They don't have real sun, if it was star similar to ours NMM or Discord messing with it would destroy whole world, either no one controls it or it's some kind of magical construct created by past civilization.

Equestria is in peace for so long because it produces so much food that ponies are practically feeding all other countries, so no one wants to attack them and destroy their agriculture.

Luna was really young when she became NMM, maybe in her early 20s or few years older.
