What is it about the show that made you like it and continue

Those are three different questions, so I'll answer them one by one.
I liked it because it was sweet, funny, cute, and just made me feel good.
I continued watching it because I fell in love with the fandom. Fanfics, music, fanimations--I remember being really into the Doctor Whooves subfandom. Even as deep as I am now, I miss that innocent honeymoon phase, when you find so much amazing stuff in so short a time.
I only fell in love with my waifu in 2015, and I've been here since 2012. Even though we've only been together for about 2 years, she means the world to me.

It was funny and cute, and did some interesting things with stock cartoon plots (Party of One is a prime example). I especially loved the bits of satire and the characters.

Looking back, I don't think the premiere is all that amazing. But what it implied, what it set up, was fan fucking tastic. This series' lore is amazing. I love fictional lore, and My Little Pony has all of it. Everything I ask for when looking through lore, it has it. Why do I enjoy hearing Equestrian history, but groan when I hear anything non-fiction Equestrian lore is a rollercoaster of highs with a few low points, and a few twists to keep it interesting. Human history is just depressing.

There's also the line; "Legend has it that on the longest day of the thousandth year, the stars will aid in her escape, and she will bring about nighttime eternal". I fucking love that line.

Not me. No form of autism (apart from mild tourette, if you count that), never bullied (was actually pretty liked in school), and so far, a pretty good life. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's one long continuous surprise.
I booted up the first episode expecting puerile cringey horseshit about tea parties & crayon collecting and get dumped right into ONE THOUSAND YEARS AGO THE SUN AND MOON WENT TO WAR
When that was over I expected these two purple fuckers to talk in one-syllable words with sugary condescending tones and instead the dialogue was charming and the voices were pleasant.
When they get to the town unironically called Ponyvile I get the very dresses & cakes & rainbows I'd been dreading in wholly novel respectable ways that didn't insult my intelligence.
When the pink one started talking in tune to spontaneous music and I felt just about ready to kill myself the horses standing right next to her ON FUCKING SCREEN cringed on my behalf. Even for ponies, this behavior was still considered cliched & unorthodox.
I used to say I was in it for "the lore" or "the continuity" or "the fantasy elements" but I always get (rightly) told that others cartoons do it better. It's the fact that there is ANY lore/continuity/fantasy elements in some shitty lil' girls show, done as competently as it is. I didn't love the NMM skit because it was the best mythology I'd ever seen, I loved it because mythology was something I didn't expect to even see.
And it never let up. The wedding, changelings, Crystal Empire, Discord's reform, Twilicorn, the Tirek fight, Moondancer, a new MC, Flurry, they keep on throwing curveballs just when I think I know what's going on. This show keeps eating up soulless corporate mandates to shill toddler toys and making compelling characters & interesting settings out of them. All of which are constantly evolving & changing & developing so that stagnation never sets in like it does every long-running cartoon under the sun.

It's kind of like a roller coaster, I guess. Or a ghost train. Or a dirt-bike safari. I dunno. Some sort of ride.

I thought the prophecy was supposed to be ironic. It came true: "the stars" freed Luna, because they were Twilight & her friends (as repp'd by her cutie mark).
...What was the Nighttime Eternal, then?

At first it was just the "cute and cheery world" factor, but within a couple of episodes I was starting to love the implications of the world as well: The way little things hinted at a so much bigger and deeper world than what we'd even seen so far. The fact that Ponyville was built on the edge of a mysterious and dark forest, that there were a pair of quasi-diety-esque figures that ran the sun and moon, all the monsters and other races and shit...

I fell in love not just with the characters, but with the idea of the characters in a world that was so different from our own: A wide-open fantasy setting to explore. The way the earliest episodes had everything set up to be more horse-ey definitely helped, as it reinforced the idea the world was just... different.

I think it was, in typical fantasy-prophecy fashion, deliberately ambiguous. It could mean Nightmare bringing about an apocalyptic unending night, or it could mean Twilight freeing Luna from Nightmare's grip.

In 2011 I was looking for a "different" slice of life show, and with all the adventure, worldbuilding and interesting characters this show did nicely. It had more than just cute ponies doing cute things and the fandom was pretty active and I became active with it as well. I felt right at home so I stayed.
And that was even before I fell in love with one of the characters, something I never thought would happen again after such a long time so now no matter what I'm gonna stay for my waifu, even if nothing else in the show will interest me (which I doubt will happen, I'm still pretty optimistic).
Don't never cared about the porn, for several years I ignored it, gave up not long ago but already forgotten about it, it's not enough for me already.

Ah, hm.

You're right, that part of the prophecy isn't really interpretable in more ways than the one. I mean, you could really stretch and argue that Luna represents peaceful, restful Nighttime, while Nightmare represents something worse - an icy death for most of Equestria - and Luna was brought back never to turn to Nightmare again, but that's really reaching.

The music kept me in. Ingram is a god, he's disney level. I can't wait for him to work on a movie.

A late comer here. I've been on the ride a little over 3 years. I've thought about it for a while, what makes this show so special, and I've come to a simple conclusion.

It's love.

The animators, audio staff, voice actors, some writers, they all love this show. And that love is projected from each episode to me, even ones I don't like.

I in turn feel loved, and it fills me with happiness. With joy that my life is largely deprived of. So I keep coming back, ignoring the haters and nitpickers, and just enjoy the love.

Yes. You're right, you can feel how much some of the staff /loves/ the show, or even the fandom for some of them even after all these years full of autism and dramas.

It's kind of sad that it's, in the end, a simple money grab from hasbro, I can't even imagine how great it could've been if it had been more independant.
