Today there's probably no difference. At the start of the fandom the difference was pretty easy to explain. Those who discovered the show on 4chan had 4chan sensibilities. We were Anons who enjoyed the spectacle of trolling /b/ into two civil wars. As a group we weren't all that hugboxy, and those who were participated in the general. We tended to mock shit like cons, brony musicians and fandom celebrities. There was even a tendency to mock those who didn't hide their power level. We were as onsessed with the show as anyone, but a lot of us were /b/tards who got sucked onto the ride, so we were united in our new secret shame, and still able to laugh at ourselves for being grown men watching MLP. We thought of ourselves at 4chan's internet monsters, just with an added weakness for ponies instead of just cats.

The bronies were better represented by the posters at ponychan. These folks took love and tolerate as a credo, whereas to us it was a reverse troll. Bronies didn't hide their power levels, and we looked at them with the kind of morbid fascination fans of Disney animation have toward furfags. Bronies displayed a sincerity we scoffed at. They'd talk about lessons they learned from the show and how much being a brony improved their lives. How it allowed the autist to make friends or kept the total loser from committing suicide. Whereas we liked to point and laugh at autism, and were hoping some members of the fandom would actually kill themselves.

People use the show for escapism one way or another, it's inevitable. For someone who doesn't participate in "real life" a lot it can just replace it. Why even try when you can't live a life like in the show, you know. I can perfectly understand that. People who gave up on themselves long ago also give up on everything else. Historically we were different at one point. There were the bronies who saw the show inspiring them to be better people, vowed to love and tolerate and wanted to get together with others to sing Winter Wrap Up. That was no us. I wouldn't put it quite that way. Back in the day 4chan was the place people came to in order to be the monsters online that they couldn't be in real life. A lot of us were folks who led somewhat normal lives but enjoyed a kind of edginess that we had no other outlet for. When a bunch of those folks suddenly found pone it was just another in a long list of interests we indulged online because there was no practical way to let it intersect with the lives we were leading. It wasn't a matter of shame, but rather understanding that some things were best kept in the virtual world.

Social media has worked very hard to erase this distinction, which really is a founding principle of an anonymous imageboard. But those of us comfortable with this kind of culture still resist. Not out of shame but out of the desire to still have a place where we can be anonymous and enjoy things that might not be compatible with the lives we live in the real world.
