I served 7 years, all overseas (Europe, Middle East, Africa). I participated in the Bosina & Kosovo wars but I was a fighter mechanic (F-16's pic related), not a soldier.

That's pretty pathetic, but it's true. Some guys totally miss out on the opportunity to get out and explore the world at government expense.
Personally, I didn't spend a minute on base that I didn't have to.

We lost roughly 50,000 troops in Vietnam, that's a very low number for a war we fought over 8 years. The movies and media you see make Vietnam seem like a slaughter for any serviceman sent overseas but the reality is that most battles were just light skirmishes with more losses suffered by the NVA. Junior officers took heavier casualty rates since Vietcong would especially be on the look out for them.

You're forgetting the 150,000 wounded, that survived only because of American medical capabilities. The Vietcong/NVA's losses likewise would have been far lower if they were granted these capabilities. And don't forget about South Vietnam, that took the brunt of the fighting against the commies, and had even higher losses, despite receiving some serious America's help.
