While Soft Serve tries to decide which way to take you, you have a look around for anything useful.
Your eyes soon fall upon the building nearby. There's some more big leaves as well as a long stick hanging from the holes in it. You might be able to use those, so you grab them up.

There's no metal scoops or little eggshells to be found. There ARE some shiny things on the ground, though. They're see-through pretty and have sharp edges... like sugar! You'll just take those-
"Ah-ah-ah!!" Soft Serve hisses, quickly trotting over and pulling you back. "No broken glass, Buddy. It's dangerous; it'll give you bad booboos."
You back away. Sugar is nice, but it's not worth booboos.
"Come on." Soft Serve thumps your shoulder and points to the left path. "This way."
You nod. You were going to pick that path anyway! Carefully, you trot around the broken glass and follow Soft Serve towards the big castle.
The path you're trotting on is all smashed up. You look around as you follow Soft; all of the buildings around you are broken.
All of them.
The closer you get to the castle, the more broken everything starts to look.
And it looks like the castle is the most broken thing of all...

As you and Soft Serve look around, you see something in the door of the castle. It's hard to see, but it has a sad taste sticking to it. The saddest you've ever tasted, in fact; it's so heavy and strong that it almost makes you gag.
And worse still, the only way to reach it and the castle is by crossing water. Big water. Even bigger than the bath was. And this water is moving, and full of rocks and sticks. You shiver and back away from it.
Soft Serve trots up beside you, his forehead all wrinkled up when he sees the water. "I'm getting deja vu here, how about you, Buddy?" he asks.
You don't know what that means, but you nod anyway.
Suddenly, you hear a rustling sound. You and Soft Serve turn towards it; Soft Serve tastes scared. "Somepony's coming!" he hisses. "Quick Buddy, hide somewhere and stay quiet!"

Quick! turn into a rock!

"Hey, wimps!" a high-pitched voice yells. "Where're ya hidin'?"

It's hard to see when you're a rock, but you manage well enough to see two interesting things.
The first is that the noises are being made by a changeling.
The second is that the changeling has a cool hat!
That's more than enough to get you to drop your angry rock disguise and trot out to talk. You chirp up at the changeling, getting his attention. "Oh, what's up?" he asks.
You point up at his head.

The changeling smiles and poses, showing off his hat. "You see dat?" he asks proudly. "Yeah, we're pretty great."

The changeling tilts his head, looking like he's starting to understand you better. "What, you forget your hat?"

The changeling narrows his eyes. "Uh, no."

"Don't talk to my Buddy like that, you flying rat!" Soft Serve yells back with a snort. "If you mess with him, you have to answer to me!"
The changeling doesn't look, sound, or taste scared. "Ooh hoo hoo!" he laughs, showing off his pointy teeth. "Come on, tough guy! I am going to mess. You. Up!"

The ball of magic flies towards you, but you jump and roll aside to dodge it. It flies right past you and Soft, slamming into a tree and bursting into little sparkles. Soft Serve scuffs his hoof on the ground and lowers his head.

He relaxes and looks at you, confused. You step towards the changeling and shake your head sadly.

Even though he tastes scared, the changeling shakes his head. "You gotta be kiddin' me!" he says, stamping his hoof on the ground. "Dis sucks; I hate ties! Let's break it already!" The changeling flaps his wings and flies up into the air, where Soft Serve can't reach him. He glares down at you, then at Soft, then back at you. After doing that a few times, he smiles meanly and loops through the air, flying back down really fast!

It all happens too fast.
The changeling is zooming in to attack, but it's not you that he's zooming at. It's Soft Serve. You squeak and lunge out in between the changeling and your buddy, flapping your little wings at top speed and hoping with all your hope that you can get there in time.
You just barely do. The changeling's horn smacks right into your head.

The Shiny Eggy Shell protects your soft noggin, and the changeling bounces right off with a shriek. He tumbles down away from you, almost flopping to the ground before he pulls his wings back and zips back up into the air, flying crookedly. He shakes his head. "Oh, dat's a skull fracture fer sure..." he grumbles. His horn glows and he shoots another scatter shot of magic down at you.
Or... you THINK he fired it at you.

Soft Serve isn't happy with that answer. He turns to you.

Suddenly, you hear something off in the direction the changeling. It sounds like the noise your wings make when you fly, but more... well, more.
"Aw, crap." the changeling mutters.
"What, what is it now?" Soft Serve asks.
The changeling looks back at you. "Anything else?" he asks. "Think fast, let's go!"

Squeaking fearfully, you get your little wings working and flit into the castle, hiding in corner and squeezing your eyes shut. You hope as hard as you can that the other changelings don't find you and Soft.
The beating of wings gets louder. You hear a mad chittering noise outside. It's like a bajillion voices talking at once in crazy, scary voices. You hear words in your language that you've never heard before.
"Destroy all traces of ponykind!"
"Every stallion, mare, and foal will be punished!"
"We will avenge Queen Chrysalis!"
"Descend upon them like a cloud of death!"

Shivering, you stay curled up in the corner with your ears folded up, trying to ignore the mean, scary voices and the noises like big rocks being thrown through the air really fast. Soon, the last of the rock noises are thrown, and the last of the voices become quieter. So do the buzzing wings, and everything is quiet once again. You get up, teeth chattering and knees shaking. Those changelings felt so mad... so MEAN! Why are they acting that way?
Will you start acting that way, too?
With a sniffle, you try not to think about that. You creep out from behind your hiding place and look around the castle. Like outside, the walls are cracked and the ground is torn up. There are also stairs you could climb, but they have a big hole in the middle of them. The whole place stinks of fear, sadness, and anger; if there was ever any love or happiness here, it's gone now. The feelings are strongest around a lumpy thing on the ground nearby. It lays beside a big tear in the floor and is hidden under another bed leaf. It drips with sadness, and it smells kind of funny. You don't really want to go near it. But there's a shiny, fancy eggshell next to it that looks like it might be useful. It's too big for you, though...

Soft looks around for whatever is making you cry. When he sees the lumpy thing under the bedleaf, he stiffens up. Slowly, he turns back to you with a scared look on his face. "Buddy, did you look under that sheet?"
You shake your head. Soft Serve sighs with relief. "Thank Celestia..." he mumbles. "Don't look under there, okay Buddy? It's a bad thing. Not for little colts."

You nod your head fast enough to make yourself dizzy. Whatever is under there, it tastes so sad and smells so weird that you don't really want to get close to it anyway.
...But maybe if you try to be nice to it, it'll become less sad?
Holding your breath, you take little steps towards it. You lift a hoof and place it over the bedleaf. Whatever is under it is cold and wet, and kind of squishy. It makes you shiver.
But you nuzzle up to it anyway. Just a little.

The lumpy thing doesn't answer you. It doesn't move at all, so you let it go. It's just as sad and stinky as before.
But now that you've hugged it, there's a little happiness stuck to it, too. That makes you smile. You ask for its shiny eggshell.

It doesn't answer. You take the eggshell, and it doesn't tell you to stop. So, you guess it's okay! You bring it to Soft, who's looking at something shiny on the wall.

Soft Serve looks down at you. "Huh? Buddy, where did you get that helmet?"

You point at the lumpy thing. Soft Serve frowns and shakes his head, taking the helmet. "No, Buddy." he says, his voice very serious. "You can't take that. It's not for wearing. It's for... remembering somepony who wore it."
You blink. A hat you can't wear? That sounds silly.

You think Soft is wrong, so you put the eggshell on.

You scrunch your face up. You wish you knew the words to tell Soft that the lumpy pony didn't say you couldn't have the helmet, or at least to ask why you need a helmet to remember a pony that's right there!
But you don't know the words, so you just sit down stubbornly. You think this helmet could help!

Soft Serve trots towards you and takes the helmet off. You taste anger on him as he carries it back over to the lumpy thing and gently puts it down.
"Buddy," he says, "when I say no, there's a reason for it. If I don't tell you the reason, it's because you're a baby. You're too young to have to know about the bad things in the world. I want you to be a happy bug, because happiness is hard to find after you lose it. So don't touch the helmet."
You chirp quietly. You don't know what Soft means. You're not sure you want to. So you look at the shiny thing on the wall instead.
