I've been wondering about this.
So like, they absorbed the Elements of Harmony and can call upon them anytime now, right? It's an inherent ability, like going super saiyan? Hence why there hasn't been a standard Big Evil since Tirek; they can handle that shit now. The last few crises have been things you can't just rainbow-zap away, like time paradoxes, natural disasters & getting blackjacked.

I hope for them to deviate a bit, no constrains means new opportunities. I'll take non-canon movie if it's good.
But we both know that 90% of it will be showcasing new characters that will all conveniently disappear by the end of the movie to not upset the status quo and 10% of it will be some plot asspull that doesn't have anything to do with anything previously established (even something like rainbow power).

I don't know. Rainbow Power was inside the Box. The Box was connected to the Tree. The Tree is connected the the Elements of Harmony.
Once the Box was opened, Rainbow Power happened, from a Tree connected to the Elements. Would that not suggest that the power was inside the Box and given to them, as sort of an evolution of the Elements? Why would it be a 1 time use, unless the Tree is sentient and knew Tirek was about?

They struggled with the Bug Bear. There's no logical excuse for them not using their powers to handle it.
They could have used it to stop Discord and Smooze during the gala. They were ready to fight before they got gooped.
Rainbow nor Pinkie used it when their lives were in danger on that cliff in Griffonstone.
Rainbow would have used it if she could when she thought the whole town turned into zombies.

No, It was a one time event because the show needed them to gain harmony superpowers to defeat a character that controlled all the magic in Equestria.

I didn't mind it plot-wise because they built up the box and keys all season, but god damn I hated those designs. Why weren't they more subtle? Why couldn't you just give their manes the Celestia/Luna ethereal look? It would have been way better looking and they still could have sold the separate toys.

Best bet IMO: they pull some Marvel Event Comic shit where a crisis befalls Equestria during the M6's/Princess' absence and Starlight has to deal with it. Basically this, featuring GlimGlam as Cage and, I dunno, Chryssi or Shaodwlock or Grogar as Thanos.

They change owners. I mean, we can't really know exactly how it happened, but I believe we know that celestia can use them, alone, right? She showed it or said it once, didn't she?
So why didn't she simply kept them to defeat Nightmare Moon when she would come back?
Maybe the elements 'served their purposes' after tirek and could be searching for new owners/awaiting a new threat.

Why not use the movie to redefine the direction of the show or give it a new start. They could literally change the shows general direction, make a spin off, or even split the show into 2 on a whim. That's the beauty of a movie, it gives you the ability to begin and end a story or its essence on a whim.

The Main 6 haven't because the Tree Castle is literally formed from the Tree of Harmony and the Map seems fuelled on their magic. Their Cutie Marks are called to different places, after they places the Elements they represent into the Tree of Harmony
