Well, outliving everyone seems like it would either result in a total breakdown or a cavalier acceptance. Seems like she's just gotten used to it, though there's probably a lot of sad memories bottled up inside. There could be a lot of good stories out of that, though no way the show would ever bring up something that dark, regardless of writer.

Actually a good question. Oil normally helps birds not just in the water, but also when passing through vapor in the sky (i.e., clouds).

But pegasi (and alicorns) can touch clouds anyway because magic, which implies water doesn't condense on them anyway. So strictly speaking oil may not be necessary.

I still assume they do, even if just to keep their feathers clean and clear of other debris.

I adore Season 1 Twilight Snarkle, who is basically Daria Morgendorfer with hooves. She has absolutely no social skills and she doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks. She's very direct and forthright and a little bit cynical and she plays the straight-man for the goofy antics of her friends. She's also pretty damn funny and she's absolutely savage. She'd never do something as batshit insane as cast a hideous mind-rape spell on a doll and throw it into a crowd in order to create a problem to write a letter about, would she? Oh, wait.

I love S1 Twilight Snarkle. The twitchy OCD/Borderline Personality Disorder "Twilight Snapple" who came later would terrify me just by existing if she were real. S1 Twilight Snarkle is an excellent choice for Celestia to choose as her Padawan and possible eventual replacement. Twilight Snapple? er, no.

I thought of Equestria as being more Greek-inspired, at least Season 1. Pegasi were creatures of Greek myth.

Of course, Equestria is a mishmash, with thatched-roof cottages that would not have looked out of place in Germany in the 17th Century, gravity-and-physics-defying castles sticking out of the side of gravity-and-physics-defying mountains, farming towns straight out of the midwestern US in the early 20th Century, cities of glass and steel skyscrapers that look like they could have been found in the US or Europe, and so on.

I must admit I don't know whether Greeks of the Classical era knew any intoxicants other than alcohol, in wine, but the ponies do have contact with other intelligent species and other cultures. I recently wrote a short greentext trollfic in which Celestia's living-goddess metabolism makes such short work of alcohol that after a trying day of dealing with cranky nobles Celestia seeks out other means of chemically-assisted relaxation resulting in an elaborate prank and trolling Luna into an attempted behind-the-scenes coup. I can't remember where I posted it, though.
