Canon and Word of God sort of speaks against it on several points. (Luna transformed into NMM, she wasn't replaced by NMM. She was banished IN the moon, not ON the moon. WoG has her as being "asleep" during the banishment.)

As for Nightmare Moon having friends, that was sort of the point of the entire rebellion. The banishment wouldn't end just because NMM gets a friend, although if she had made a friend beforehand the banishment would likely never have happened in the first place.
You can look at the NMM timeline in S5 finale to get a bit more information on how Luna actually is when she's Nightmare Moon. "Friends" is debatable and I guess more of a technicality, but she does have loyal subjects (including the element of Loyalty herself as part of her personal guard) while still being very much "Nightmare Moon".

Friends won't change Nightmare Moon, as gaining friends (and/or subjects) was the entire point of becoming Nightmare Moon

Magical, surreal but calm landscapes like the one we see. Fantastic and imaginative even by Equestrian standards. Lonely, too, because it's all Luna really knows.

She's not out of the woods yet though. Characters like the mane6 and the CMC might have a pivotal role in making Luna accepted, otherwise she'll just fall back into old habits.
Without further intervention, her dreams will grow darker and deeper again. It's sort of inevitable in her position, because nothing has actually really changed. Celestia still pulls the strings and actively overrules her at times, ponies still sleep through her beautiful night, and the only saving grace is that she's sort of feared now that the creatures of Equestria have seen what she's capable of. Ponies like the CMC MUST return Luna's favor for them or we'll probably get another NMM sooner or later.

What are you're personal headcanon's for what exactly the Elements did to turn Nightmare Moon into Luna?

See, I've got this headcanon about what the magic of friendship did to Sunset Shimmer, which is that all they did was strip her of the power that the element of magic provided. It was the process of losing her power that made Sunset confront who and what she had become. So, at the moment, my headcanon is that the same thing happened to Luna.

Though that is subject to change from time to time. The only thing I will not accept is that NMM and Luna are separate entities, because I think the alternative (that Luna turned evil/became insane with envy) is much more interesting.
