Everything went quiet save for his chains clanking against the crystal ground and the sound of his wheels grinding as they rolled with rusted bolts and threatened to break beneath the massive weight that pressed down on his back. Nothing but those sounds.

He didn't know how many times it had come and gone since then. He'd stopped counting after a hundred or so. So many times he'd heard it, it had become etched in his mind.

Now that I have to completely and utterly disagree on, she's had so many issues with anyone she considered family and anyone she's seen as a maternal/paternal figure that someone coming along and implying she had family all along has far more likely a chance to end in utter bitterness and outright hostility that they chose now of all times to actually care, and even then only because they somehow had blood that connected them.

There is nothing in Sunset's history that would imply she would even talk to the guy, let alone give him a chance to have any part of her life, ESPECIALLY one where he tries to actually coach her or tell her what to do. First sign of "You should do____" and she'd open fire like Wile E Coyote on cocaine.

But why? She has no connection to him, she has no feelings for him, she only knows him in the way she was utterly abandoned by him and that he's nothing but a failure in every aspect she wants to be a success in. Either Orange Blossom remarried and the closest thing she'd consider her REAL father is dead, or OB died and she was adopted and the closest thing she'd consider a real father is dead, or she never had a father in her life and it would only embitter her to the idea one wants to claim to be so now, after all that she's been through.

This would only lead to dismissal and her making it clear she will never see him as anything other than "A guy I met in my twenties and one time I put in a hamster ball."

There's just nothing in any story imply him claiming to be her family would gain anything close to an even mildly accepting reaction, shit, she'd more likely sick Chitty on him just to see if she can punch smoke.

There was not a single track.

Not a broken leaf, not a single step in the mud, not a sign anything living had ever passed through this forest, nothing had come from the beach, nothing of note still lived in this tiny island.

The trees told a different story.

Every so often, there was a mark. Seeped between the bark, flowed into every crevice and stained brightly in the dark.

The mistake could not be washed away, no matter how strong the storm.

The path was erratic, obviously meant to throw her off, but the path was still clearly marked in all the dried and caked remains seeped deep inside of every raised edge of the tree's layers, blood that would have been impossible to wash away completely without ripping the bark itself in a more blatant and obvious tell.

Her prey was wounded, badly, unable to keep herself up for too many steps at a time.

Her weakness was the path she followed.

A crack of lightning illuminated between the thick brush above her, a single flash of light shining down to show a muddy and foul ground caked in water, completely absent of any sign of hoofprints. For anyone else, the path would have been impossible to follow.

She had not reached out again after her first attempt, her tracking based solely on her sight and her senses. It was all she needed, she was more sure of that every step further down the path she tread.

The blood on the next tree was not quite wet, but plain enough to see it wasn't nearly as caked over as the ones behind her.

Her head tilted up to the paths surrounding her, searching through the dense foliage for any glimmer of that blood or black chitin.

She found nothing, yet.

Finally, in that storm, her voice raised above a whisper.

Above, a crack of thunder came just after the trees lit up with a bright flash, showing her nothing but empty forest and a never ending downpour.

Nothing to see when more light beamed down and made shadows dance on the trees.

The rain showed itself, and nothing else.

Only when she stepped back, saw the wrapping around the other pony's hind leg, watched as the spikes and thorns along it's length buried their way into the skin and twisted in such a way to cling even tighter whenever she shifted at all, saw the snare close the gap and force her leg into the mud with a painful pull did she understand what was happening.

She only had a second to throw up a shield, yet it proved in vain. Nothing came afterwards, no attack, no followup, nothing.

The mare of this world wailed, thrashed in pain, struggled to pull loose the painful spikes and thorns that hooked into her skin, only to fail. No matter which way it was pulled or turned, another would dig in as one was relieved.

Light flashed before her eyes, power washed over her and nearly pushed her away, her hoof shielded her face from the force and the rain.

The screaming stopped.

The hoof that slipped past her defenses and slugged her good in the cheek answered that more than the huffing mare who had thrown it ever could.

"WHAT IN TARANTION WAS THAT!?"

She angrily hopped around on three legs, light emanating from her horn and seeping into the bloodied and torn limb without direct command from the pony who's sight only cared for the one in front of her.

For a long time following the question there was nothing. No sounds save the rain, the drops of lifeblood into the mud below, the hum of a horn desperate to fix it's owner. Few sounds, and no expressions save that of a single, confrontational glare.

For the entire time, she held, as pained and as angry as she was. Too stubborn to give up, too stubborn to look away, too stubborn even to speak again before the response came.

The other proved just as stubborn.

The outcome she had predicted had been blinding anger, hotheaded hate, another lashing at her and another opportunity to fight back without the hurt to her pride of attacking a wounded mare. She waited for it with coiled muscles and tense magic building just beneath her horn.

It never came.

What came instead was the one result she had hoped and prayed would not come.

A face that fell from anger into confusion, then shock, then utter disbelief.

Finally, most damning of all came last.

Gonna agree with the others, LOVED AUJ's bit there that showed her more judge dredd "This has to be done for the greater good" non-personal approach, the continuity with the tracker worked both as a plot element and a way to spark some tension between them, but I'm really unsure about AJ's sudden divination of AUJ hiding Chitania.

It's not an unfixable problem, though, so I'll see how it plays into the followup, but I'm just hoping you aren't rushing this because of certain comments.

Even in the darkness, even in the storm, the mare from another world felt that keeping track of a tree legged pony should have been an ease.

It wasn't the first time her truth had been shaken today.

She cursed beneath her breath when she saw the renewed vigor she pushed under each hoof, she glared with a renewed intensity at the smug smirk on the pony's face, she snarled when that smirk grew nearer.

The smirk lessened, ever inch nearer it grew.

Both mares knew the time for standing still had ended.

The look on the mirror mare's face was not the same as the other's, yet her heart beat just as quickly when the face beneath the wide rimmed hat suddenly collapsed.

All their magic, all their might, fizzled away beneath a shared beat of a single moment when it all fell apart.

"...You didn't mean her?"

The mare's lips flapped uselessly, words without form or meaning squeaking out as her body twitched and eyes danced all around. Between those broken words came breaths, heated and short, ones that made her weak as she stumbled back.

"And what?"

>Ah'... Ah' thought you meant...

Her teeth bit down on her lower lip, and her answer was sealed away.

It escaped from another part of her, when the first formation of hot tears began to grow.

No matter her stubbornness, no matter her pride, she still was the first to look away.
