all tinfoil haberdashery until the show proves me either right or wrong so whatever, we'll wait and see.

Let it go Anon. Your characters have been fleshed literally as much as they can be without just repeating the same episodes, which they already have several times already. Starlight and Trixie are ready to join a new group of friends in the same Equestria you know and love and learn something new, and that's something the current mane 6 can't do anymore. Let them go gracefully; this is like the deal of a lifetime, you get to keep having ponies without technically going the way of the Simpsons.

There's not going to be a new mane 6. This is a show meant to sell toys, and the mane 6 are the most marketable characters in the show. Pinkie Pie herself has pretty much become the de facto mascot of Hasbro's girl division.

Starlight and friends only exist as a backup crew so the writers don't have to worry about coming up with 24 unique stories surrounding characters that have starred in over a hundred stories already. I really can't see say, Maud, plastered all over a toy store the way Pinkie is today.

All it says he's doing is refusing to transform. That undermines Thorax automatically by showing the transformation can be resisted, which implies to others that it's not all it's cracked up to be.
My immediate thought was "moody teenager". Or "entrenched emo". Or "average ani/mlp/hucker". Most likely he's just some stroppy cynic who doesn't like change and wants things to go back to the way they were,
and learns to his surprise that he convinces everybody else that that's okay.

Well they've made a habit of using a new season to address complaints about the last season, so it's pretty likely IMO. It's the best reason they'd have for making this specific episode with this specific plot, "why can't black changelings just be good" was a doozy of an oversight.
The only other reason I can think of is because Vogel's salty and wants to fuck with /mlp/. But that gives both parties way too much credit to be likely IMO. Plus, messages that've addressed us directly were actually pretty reasonable about it by the end.
