Here's something I've been thinking, just a short theory that isn't worth making its own thread.

People often complain about how Celestia and Luna seem underpowered for what they are. They get beaten too easily by villains that should not be that powerful.

I think this can be explained by fatigue from raising and lowering the sun and moon and generally running the country. So far as we know, they are the only characters besides Discord that can do it (and Twilight, when she had their powers).

With the sisters making massive magical efforts over the course of a regular day, it makes sense that they could spend most of their time on the brink of magical exhaustion. They wouldn't have enough left in them to deal with a disaster without the elements, so they need to rely on other ponies.

Accepting this would make it even more amazing that Celestia was able to do both jobs. Either she did it herself through steel discipline, or she managed to take magic from others. I could easily imagine a grimdark fanfic where Celestia's school was created to serve as a giant reserve of magical energy.

Interesting theory. Especially the Sun could require a lot. Dealing with dreams + the moon could be somewhat equal but nobody been housekeeping dreams for about 1000 years since Celestia was busy with Moon+Sun.

Another thing we can add to the mix is that Celestia, focused on caring for her entire Kingdom for so long, has lost the "offensive edge" to her magic.
Specializing in taking care of Equestria over hundreds of years has simply caused her ability to inflict harm or do battle to wither and fade.

She can have her blessing running in the background over Equestria so Pegasus, Unicorn and Earth pony is healther, happier and more productive than they otherwise would have been. (We do see very few diseases, no cancer and premature deaths.)

Somewhat similar explanation could be used for Luna. Only as Nightmare moon mode she is able to do battle. Then her otherwise supressed offensive skills becomes large enough to to beat up Celestia, unless Celestia equips herself with the Elements of Harmony.

It's a thought, and if they'd run it that way from the beginning it might have actually been interesting. But the thing is, we've seen literally no sign of that sort of thing whatsoever - and, in fact, the Journal of the Two Sisters explicitly says that it's their link to sun and moon that lets Celestia and Luna re-energize themselves and be unaging.

Nor does it explain why they tip over to any old foe, or how Equestria managed before roving deus ex machina squads helpfully resolved everything, or why they display powers in one scene but then can't use them when push comes to shove, or why they seem to be straight up dumb in some moments. At a certain point, there is no other excuse but "lazy writing".

I'm of mixed mind.

One the one hand I want to be optimistic: The writers seem to have suddenly screwed their heads back on this season - Parental Glideance took the single most cringeworthy synopsis and made a pretty decent episode out of it - and part of me hopes that they'll somehow manage to do the same with the trainwreck of a synopsis we've been given for this.

But the majority of my mind still says that this episode is going to be fundamentally flawed. It's not even just Starlight "no magic limits" Glimmer (though that's a serious problem too) but the idea that the Sisters are actively and publicly arguing because they "don't appreciate each other"? Are you telling me that they literally learned nothing from the single most significant event to shape their lives in the past thousand years? That after being separated by loneliness and regret for a millennium, they still don't care enough for each other?

Working through the emotions invoked by the Banishment and appreciating each others' presence should be a huge part of both Celestia and Luna's characters; it should also be a tender, deep, and complicated process, not a setup for 22 minutes of body-swap, instant-resolved 'comedy'.

I suppose I've never let go of the idea that those "bonuses" were what made the show really good for both kids and adults alike - that, as it was said, "little girls aren't stupid" and that topics like that shouldn't be shied away from.

That said, it's not that I expected... I dunno, Shakespear or some other kind of ultra-deep exploration of their relationship. It's that they've gone in the diametric opposite of any rational development of that relationship; it's not just an absence of deep exploration, but a complete depredation instead.

It's not hard to imagine Celestia's thousand-year rule had no major threats. Remember that most of the villains that the 6 fought were previously defeated by Celestia and Luna, and they were only able to reappear because the Elements had new bearers now. In any case, before the mane 6, Celestia clearly had some ability to use the elements by herself.

Some of her imperfections make her more relatable.

I know not everyone likes the comics, or the characterization they gave her in the comics--but I can understand someone as lonely as she must be taking terrible risks to pursue a relationship with a good version of King Sombra from a parallel timeline. And I can be heartbroken for her when it doesn't work out, and she can no longer travel between timelines due to the dangers to which it exposes her nation.

And some people will say she was a stupid cunt to do this, and worse. I don't say I approve of her doing it. But I understand why she did it and I am not sure I wouldn't have done equally foolish and inappropriate things if I had to bear the burdens she's borne for centuries.

So they are character flaws--but understandable, relatable character flaws, that make her, to me, that much more sympathetic, precisely because she isn't a perfect ice-cold goddess sitting on a pedestal. She has feelings and needs, and lives each day with sorrow and terrible loneliness she hides from everyone around her. I want to give her a hug, if she'd let me.

There are stories in which Celestia was created, not born.

"Days of Wasp and Spider" is one. It's sufficiently well written to disturb me. I can't bear to watch innocents suffering, and Celestia and Luna suffer a lot. A whole lot. Enough that I can't finish it. The author is skilled but I love these characters too much.

I never post but I have to post something now because I feel crushed. I don't understand how the writers could write an episode on the premise of the royal sisters not appreciating each other. Wasn't Celestia so happy to have her sister back she was crying in literally the first fucking episode? Are you going to to tell me that these people didn't even watch the first fucking episode? Or that maybe I'm misinterpreting the emotions I thought I saw because I'm autistic? I would also think that if you spent 1000 years alone you might learn to appreciate company but I guess I'm just a retard. Never mind the fact that the episode is actually going to be focused on glimmer glammer, which is just a whole other layer of depressing. One of the most potentially interesting characters in the show and the most substantive characterization any of the people involved in writing for the episodes or the comics ever came up with is that she's an immature bitch who doesn't actually seem to care about anything.

We know, anon. It's a frustrating as fuck situation especially because of the sheer depth of story she has to explore. Yet the writers not only seem to be uninterested in exploring that, but are actively writing over the parts we did see.

That's not to say that her and Luna's relationship has to be perfectly smooth and flawless; it's certainly possible there are awkward, painful, and tender moments between them. But those moments would be exactly driven by caring so deeply for Luna now that she is back, not "Oh, you're finally here after a millennium of absence... let's squabble about inane bullshit".

I fell you. The fragile relationship between Celestia and Luna has been a big thing for me since day one. It's such a delicate thing and I could never imagine them being unappreciative towards each other, at least no more than casual disagreements. I know in a lot of fiction they are portrayed as sometimes even hostile to each other, holding grudges and all that, but I have never accepted that. For me it's somewhat sacred. Honestly, I couldn't really get past the initial premise of the episode. That both sisters could be so distant with each other after so long apart - the Banishment probably represents a vast majority and certainly defining emotional trauma of both of their lives - was just too far a stretch for me. That they didn't have any time to speak to each other also rang false - averaging 8 hours of sleep and assuming zero overlap between each their sleeping hours, they should still have had 8 hours a day when both were awake. Even if we assume both were very busy, or just still waking up/nearly falling asleep during part of those times - seriously, they couldn't find a single hour a day just to spend with each other?

I won't deny the writing and visuals - both silly and nightmarish - were top-tier, but that left me feeling like they were shiny wrapping over a rotten core - addressing a conflict that existed for the sole sake of pushing a conflict, rather than logically adding to their characters. Adding in Glim shoving her unwanted face into everything, and I don't think I enjoyed it nearly as much as others did.

It wasn't a full episode, but Season 7, Episode 1 had a satisfyingly long conversation between Celestia and Twilight.

I am torn. On the one hand, I can imagine Celestia being a bit different behind closed doors than the public face of utter serenity, mystery, and wisdom she shows. On the other hand, seeing her rolling on the floor laughing at her own jokes was a bit much. Also seeing her blurt out to Twiggles that all our headcanon for seven years about her being a brilliant chessmistress who arranged things cautiously and painstakingly years in advance so that Twilight would make friends, become able to use the Elements of Harmory, and help free Luna from her "Nightmare Moon" evil side? Yeah, no. That was all dumb luck, all of it, and it could all easily have ended with Twilight and friends dead. Or Luna dead. Or both. Or the whole planet frozen in permanent magical Fimbulwinter if NMM had succeeded. I just about bit my own tongue off when I saw that. And seeing that on the eve of NMM's return from her thousand year exile on the moon, or in the moon, or however that's supposed to work exactly, Sunbutt wasn't even thinking about the possible impending magical Ragnarok that could easily have ended all life on the planet. No, she was fretting about whether Twilight would have a safe journey. For reals? Apparently.

I adore Sunbutt and she has never gotten anywhere near enough screen time... but this all left me shaking my head sadly. Oh well, there's always fanfiction, right?

You're taking the episode in isolation.
Celestia's been shown to have at least one vision about future bad shit™, not super detailed but enough to let her know something's coming.
It stands to reason she's had similar visions about other things, and until otherwise disproved my headcanon is that she was the source of that Nightmare moon prophecy.
Also remember Celestia's got that sparkly realm where Twilight ascended, filled with windows showing various scenes she had no way of knowing about.
She's not flying COMPLETELY blind, but she's not some big manipulative chess master either.

Agreed. Right now they're trying to give Celestia and Luna both "just like you and me" character personas... and that's not actually bad. Hell, we've been asking for a "princesses take a day off to act like average ponies" or "daily lives of the Sisters" episode practically for as long as the show has been running.

The problem is that the writers, too, are taking it all in the absence of all other information. So you get them not just acting like "normal ponies" in some ways, but in ways where they absolutely should not. For instance, Celestia freaking out over Twilight going away doesn't make much sense because as >>30144049 pointed out (and Faust originally mentioned) Celestia is literally prescient and knows how to arrange shit before it happens. Hell, she knew the M6's cutie marks before they even got them - if she didn't arrange them coming together in the same little backwater town, then she damn well knew what it implied was coming and deliberately inserted Twilight as the 6th element.

Actually they are giving everyone in the entire series "like you and me personas". (With an upper IQ cap of 90.)

That leads me to believe the writers aren't as great as everyone at /mlp/ so desperately wants them to be.
They make every character plain and simple, but the placebo of wishful thinking prevents people to realize that.

Perhaps this change is to make it easier for 6-9 year olds to identify personas of friends with characters in the cartoon?

I think part of the problem may be as >>30144264 and >>30144323 have noted, and it's been noted in other threads. Continuity? What continuity? No one appears to be in charge. It's a free-for-all. There's no unifying vision, not for worldbuilding, not for character development, not for anything. This doesn't HAVE to result in crap, with writers who are good enough, or crazy enough. Lots of people mock Silver Age comics but the Silver Age produced comics that were actually comical in the original sense of the word. Silver Age superhero comics were absolutely surreal, batshit insane in the best senses of the words. This is not to say that the Silver Age didn't produce a lot of witless formulaic trash, too, but now and then they hit it out of the park with something that was entertaining by sheer novelty and insanity.

I'm still waiting for that with this show. We've got these wonderful characters and all these hints at how wonderful it could be, and we've got writers who don't appear to have so much as watched an episode of the show. We don't see "character development" so much as "character brownian motion."

The most painful thing to me is that they have writers who are clearly able to write decently - in the sense of getting dialogue and emotional moments down - but aren't being pushed to go the rest of the way to making a truly impressive product; hell, in many cases it seems like they're being pushed to put continuity of character and lore last behind gags and emotional "got your feels!" moments. I think about how Larson talked about the writing situation being a "hundred cooks in the kitchen" situation now and everything needing to be cleared with a dozen people before it can go for writing - really, I get the sense that's why the characters are often so cyclical: That this is how they were is the only thing everyone can agree on, so it's what we get.

I write romantic clop, I get a few "meh" responses. I try to write a scene getting into the mental space of someone who is, like us, creepily obsessed with a beautiful, untouchable goddess he can never be with. I get crickets chirping in response. Even slapstick humor vanishes without a ripple, and I thought this general loved the silly stuff.

Everybody that's saying there's no greentext here, no one's telling stories--open up Notepad and write the story you want to see. It doesn't matter if it's creepy or cringy or stupid. No one's going to come to your house and give you a swirly for it. The cops aren't going to arrest you for it. JUST DO IT.
