S1 was the hook. Previous generations of MLP had been so awful we all tuned in to watch the trainwreck of Faust selling out. Instead we got something thoughtful and charming, and we wanted moar. The seasons following progressively moved further away from the charm of S1, but it was still pone, and that's what we wanted. For me S6 had zero magic, but I still watched it because it was better than no pone at all. Same reason I'm watching S7.

It's not all that different from previous generations getting sucked into some soap opera because it had attractive characters and a compelling story arc only to find they're watching a completely different show a decade later out of habit because it their show. And in the case of pone it hasn't gone completely to shit. The animation and VA work is still top flight, maybe better than ever. The writing is uneven, but it always was. The problem is that it's gone to a completely different place than what drew us in in S1. Which is bound to happen over six or seven seasons. It's up to each one of us to decide whether or not it's still our show. I'm still watching, but the days of the show giving me feels are years in the past.
