It seemed like everything in FS's character pointed to an abusive foalhood. Her timid personality...the occasional outbursts of anger...her reclusiveness. I figured that's the direction they were taking her.

And seriously, why not?
A significant portion of the "real audience", i.e. little girls DO live in abusive situations. If Hasbro/DHX had a shred of soul they could have used Fluttershy as a positive example that if you do live in an abusive environment life can get better...and you don't have to go on to become an abuser yourself.
Fluttershy was abused but made the decision not to continue the cycle and became a caring nurturer instead.

But Hasbro/DHX didn't have a soul, so they took the cheap & easy route because their business is shilling plastic crap, not doing good in the world.

I'd use Scootaloo (her parents are still a blank page).
Reveal that she's being smacked around by her father...neglected by her mother...whatever. She's angry about it and lashes out at others...particularly younger ponies, weaker than her.

It's Fluttershy who understands what's going on. She recognizes the signs...it makes her flashback to her own fillyhood. After a brief internal struggle she confronts Scootaloo and tells her there's a better way to deal with this.

If the writers have an ounce of talent between them they could come up with a script that was genuinely helpful without being 'after-school-special' preachy or boring.

But they won't.
