It is coincidence that the crystal ponies would return after such a long time, especially since they were forgotten through time by all but celestia and luna. Stayed a unicorn? Part of Faust's plan? Post proof of this. And the royal wedding season 2 finale was actually, unironically good. Season 3 premiere was ok, could have been fleshed out more. Everything else since then including cadance, shining, and flurry have been pretty good.

Not even by a long shot. The episode is a thematic and literary follow-up to the Canterlot Wedding, Cadance's design features involve gradient colors, which is a feature found exclusively in crystal ponies, and her weird, at the time very out-of-place cutie mark is the crystal heart, etc.

The fact she was introduced as the love interest to Shining and stayed pretty much like that characterization wise also?

Her entire premise is being a huge Stacy who's "job", if you can call it that, was to play cupid because she's "princess of love".
Not only that, but the fact she's canonically in a relationship and has a child means writefags can't insert their fantasies so there isn't much green of her, and when there is it involves some kind of cucking or NTR or gay shit or writing Shining off completely because these characters come in a set.
It's a shame really, it's a waste of a good design.
