It's rather more limiting than I had expected, being more in the way of a how-to guide than a world/campaign-assistance guide. It's not that I didn't expect there to be a lot on 'how to tabletop' here, especially since this is literally supposed to be babby's first RPG.

What I was hoping for was more material about the world itself to help people develop their own stories. Places you want to visit, mysterious totems or relics to hunt for, other nations to get lost in, important characters to encounter... that's what I'm surprised there isn't much of. An entire book, and we've got... what, one new creature, I think? (The Mohawk)

Maybe they'll be expansion campaigns if this book does well, and that'll provide more of what we were looking for.

Posting some home-brew races from previous thread, slightly updated due to commentary. (nerfed Changeling by removing Telekinesis and nerfing their fly to d4, nerfed Buffalo by lowering d10 body to d8, diamond dog's default racial buffed to d8, griffon unchanged out of uncertainty what to take away)

Yeah Savage Worlds did that originally: you would range from 1d4 to 1d12 (d20 isn't used in the game) to represent tiers of your expertise in any task. It IS a pretty fun/simple mechanic to use though.

In Savage Worlds the DC for almost any given task is 4, but in SW upgrades/downgraded dice levels usually do use modifiers of +2 or -2 depending on situation. Or increasing the DC sometimes. Working with no modifiers at all in ToE seems like a good idea for first time players to avoid confusion, just going up / down a die level instead.

The 'Exploding Hoof' section also borrows a little bit from Savage Worlds: in SW there's a thing called 'Ace' where if you get the highest possible roll on a die, you may roll that same die again and add to the result (ie roll a 6 on d6, roll d6 again and get 4, total is 10). There are also the concept of rolling multiple dice (usually your skill die and your 'Lucky' die) and picking the highest of either result like you do with Trait/Talent rolls here.

There seems to be a good bit borrowed from SW actually but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Savage Worlds is fucking awesome, up with GURPS I'd say it's the most open / customizable system in that you can play just about any setting (where as DnD you're kind of locked into high-fantasy and World of Darkness tied to whichever among mage/vampire/whatever setting you're running)

You can go back even further than that, AD&D has exploding dice on some damage rolls, I remember the musket had it. 1d10 exploding.
It's a pretty common mechanic, it's a good "crit mechanic" that encourages players to at least try when they're facing seemingly insurmountable odds.
Dark Heresy has exploding dice, as does Shadowrun for it's edging rolls. IIRC Riddle of Steel has exploding dice too.

His name is hastebracer so it only seems fitting that he'd wair bracers.

Also, he wants to become one of celestias knights and is training towards that. So he wears the bracers to condition his legs to the weight of armour.
