So was the giraffe intelligent or not?
I'm thinking that it's not. Sure, it has intelligent pony eyes, but it never shows any other signs of being sapient. I think someone on the art team just realized that giraffes needed that certain art-style, while the writer didn't.

Technically there's precedence that some parts of a species are intelligent species and some aren't. Although it is quite a stretch, Diamond Dogs are, as the name implies, dogs. Winona is a dog too. Like I said, it's a stretch, but maybe a small sparkle of hope that there are still intelligent giraffes out there. And they're probably just as cute.

Actually was pretty cute.

As for whether or not she's intelligent, I think it's safe to say yes. Equestria has this weird thing going on where all the hooved animals seem to be smart, even though they aren't necessarily treated that way. We've seen cows and sheeps talk, even though they are treated like animals, corralled and cooped up in pens. Even goats have some smarts. I don't think they ever talked, but they collaberated with Iron Will. And this episode had a goat at the vet too, even though we know they have some brains.

I'm sure Beanpole is smart. She's just treated like all the other non-equine subponies out there.
