It's not about being in denial, we just don't want a negative label associated with us. I'm guessing that I'm not the only one here who was a sperg about the show in public back in 2011, but you soon come to realize how bad you look when you openly call yourself a brony in public.

When I say I'm not a brony, technically speaking it's a flat out lie based on the broad definition of just being a fan and I know that I'm lying. And that's ok, because no matter where you say that you're a brony, whether it be 4chan, reddit, in public, etc, people will start to make assumptions about you. It's often better to just avoid all of that.

Honestly, I can't stand the whole brony-horsefucker distinction. I see it both as a betrayal of the good memories we have from 2010-2012, and as a way of declaring there's no hope that the rest of the fandom could be worth keeping around. There are a lot of people outside /mlp/ I don't want coming here, but that does not and should not mean that we're the only fans worth anything. Yes, there are bronies who give the rest of us a bad name. You can't escape that by insisting that everyone who admits to association with MLP is a loser. If you want to prove you're not like them, you should show it by your behavior.

But if what you want is to kill the happiness the show once brought us, then shoving our enjoyment of MLP under the rug and denouncing all fans who aren't as cynical and jaded as ourselves is a pretty efficient way to do it.
