So level with me /mlp/: what do want from the comic art?
#1 got me into comics outright. I've spent more time on /co/ than here since. Because Price's style was so vibrant and lively and different. Every page/expression/detail was a new experience & a blast to look at.
Hickey, Fleecs & Garbowska aren't BAD, they're just... blander? More forgettable? Less inspired? Sometimes they'll doodle something cute that I'll save but there's neither the range nor the creativity that got me hooked. I could name countless fan artists with more distinctive styles.
Then Fosgitt swooced right on in and wew I got those Price feels all over again. Energy, fluidity, the sheer caricatured oversaturated CUTE of everything. His pony's are just inherently FUN to look at. It's such a natural gut reaction for me that having to spell it out feels weird.
But hey, I have to. Because every time an issue comes out that makes me feel happy I drop by /mlp/ to talk about it and errerybody's ready to bomb the IDW office. I admit Fosgitt can be lazy and Price is a memer but they aren't worth SO much bile, surely? It rarely detracts from my enjoyment of their work; sometimes it even accentuates it.
I've seen the memes & the edits & the comparison charts, and those that aren't completely nonsensical paint a vague picture of "bland is good". FFS #42 is probably the GOAT issue they've ever published from an artistic expression perspective and I the storytime loathed it because "too much variety". It's mindboggling.
/faggoty blog rant. I'm genuinely after discussion here. There's clearly insight to be gained but all the *autistic screeching* can only say so much.

Gott abounce, work stuff. Some added context about my shitty taste.
Sara Richard is the GOAT. Head & shoulders above all other pone artists, hands down.

And this is the only time in recent memory that art in the comic has triggered me. Pinkie/Chees FF I think.
I'm gonna try and get a good handle on exactly what I think of each of the artists with examples of what I like/dislike, but for now here's that chart showing who drew/wrote what in case anyone wants it for reference.

Appreciate the effort senpai.
Maybe I made the thread too early in the day IDK.
>>29918837
Probably. It's ded hours for the US and EU is still waking up.
>>29918193
save for interest

>likes Fostgitt more than Hickey
fuck off shIllustrous Q, your bait is weak as shit
Price, Hickey, and Richards are the only artists that are worth anything. The rest can fuck off.
You especially fuck off OP, Fosgitt is a hack and a thief. He'll Google something to steal it, but never to find a character reference and then blame everyone but himself for why it happened.

>Mebberson actually really did quit drawing for IDW comics after people made incest jokes about her cover
I knew she was hair triggered and a bitch but holy shit. Did she really go away from IDW and work with Hasbro directly because of the jokes?

I was gonna compare & contrast the two but I realized all my go-to examples of Hickey art are cartoony Fosgitt-esque caricatures anyway.
Huh.
>>29919738
I don't even remember the name Mebberson.
Did they do the NMM arc?
>>29919694
I'm unphased by this but if you'd like to get some screencaps off your chest be my guest. I only keep tabs on like 3 Twitters, artists don't make the cut.

Fosgitt draws his stuff in this extremely "cartoony" style. While it makes sense in some contexts, for the MLP comics, it comes off as cheap and lazy, especially when compared to the earlier comics, which had an abundance of detail and backgrounds that weren't just solid colors.

Look like Dobson but with hair
>fosgitt thread
Nice, someone would explain this page?
Celestia in the first panel to be precise
>>29919903
You don't need to be anatomical correct to make a great comic
>>29919843
I can get that.
Usually he makes up for it enough that I don't notice but in the Glimmer/Twilight issue he didn't. For some reason it lacked the usual elation and I reeeeeeally picked up on how empty & rushed everything looked.
I figured maybe the novelty had just worn off but then #50 came along and I loved his art.
More than usual, in fact. There was something better about it. Tighter lines or something, IDK.

The purple in the foreground's her hair. Hindlegs are crossed, left foreleg resting on them. What's there not to get?
Oh and her right forelegs lax at her side.
...Wait.
>>29919903
Yeah no that's her wing.
Did she take a slipper off in the prior page? If so it makes sense. I see 2 blotches of yellow and instantly assume they're on matching legs.
The main problem with Fosgitt is not the super deformed cartoony style, it's the lack of reverence for the source material. He doesn't draw Ponyville in his style, he draws a Simpsons-esque American suburb in his style and calls it Ponyville.
He doesn't draw Cloudsdale in his style, he draws a stone fort sitting on a cloud in his style and calls it Cloudsdale.
He draws bipedal ponies in bipedal actions while MLP:FiM ponies have always (and deliberately) been set down as quadrupeds.
>>29919738
Mebberson started working full-time for Disney, that's what happened.
Best artist after Sara Richard was Ben Bates. Sadly he quit the comics industry to go into animation.
I used to like Price, but he's a one trick pony. He keeps drawing the same funny faces.
>>29919751
Hickey just make a cute anime art while Fostgitt make them into cancerous looney toons
>>29920112She's a cute pony with her hair down.
>>29920112
She hot.
>>29919903
My guess is he was trying to do the "s" shape for her legs, but royally fucked it up either due to her proportions or sitting position (or both).
