It's alright, I've always preferred Metal where the vocals take a backseat to the instrumentation and while good this song does not match that criteia. Just preference though.

Semi related: Generally the progression in Viking and Black Metal has to be particularly novel for me to like it. Frequently disappointed by the genre (not to say what you posted is anything but loosely similar to it)

Yeah, I can understand wanting to get the best of a genre. There are a few unique bands though in that department. If anything the classics are always there to listen to. Black Metal? You got Burzum, Venom, Mayhem, and Immortal. Amon Amarth is cream of the crop Viking Metal. Strong band all around, I think.

Hell yeah, at times the band is more Melodic Death than Viking which contributes alot to why I like them so much; Melodic Death and esoteric Trash (as opposed to the big 4) are the genres in Metal that generally deliver for me.

Punk is a deceptively diverse thing but I am not quite learned in the genre. Got good punk songs (some with metal influences) I like but I wouldn't be able to share my thoughts on it and sound like I know what I'm talking about.

Well, I'd say CKY is a great starting point. Suicidal Tendencies is pretty great. Gnar Kill is in the same kinda pack of bands as well, so there's a few bands to start rolling with.
