Life becomes significantly harder for maimed animals, especially outdoor ones. They have to relearn a fuck ton of their movements and are incapable of performing some of the tasks they used to be able to do.That pony probably isn't going to be galloping around anymore. They also become much harder to care for and are a larger drain on resources.

Putting animals down is also pretty humane, so there's not much a reason to avoid doing it, besides not wanting to terminate a life.

It's not much of a double standard when both animals inhabit totally different niches. A dog doesn't spend most of it's day outside standing and it can lead a good life even if missing a leg. In the case of breaking bones, the healing process for horses and dogs are different as well. It's very hard to get a horse to lie down, stay still and chill out for months while it's leg heals whereas a dog will happily do that.

Other than that, anecdotally, I know plenty of people who have put down house pets because of bad breaks or accidents. There wasn't much of a double standard where I lived.
