That was the writers decision, not Hasbro meddling, like it was with Scilight. Elevating Sunset to protagonist status was risky but was very successful, so much that she's what make the movies watchable, without her they fall flat. The success encouraged the writers to do the same in the show, and that's how Starlight was born, but they forgot to make her interesting and likeable, so it was a disaster.
