Because it's silly. You're comparing a slice of life show that's made for family's to be able to enjoy together to a hard crime show about drugs and shit that's designed to carry a thread over multiple seasons to a singular end.

Mostly because there are a number of different people working on the show and their primary objective isn't to make some big epic world for the characters to exist in.

The writers all try their best to just take the characters as they are and show how they interact in their day to day lives, with maybe some small little additions to the character's overarching canonical structure with each iteration. Though that's mostly incidental. Not only that but there are dozens of different people all working on this show at the same time, and even though they want the same basic thing they have different ideas on how to achieve those goals. So they meander and ramble a lot.

That isn't a bad thing.

Though people insist on comparing it to a show like Game Of Thrones that's all written by one guy with a strict vision of how the universe works and a concrete idea on where it's headed.

Hell, Martian even fucking said it himself. He's got the end of the series written and he's just going to keep on putting flesh on the story until he dies, at which point he put it in his will to have the end published.

In that regard, while Game Of Thrones is ever expanding, it's got a set final destination. Meanwhile MLP is a living breathing thing that is also growing, but at a more relaxed pace and with no clear destination in mind.

Honestly, I'm kind of rambling here. My point should be that you shouldn't expect this show to be like that show because they are different shows made by different people for different reasons in different ways. Expecting them to be even remotely comparable is silly and I would think that fact should be common sense, but apparently it isn't.
