I would argue that overall direction is piss poor now but episodes themselves have always been a bit of a mix-bag. Season 6 with all its faults actually had some really great episodes and Season 7 looks like it will be the more of the same.

As much as I still hate the current direction with leads like Twilight and Glimmer, I can't find myself hating the show over them since the show frequently steers away from them.

I'm pretty sure I am not alone when I say I prefer the mid-season over the openers and finale now.

Former rabid fan here, I've loved every second of the first 5 seasons of the show. But I legitimately hated about half a dozen of season 6 episodes. And by hate I'm not exaggerating in the slightest, it's not merely a simple "wow, that was really bad", it was "I really don't know why they did this episode, but I'd be happy to break the writer's legs". Because of episodes like those, watching the show became a chore, and when the season finally ended I was happy to be on a hiatus.

That being said, maybe it's just that I had no expectations left at all, but I'm enjoying season 7 so far, much more than season 6. Dash's parents episode was really great, and I even loved the Fluttershy episode that everyone else likes to hate. I'll be happy if they manage to keep it up, and I'll do my best to forget season 6 if they don't give me more reasons to hate the show again.

No, it's pretty genuine. I fucking LOVED this show in S1 and S2. Every time I would get drunk, I would tell my friends "Guys, you GOT to watch this." They just didn't get it. S3 was pretty good despite being short, and I was actually okay-ish with Twilicorn, although it was technically the first clang of the death knell. S4 was good, if not as good as S1 and S2. S5 was.... well, there were a couple of episodes that I skipped. S6 I skipped almost entirely, except the season premier and finale. S7 I skipped altogether and don't see myself watching.

And I am not quite sure what it is. I don't really want to waste the time to analyze it, but there's something missing. I still like the core idea behind the show, but there was something in S1-S4 that the current seasons no longer have. I am not sure what it is.

The show isn't what it used to be. That's not to say it's better or worse. But seasons 1 and 2 were a different show altogether. A different pace, a different charm.

Started to doubt after the S5 finale didn't follow my specific expectations but once I got what they were going for I was strapped back in tight as ever.
I don't think I've ever thoroughly enjoyed a run of episodes more consistently than I have all of S7 so far. Maybe it's because my brother hopped back on The Ride & we banter, but every episode's felt important in its own right. Even the SoL stuff's added significantly to the status quo. Every new development's exciting. I've posted more on /mlp/ in the past 3 weeks than the past 3 years and gotten some genuinely worthwhile discussion out of it. Lore talk, idea spitballing, feels dumps, as of right now I hope it all goes on ad infinitum.
