She is a mailmare so she must be able to go huge distances. Maybe that is why she got worse. Her speed was not the best but she had good stamina for her age. As the kids grew up and got better stamina those who could sprint faster started to win because they were all able to sprint the whole course instead of only derpy doing it.

The comic looks well drawn but the comic lore isn't important as the show it's based on. Unless that autist wants to sit there and tell me how the mario and luigi ponies are relevant to the elements of harmony comic#XX outside of being a videogame parody. I don't really follow them but he probably should of worked it out from the first two comic arcs that not everything would be clear between Hasbro and IDW.

Here I could make the argument that Derpy does many Deliveries so she has the experience to overcome such harsh weather conditions while the others train in cloudsdale or wherever they have better control over the local weather.
