The Celestia part of the premiere gave us some interesting Celestia-as-chess-player thoughts. Knowing what we know now (that Celestia knew what the Mane 6's cutiemarks looked like vis-a-vis the Tree of Harmony and she personally made sure they were working together for her celebration just before NMM returned, books handily being in small town library/hidden in secret panels ala the Castle of the Two Sisters, etc. etc.), it makes Celestia's seeming whimsical drop of Twilight into Ponyville make far more sense than we'd have known.

Plus, you know having a secret agent (who at the time was NOT retired, this is pre-Tartarus release so the Bugbear Incident hasn't happened) in the background keeping an eye on them. Sweetie Drops being in the shot was not a coincidence.

get rid of Glimmer's Mary Sue writing. I don't much care for her, I'll admit, I thought she was a good villain and had a 'meh' redemption arc, but she's gone full fucking mary sue on us.

no, she's not. Her talent is magic, but it's completely bullshit for her to take on the Changelings without magic, and win. It's also bullshit for her to challenge an Alicorn, said alicorn being taught personally by a millenia-old Princess. Her character is poorly written from the start, and instead of at least learning and growing she instead fucks everything up and is completely unrepentant.

It doesn't matter, Twilight (who has taken a back seat behind Ms. Mary Sue) has changed and grew as the story progressed, she's actually changed for the better. Glimmer hasn't shown any character development.

bullshit. Twilight was fleshed out as an awkward, young unicorn with little knowledge of society as a whole. They did that in a few episodes, and by the end of Season 3 they showed her ascension to Alicorn-hood with the full support of Ponyville, (who, otherwise, would not acknowledge her if she stayed the same shy unicorn). It also fleshed out her friends as both characters and large parts of the show- at this point Applejack's lines and contribution is just "Yeehaw, apples" Rainbow Dash is "Well, I'm fast", Fluttershy is bipolar as fuck without ANY redeeming qualities, Rarity is "TeeHee fashion", and Pinkie is stupid comedic relief without anything else to support her as a character.
