Ponk was too overbearing, but I enjoyed the ep and that's what's important. Sure poochie was the focus again, but I have accepted that at this point like I accepted twilight's wings, the box, and the baby.
Doesn't mean the show has become shit YET though. Holy shit is came close a few times, but even season 1-2 had their moments like the fucking owl we haven't seen in awhile. If they toned down pinkie and maybe switched out for/or combined trixy this might have been 10/10. Was really good though.

A well written 'annoying' character should be obnoxious to the characters in the show and only mildly annoying to the audience.
Think about every decent show that had a baby in it. The baby is annoying, not funny, usually a drain on the characters, etc. The characters in the show should be the ones experiencing this, not the audience. How is it valid criticism?
Character positions in series have changed multiple times over the past. A main character for a show doesn't have to remain the protagonist for the entirety of the story - besides, each season is its own self-contained entity, and as such each season ends up being different in nature and character showing.
I mean, sure, Starlight Glimmer has a shitty backstory, but it's one that could potentially happen in the universe of MLP:FiM. After all, this is the same universe where Cheese Sandwich, another embodiment of zane alongside Pinkie Pie, exists. He got his inspiration and cutie mark from Pinkie Pie, too, and has a Cheesy sense just like Pinkie has a Pinkie sense. So are you saying I should immediately burn Cheese Sandwich at the stake?
At this, you might be thinking 'This faggot just hates Purple Smart and is a Hascuck Shill', but that's not true. I like Twalot Sporkle. But the honest truth is, a lot of her has already been explored. And also, it's a TV show. TV shows don't have ratios of Protagonist to Episode where they are main characters. There are a lot of TV shows where the side characters are the main characters of particular episodes; however, mostly these are side-shows.

There are tons of explanations the show hasn't explained that showed up way early on and exist solely for plot purposes, like Froggy Bottom Bog and Ghastly Gorge. That's a really nitpicky thing to whine about, especially since they took the time out early on to explain that Ponyville has gem caves underneath it. Hell the caves themselves already appeared in Gauntlet of Fire. It's not a stretch to say there are other caverns just outside the town.

It's not really OOC because they've never really settled on one character, but the show has never been good at deciding what volume Pinkie operates at. There's a "good" Pinkie that is odd but strives to understand and appeal to the feelings of Ponies around her, and there's "autist" Pinkie who is a perpetual megaphone with no regard. The former is great and the later is brutal.
Today was the later on blast as the central antagonist.
"Griffon the Brush Off" is a great cite because it's a similar conflict, only presented with Pinkie as good and Gilda as an awful bitch.

The idea of having Pinkie try her best to keep Maud in Ponyville but overdo it is nice, I also liked having her bond with Starlight, they do have a connection on the "many ponies avoid me" level even though it's Starlight's own fault. Starlight liking kites after being shown to have kites in her room in earlier episodes was a great touch, as well as other callbacks. Starlight and Maud appreciating each other but being annoyed by Pinkie was well done on their part and I liked that. Maud then moving to the Ghastly Gorge to force the friendship lesson worked fine, and having Starlight try but fail to tell her nicely was pretty funny. I liked most of the jokes.
However overall Pinkie was written too loud and obnoxious, which is a shame because considering Maud's character, even a normally active Pinkie trying to watch her every step would have been sufficient. It's also a double shame because Confalone wrote her better in his other episodes (even Party Pooped where I consider the characterisation of Pinkie to be the saving grace of the episode). This episode shows that while Nick can write good pony episodes, his preferred writing style is still a bit too much for the show. As always, his tendency to meme and have random things happen a bit too heavily for FiM shone through, but this time the characterisation for Pinkie also wasn't as on point as in prior episodes, meaning that the episode sadly doesn't hold up quite as well as his others (Party Pooped excluded). I still liked it overall, it was pretty nice. Good, but not great, which is why I give it a 7 (8 for the idea, plot, and overall characterisation, minus 0.5-1 for Pinkie and lolsorandom humor).

I've liked all of S7 so far. The first episode was probably the worst, and I think this one may be the best so far. It had plenty of good callbacks, jokes, visual gags, and cutes. Glimmer finally got to be in an ep without being its focus, Maud got a little more depth, and we got world progression by Maud moving to new scene in Ponyville. Pinkie was more annoying than usual, almost too much for me, but not enough to hurt the ep significantly for me. Maybe would've been better if Maud and Starlight's constant sarcasm had just misled Pinkie to thinking they weren't bonding instead of Pinkie just trying to force it without even trying to read the air. I really enjoyed when it came time for the lesson, and Starlight compleetly botched trying to deliver it, good keks. Maud/Glim backstory was a welcome surprise, but the gag of it being so brief fell flat and made it feel awkward for me. Since Glim already had her equal sign, I assume she was just starting the town, and wa sjust getting to the point where she'd captued so many cutie marks that she was having trouble managing, and needed a more long term and less volatile storage solution. Also, really loved the callback to the kites in Glimmers room from ELTSD.

Boy was this a good episode of the starlight glimmer show. I gotta say I was worried for the first few seconds that we were gonna get through an episode without getting our daily dose of everyone's favorite mary sue, but sure enough five minutes in they bring her back into the mix, what a pleasant surprise. I'm really happy with this new direction story-wise, who gives a shit about those other ponies? Fuck them! We want starlight? Mane six? More like MAIN SUX! Amirite? It's just so refreshing that with the series winding down, uncertainty on the future after the movie, and the possibility of these being among the last episodes of this series we all love so much, that right off the bat we get four episodes in a row centered around a pony that only true connoisseurs of the series can really appreciate.
Sarcasm aside objectively I'd give this episode 8/10, it had some funny bits to it, some cuteness, and nothing overtly cringey about it. All in all a quality episode.
But in the context of the season so far as a whole it gets a 5/10 maybe even a 4/10. Every time she's come on screen I just hope to the bottom of my heart that this'll finally be the day she gets sent away. Just fuck off to ghastly gulch, or wherever, and not come back for at least four episodes. Maybe give us a chance to develop a character who hasn't been plagued by a garbage backstory and forced as hell reformed-criminal-mastermind angle. If this is how its going to be from now on then the series potentially ending after the movie might be a good thing. Just let it die and start from scratch.

Going back and watching the season 1 episodes (Griffon the Brush Off, Feeling Pinkie Keen, Party of One) I can see that even then Pinkie was usually yelling, often in other ponies' personal space, and sometimes causing actual onscreen cringe.
There are a couple of episodes (Feeling Pinkie Keen, Too Many Pinkie Pies, today's episode) which are centered around the idea that Pinkie is annoying.
I want to like Pinkie and she has her moments but they make it pretty hard.

Usually im called a hasdrone since i almost always love it, but this one just felt weird. It got only about 3 smiles out of me the entire time. Which sucked because I was looking forward to a Maud episode.

Lots of little touches that made me rewind a few times, like that little bit of animation where Pinkie pushes Maud forward so she's walking with Starlight.
Maud and Glimglam have an interesting dynamic that showcases their unconventional friendship making skills; I like that Starlight hates being pressured into things, even if it's what she wants anyway.
Ponkorita was uncommonly violent in this ep, though.

My opinion, good episode, liked Starlight and Maud's friendship and Glimmy's obsession with kites was adorable.
But this episode was a slog to sit through with Pinkie not knowing when to shut the fuck up, the entire episode was almost unbearable with how much she kept talking in her irritating voice, yes she got told she needed to just shut up towards the end, but it took way too long for that.
So overall, 5/10 episode thanks to pinkie being so god damn irritating I wanted to break her fucking jaw, had she shut the hell up for more of the episode it would have been a very solid 8/10.

Discord/Maud was cool in Make new Friends but Keep Discord, same with Discord/Trixie in S6 finale. It shown two personalities collide against eachother. Even Tree Hugger is somehwat unique and interesting by being a hippie stereotype.
Starlights problem is that she's trying to be a normal pony personification of a average human teenager rather than some trope unique personality (like for example anime characters from series such as Danganronpa or Naruto) which would make sense if the cartoon wasn't too over the top. THe main focus is on comedy so characters like Starlight and Sunset Shimmer will never deliver a good line and they never did. They can only work as the centric characters acting as a straight man toward everythign that happens.
It work with EG and Sunset because she kind of replaces Twilight after second movie. But it doesn't work in FiM since Twilight character is still the main heroine, and replacing her with Starlight feel disjointed and forced. Like suddenly a secondary character was replacing Captain Kirk as main hero while Kirk was only cleaning the ship as janitor. Twilight need a proper episode that could retire her story arc before we focus on Starlight.

100% this. I didn't even mind Glimmer this episode, she was just kinda there. Maud being the mastermind behind Glimmer's plot was fun, they had the kite moment and Glimmer really felt like she understood Maud a little. Sure, Rarity or Trixie would work better, but she didn't subtract from the episode in my opinion.
However, Pinkie was exactly on Filli Vanilli levels of obnoxiousness. Every time the episode was going for some fun Pinkie had to barge in, kill the mood and be a screeching cunt. What could've been a strong 9/10 fun episode went down the toilet to "overall above average".

Overall, this episode is my favorite Season 7 episode so far. I liked how Maud and Starlight's friendship formed, and their first interaction in the flashback was pretty hilarious. I do understand the complaints concerning Pinkie, and I even thought to myself that she was going a bit overboard with how much she wanted Maud to stay in Ponyville. She should have toned her down a bit.
That said, however, I do like that it was coming from a place of love and genuine concern over whether Maud would be capable of making friends on her own, only to learn that she is, and that she underestimated her. I'm also really happy that Maud finally graduated.
It was a funny, cute episode that gave me some feels here and there. 9/10.

For me at least her character succeeded here in a way it hasn't before since she dropped villainy.
After her villainous crusade, she just doesn't have a big enough personality to compete with the other characters in the show. But here they narrowed the scope down to Maud's level, letting Glimmer breathe a little. It was an inspired choice.

It is I m p o s s I b l e to learn a lesson once and have it perfected from then onward. Life lessons like this take practice, you don't just have one time where someone tells you to stop and anyone can just stop.
Fluttershy still needs to work on being more assertive, its a basic part of her character that she's rather shy and conflict-averse.
Rainbow Dash still needs to work on being more humble and less of a cunt, its a basic part of her character that she is very brash and doesn't have much social tact.
Twilight still needs to work on not being completely neurotic when things go south, its a basic part of her character that she banics hard whenever her plans completely fold.
tl;dr MLP is simulating a feature of real life character development, and people are bitching about it. this makes me angry.

There is nothing surprising about this. The mane six failed because they were trying too hard to be Maud's friend rather than just letting friendship happen. Excellent lesson this episode. It makes up for A Friend In Deed because Pinkie method of being as pushy as possible was btfo.

Futurama ran for a total of 7 seasons and knew it was time to quit. That's not much longer. Both shows were fundamentally different than My Little Pony because there wasn't a lesson learning aspect. They were straight comedy and there was no expectation for much change and character development.
The Mane 6 are largely where they want to be and attempting to teach them more without the context of new ponies gets repetitive fast.

We saw Trixie do transmutation and transportation with a little advice from Starlight. I think magic is a lot more focused/technique based than raw power. Both Twilight and Starlight have natural talent, yes, but they also had much more powerful motivations to focus than other unicorns.
And Starlight didn't "clone herself" exactly. She was so fast that she created the illusion of being in two places at once.
