There are THREE things to discuss here:

1. Shipping as general
2. Shipping in MLP
2. Spike's shippings.

Now let us go with first one:
- Shipping at general is widely considered as cancer. If you had the chance to see numerous threads on /co/, you will know it.
- Not sure about this one, but this applies to /tv/ too?
- There are notable exceptions from this rule, e.g. Kim Possible, where Ron and Kim became simply a "Battle Couple".

Secondly:
- This is a show aimed "originally and still" to little girls
- Therefore topics about romance and couples is somewhat out of question here.
- Such characters as Cranky/Matilda, Shining/Cadance are supportive casts, since you don't focus on them on show and they are considered as adults. You do not follow the whole more or less raunchy drama with them. It is already established, just like little girls' parents.
- The M6 + 2 + CMC are characters which are focused in show, that implies you cannot make shipping story about them.
- If they would make "10-20 years later", the show can portray with some OC/BG ponies as they husband / fiance / "anthony burch".

And for last:
Spike is difficult, because:
- he is a kid (according to Meghan's lies; for some reason Larson didn't mind it, but he is history), thus a age difference, implied pedo, etc.
- [debatable] interspecies

I agree he's in this weird place though, where he's not quite as old as the mane 6 (on average), but he's older (both physically and mentally) than the CMC.

If Spike was never in the show, k may not have ever gotten into it.
I relate with him quite a bit in almost everything he does.
Even the relationship he has with his "Family" is mirroring mine.
He's one of the least cringy characters and I'm excited to see how he grows in season 7. Season 6 was good to him so I hope it's the same this time around.

The headcanon doesn't matter. Do you really believe a Galapagos tortoise that can live pass 200 takes 30-40 years to grow up? Add that Spike is more reptile than mammal which has faster growth rate. Plus the canon in this world of dragons growing size but not maturity by greed and the answer's all too clear.
