Like with the penguins of madagascar movie, when that was on, they stopped producing the series and made a spin off of King Julien.
So yeah, it seems the movie is the end for mane 6.

Y'all are posting about this like it's a bad choice, but in the end it's inevidable. This show isn't a sitcom or a comedy, it's slice of life centered entirely about character development. Every single episode is about a character learning something.

And guess what? Our mane characters, all 6 of them, are fully developed. They've learned all their lessons, overcame their insecurities, and accepted their flaws. We aren't going to get episodes about them anymore in the same way that we'll never get a proper Celestia episode.

So there's 3 options for the writers; either end the show, turn MLP into something it's not (like an animated sitcom or spongebob clone), or introduce flawed characters that can still learn lessons. I think you all know which one they chose.

Okay anon let me give you a quick rundown on the situation, the thing is that yes, while they may have wasted all their coins on slice of life bullshit with all the characters and trying to add depth to their personalities, they can still do some more with background and origin of the other ones and they could also be doing lots of fucking world building, which i dont know why they fucking don't. They're still missing coltfriends so the circle can be complete and they can spend time with their partners now instead of their friends. They'll occasionally meet to catch up on things. The ones that don't move at least.

Suggest this back when S6 ended and I would've called bullshit.
But I spent the intervening time reading a shitton of comics, and discovered that Marvel hit this very same crossroads back in the 90s. Writers bickered with editors over creativity vs marketability, the latter won, and the fictional universe changed from a coherent narrative to a glorified accounting book. The stories stopped mattering, now they're just a way to keep movie/media/merch patents pinned down.
I don't want to see MLP become another Spongebob guys. The fact that events matter & changes stick is one of the show's greatest strengths. I'd rather it die now than jog in place for another 10 years. I can't take that many FLUTTERSHY LEARNS TO BE BRAVE episodes, I just fucking can't. All things considered, shifting the focus over to a new cast in the same setting sounds inspired.

You seem to fail to understand the concept of "main character". If they hadn't been afraid of fleshing out their world, now you would have the same main characters in a bigger or better one.
Every fucking work of fiction since the dawn of time has had protagonists, villains, recurring characters and background ones. It's simply how it works. When you finish the protagonists' story arc you either think of a new one or you end the story. You don't make new protagonists. Mlp is not a fucking soap opera.

Have you walked into a supermarket recently? (Of course not, you only have KFC but bear with me) The merch is strong enough so every child would at least know its existence.

As for critics, the show was acclaimed around 2010-2012, but nit many professional critics have expressed their opinions for Season 3 onward. We're just a bunch of autistis alone in this crazy fandom, and the movie's reviews will probably give us a clear answer on the public's consensus of the franchise.

i know what a main character is, i just don't understand the importance of them always being the main characters. there have been situations where older characters were replaced by newer ones and it has worked, they do this for villains literally every season for example. if the series were named after the main characters then it makes a lot more sense that they wouldn't be replaced but "my little pony" is a lot more general and so long as it has the same artstyle, theme, and message it would still be "friendship is magic" to me

As others have pointed out, I'm chalking this up to the inept writers. Focusing on a singular, less-developed, "new" character is just a lot easier than living up to previous expectations. At least with Starlight, expectations are low already.
