Back in 2011 when Luna only had her one apperance there was this New Lunar Republic vs Solar Empire stuff going on, it was pretty big during its time but her changed apperance in S2 seemed to have killed it off. It just sorta vanished and no one said a word. Now all thats left are memories, like nyx

Damn, I loved this stuff back then.
I still like current Luna, but there was so much more potential for the series with S1 Luna being "Nightmare Moon without the dark magic drunkness".
Instead of that we got a soul-crushed, autistic and socially awkward Luna who seem happy to let her sister be the boss forever.

there was this old nintendo game I used to play called "Battalion Wars" and in it there's a army also named the "Solar Empire" (basically samurais with laser guns) so for the longest time I thought when memers talked about the Solar Empire, I thought they were talking about the faction from the game

Easy recipe for making a sympathetic character and having Celestia cast as the "bad guy". Yes, a lot of that is due to the constraints of the show, but when has that stopped this fandom from taking things and running with them?

The strange thing nowadays is that there seem to be people who genuinely think that not only was Nightmare Moon justified in her rebellion, but that she would have been actively better for Equestria. I never got that bunch, and they've only sunk deeper into it.
