There is no unity without religion, in fact "religion" is "what binds together". One may argue what kind of religion is preferable to found a society upon, but getting rid of it altogether means that society will resort to surrogate forms of religion, namely totalitarianism, as testified by the events of the last century.
Equestria has had it good for over a millennium because they believe in the higher-order value of friendship, embodied in the person of Celestia (and Luna, before NMM).
