More specifically that's the hubble extreme deep field image, which was gathered from the center of the original hubble deep field image.
The faintest dots are about 10-billionth the amount of light you can see with the naked eye, the oldest galaxies are from over 13 billion years ago and the red dots are the remains of galaxy sized collisions.
We're probably going to be a red dot on something else's picture once the milky way and andromeda drift into each other in around four billion years.
Space is fucking awesome.
