AAA titles are funny in a way that they are just marketing to people who are already sold on the game. Those people were never going to buy TFH, especially people after Tekken 7 and Injustice 2. Guilty Gear is probably the closest competition to TFH in terms of gameplay but even when comparing those two you can see they are vastly different games.

I believe TFH's biggest problem isn't who it has to complete with but that its niche might be TOO niche.

Fighting channels pick up niche games from time to time - Fighting is Magic wasn't an exception. However, if it's to be released in the same timeframe as big fighting game projects, it'll go completely under the radar.

True, they were unable to release early and now they either have to wait a long while - which won't make the backers happy - or release when a lot of those new AAA fighting games are released as well. I don't know which is worse.

Why is this a concern? Mane6 got all the money they needed and then some. Even if they don't sell a single copy, as long as the game itself is not arse and they do nothing to ruin their reputation somehow, they've won.

Did people really have that high hopes for this game? I always expected it to be a small game with a small cult following. Why would people anticipate it competing with mainstream fighting games? It's a basic 2d fighter with 6 characters and it's core audience is furries and "bronies".

You are wrong here. Fighting is Magic had appeared on big fighting sites like Shoryuken and Eventhubs. Some of the big fighting game channels picked it up for a vid or two. Even Maximilian streamed it on his Twitch at least once.

The fighting game community will pick up literally any doujin fighting that's half decent and has at least some publicity. TFH, at least from the first glance, is quite a bit above being just "half-decent", so given proper publicity it has all the chances of grabbing the attention of the wide audience even if briefly.
The more people will give the game a chance the higher is the probability of it ultimately having a passable online community size.
