Did they cut out content from the movie that would have developed them more? Sunny Flair has literally no personality whatsoever. No quirks or anything(no, being a bitch doesn't count, every CP student acted like that). Lemon Zest with her one line is a more complex character.

She looks like she is possibly related to Cinch, but they barely interact so nothing was explored.

The others were given just the slightest hint of character to make me want to learn more about that, only to not deliver, leaving nothing but disappointment.

Except Sugar Coat, she was pretty great.

I liked that she was kind of Scitwi's friend but not really.

If you think about it most of Sugarcoat's lines were almost giving her a pep talk in her own, mostly infective way.

They were an example of an orphaned plot. The original intent of the shadowbolts and the movie was to have a "nega-mane six", with each of the shadowbolts paralelling the Mane six but lacking their EOH-- Sunny flair was Rarity with her love of fashion, but no care for others. Lemon zest was a party girl, but with no interest in connecting with others like pinkie. Sugar coat was Honest but uncaring about the feelings of others, unlike AJ. Indigo zap was all about winning and being fired up, but no real team loyalty, compared to RD. Sugar coat seemed nice, like fluttershy, but was actually a bitch. And twilight and Sunset were foils.


But that angle got cut due to them wanting to focus on the Midnight sparkle/Sunset dynamic plot, so they pretty much are just... THERE. it was most probably too late to erase them, since hasbro mandated their toys, but they served no function.


Its kind of sad, as a Nega-mane six route is a plot I'd like to see, but of course the other 5 can't have any real importance in a plot, that's time for twilight.

Movie 2 and 4 work fine in a that format, but 1 and 3 feel rushed and bare bones.

I'm actually glad they didn't do the nega-group thing with the shadowbolts.

A plot like that needs more effort put into it, not just a toy mandate from Hasbro. We should get a plot like that later I hope, but with more effort and thought put in-- Like Lightning dust for Dash for example, or Suri for Rarity. And someone besides Sour sweet for fluttershy, she was just a bitch.
