Celestia has Equestria, but as we see over time she's grown distant from her subjects, and in the S7 premier it's revealed she's afraid of losing even Twilight.
Luna has nothing. Everything she knew died 1000 years ago, and Celestia gave her a fresh start by purging her from the history books. Luna wants to be good, and she's searching for that sense of stability. Silent atonement and penance through suffering is the only thing she knows of that can keep herself in check while she's desperately looking for some stable constant to anchor her sanity to.

Do they still read Fraser in comparative mythology classes?

This is what I see when I try to look at Equestria from a perspective of myths and folklore.

Sunbutt, being not only a sun goddess but also symbolically everypone's magical mommy, would be the one I'd expect, if I were reading the Equestrian version of The Golden Bough, to be the one venerated at fertility and harvest festivals: the divine living life-giving Sun, who brings warmth, summer, the harvest, and life. She is yang: action, motion, warmth, light, life, creation, fertility, the sun, the sky, hot dry wind, order.

Whereas Luna is the bringer of night, darkness, winter, and death. She might even be a psychopomp; the pones still offer sacrifices to her "Nightmare Moon" aspect after the harvest, when the life-giving crops have died for another year and the cold winds blow. Notice how much skull/skeleton imagery there is associated with Nightmare Night. It's clearly the pone version of Dia de los Muertos. Luna is her shadow and her dark mirror reflection, her opposite, which is yin: passivity, stillness, cold, darkness, death, destruction, night, the valley, the cavern, cold rain, entropy

So I'd expect--from a comparative mythology perspective--Sunbutt to be the intended recipient of sacrifices, possibly ponies pone--at the spring and autumn solstice. Moonbutt is the goddess of death, or rather her Nightmare Moon aspect is. It's also possible that a death-cult may have grown up around her in centuries past, one that, like the Thuggee cult of Kali, sacrificed sentients to her. One doesn't imagine she took that very well or let it go on very long, though.

In the show opening credits there's even Sunbutt and Moonbutt bending themselves into a yang-yin symbol. Even their colors, white and black, or almost-black, fit the schema. Hypothesis: Lauren Faust intended the audience to notice this and make the connection. See picture.

So, today while I was taking a huge dump at the college I thought about Luna, and how she would smell, because that's better than focusing on the smell of my shit. I thought to myself "Smelling like any blue flower is too cliche, what else could she smell like?"
And then it hit me. She spent 1000 years on the moon. Now, due to lack of atmosphere on the moon, there are no winds. But there are rocks, and dust specifically. Without winds or water, erosion doesn't occur. Moon is covered in microscopic dust particles that are very, very sharp. Like asbestos. Now, I imagine that after spending 1000 years on the moon without any shelter, that dust must have covered every inch of her body, stuck in between her coat's hair.
But what I've been trying to say is, she probably smells like mix of iron and glass, as those are the main components of moon dust. Also, after 1000 years of breathing in microscopic razors, her lungs much be full of scar tissue. They're probably full of moon dust, and she suffers from pulmonary fibrosis. I imagine even going up the stairs might exhaust her. I doubt she's a very active pony for that reason. She also dry coughs a lot.

Context isn't even relevant here. This monster wearing Celestia's skin IS completely heartless. Publicly signing up and demeaning your own sister is bad enough, but doing it WHILE SHE'S IN A NIGHTMARE MOON FACE IN THE BOARD is the icing on the cake, that's beyond cruel. The show even makes a point of it that she's forgiven for that, by everyone except maybe herself.

It's the last Friends forever comic they did.
Celly and Luna go a week straight with no sleep to finish all their work so they can go and compete at the Sisterhooves Social. They get more and more competitive with each other as time goes by (Apparently spicy food causes it? I don't know, they bring that up for two panels and then immediately drop it),as they're both trying to help each other finish the other's duties. At one point, they get into a fight over which is the best pet, the immortal phoenix, or the generic opossum.
As revenge for the pie thing, Luna ends up having Celestia magically hypnotized to think she's a chicken every time someone says the word "go," which results in them losing almost all the events
Despite that...I don't know. Throughout the whole issue, I didn't feel like Luna gave nearly as much as she got. Usually Celly would mess with her, and she'd fire back some insult or another. The moon rock thing is the only time she just gets all quiet. It's obviously still a huge issue for her, and they never address it.
