A lot of her beauty is manufactured as opposed to natural, as she wears lots of makeup, fake eyelashes, etc. but she does take good care of herself with the spa and everything. Her parents aren't exactly striking, so she got lucky when it comes to the genetic lottery I guess.

Most beautiful unicorn in Ponyville means she's more beautiful than Twilight (who was a unicorn back then), and that should come as no surprise with the amount of effort she puts on her appearance. There's not a lot of competition in Ponyville though, as it's a small town with an even smaller unicorn minority.

With all that in mind, she's above-average, but not jaw-dropping and probably not style magazine material (like Fluttershy is). More of a "hottest girl in school" kind of deal for Rarity.

It's the combination of natural prettiness, style, taste and a beautiful heart that makes her so fabulous.

Also Fluttershy got PF's attention because of her unconventional beauty in shyness, as Rarity's more regular show-biz approach to presenting Fluttershy didn't impress her. I never thought of Rarity as a top model material, but being beautiful and appealing to FOTM model business crowd seem pretty different to me.

Fluttershy's high beauty is definitely conventional. Conventional enough that she can pull off appearing on the front cover of half a dozen or so magazines in about as many styles. Hell, one of the styles she pulls off is emo-ish rebellious teen, which is definitely, DEFINITELY not part of her natural shyness.
I guess Fluttershy looks good wearing almost anything no matter what she does, while Rarity knows exactly what to wear and do to look good.

Fluttershy acting dejected, uncertain, emotionally reactive is what caught PF's attention in the first place, I'd say emo style was in that vein as well. It was less about being a "proper" model and more about being natural, and Rarity had no chance at winning that. And also, lanky ponies seem to be Equestria's beauty standard and Fluttershy fits the bill more.

Watch the episode again. Rarity wasn't trying to be a model, she was trying to show off her fashion line. She recruited Fluttershy because of her style of natural grace.

Photo Finish decided she liked the model over the clothes, and that's what sparked the whole conflict.

Rarity then continued Fluttershy's modeling career by cheering for her when Twilight was using her magic to force Fluttershy to be clumsy. The crowd picked up the cheer precisely because Rarity knew exactly what to wear and how to look good.

Now sit back down, ruffian, and don't ever let me catch you talk about Rarity like that again.

Ironically because this was the episode that made me finally fall for her, arguably more than Suited for Success. I was in a situation similar to that and it was not pretty at all. Suited for Success is up there as the classic, strong lesson, catchy song, funny jokes, memes, it has it all.
Sisterhooves Social is another episode with a good lesson, showing a different side of Rarity.
Sweet and Elite also features some important character development, and a pretty good song.
Rarity Investigates is just fun. The whole episode and the dynamic between Dash and Rarity is hilarious, and I never grow tired of it.
Rarity Takes Manehattan is the episode where I feel with her the most. The Generosity song is kinda dumb, but the episode is otherwise rock solid.
Those are all top tier, with the second tier probably being GIYC, DAPS, CB, MiM and maybe SUYL.

Rarity has become one of the most well-developed characters on the show. Her, Fluttershy (or as faggots call her, "nu Shy") and RD have gone through the most emotional development of the M6, but especially Rarity.

All of the "Rara a whore" memes of the past have looked increasingly silly as newer episodes have come out. She's coquettish, but also classy.

Knowing that a lot of new writers get very basic stories to "train" it's possible that Rarity gets whoever is easiest to write her with. And that's AJ of course. Proper Raritwi episode has so much potential exactly because you can dig really deep, there are so much possible interactions. I think that's why it's generally avoided now for all the wrong reasons.
Look at something like Twidash or Raridash. Both are rarely put together but generally they bounce off each other fairly well. And I think if given a proper plot there's no reason Raritwi wouldn't work just as great. As long as it's not something like The Hooffields and McColts where both characters don't even matter.

Yeah, there's definitely more depth in Raritwi than there is in Rarijack, so tackling it is a greater challenge.
Speaking of Raridash though, can I just point out how great Rarity Investigates was? Both Rarity and Tabitha were in top form. Rarity is in her zone with the Shadow Spades character, clearly enjoying herself, Tabitha just captures that perfectly. Even the first Canterlot dinner when they meet Wind Rider, or that singsongy good night. That episode is just pure joy, seeing her so happy warms my heart.

I adore Rarijack episodes. Their banter is too perfect, and I love their relationship. Their talents and interests are completely different, but they both stick to their principles. Their principles are often pretty different (as in Look Before You Sleep, most famously), but by now, they've garnered a lot of respect for each other. Their interactions are so interesting and they feel more natural. I love every episode with these two. On screen together, they just sing.

...but we have had a lot of Rarijack episodes. I really want to see more Raritwi. It didn't occur to me just how rare that was. If we could get Amy Keating Rogers back to write a Raritwi episode, I could die happy.

I like Rarijack as well, Made in Manehattan was just so perfect. But when you look at Rarity interactions, it's almost always with Applejack. Nowadays Pinkie joins in a lot more but I didn't really like them together in S6.
After S1 basically all remaining Raritwi and Rarishy was dropped. I would personally trust Larson with Raritwi episode. He would definitely give them a meaningful story. If he ever returned that is.

While I don't have much against the Raripie by itself, I'm really not satisfied at how it was handled in Gift of Maud Pie and Curry Up Your Life. Both of those episodes were subpar to what I expect in Rarity episodes.

LBYS was such a perfect introduction to Rarijack it really made it stick to this day. I am amazed how they nailed the whole thing. And in MiM it was so great to see already established and developed dynamics work so well. I wish they'd spent this much work on other pairs.

LBYS was great because it introduced the dynamic, escalated the conflict and then resolved it with both parties understanding their differences, plus it featured some top notch adorkable Twilight. It was a really small-scale story built mostly on the two characters and dialogue more than some outside elements.
MiM worked so well because it felt like we've finally moved on from repeating LBYS for the hundredth time. Instead they took their lessons learned, that both AJ and Rarity have different strengths and weaknesses, and that sometimes you have to put your bullshit aside and be more tolerant, and then went from there to make something great. AJ immediately admits that Manehattan simply isn't the right place for her, Rarity admits gardening and construction work is hardly something she knows anything about. But they both also know and respect that the other pony is the opposite in that regard and work with it.
This could've very well been an episode where Rarity has a better idea of drawing in more people by turning it into a fashion show and AJ wanting to do a rodeo dangnabbit yeehaw or some shit. They could've played the down-to-earth/prissy dynamic duo again and make another meh episode, but instead they both behave reasonably, empathically, and they cooperate, because they're already past that bullshit. That is what brings the episode above others.
I feel like sometimes the writers just get the characters right. And while the episode didn't break any new ground or really stand out in some manner, it's still overall a very nice episode that I can't say anything against it.

Couldn't have said it better myself, anon.

And MiM for me was the ultimate SoL episode. There wasn't even a character conflict, the characters were working with each other, not against. Coco's apartment was comfy, the play was really cute and it had a very special ambience to it. The atmosphere was top-notch there. It was so nice to just see everyone brought together by collective effort. I guess the whole bringing the community together thing really resonated with me. These warm feelings are why I watch the show and it's nice to be reminded that they're still here. I think it's the only recent episode I've re-watched more than once along with Amending Fences.

Hell, that whole S5 Rarity episode trinity was so good, I don't think we'll ever get something this great again. Just 3 weeks of Rarity. Good times.

Her mindset is a bit stuck in the turn of the last century in matters like these, and she often berates cultures that aren't part of her own. She's often the most vocal about calling out "ruffians" and the like. She insults the diamond dogs for their uncivilized behavior, and when the uninformed ponies are spreading false rumors and hearsay about Zecora Rarity makes an actual observation and judges her stripes as "garish". I like Rarity because she embodies a lot of admirable traits. Politeness, tactfulness, refinement but also being a hard worker, being passionate and compassionate, etc.
Being someone who both takes great care of themselves, holds themselves to high standards and seeks to uplift others while also being a hard and ambitious worker are all things I aspire to be. Watching her in the show actually got me trying out sewing again, and has me reconsider my future as a craftsman rather than an office clerk or something.

I feel sill for saying but then I think stuff like this was the point of the show to begin with. To provide some kind of positive role models and characters to relate with.

She has her flaws ofcourse, as any person should. But seeing her work on overcoming her prejudice and such only makes her more likable to me.
