2nd Album info:

>What is this, though?
The 2nd /MLP/ Plays album, that’s what! Following the success of the first one, we decided that the world needs another. Like before, it will be a compilation album from the musicians of /mlp/. There is no specific genre that has to be adhered to, but there will be more guidelines to follow this time.

>What are the guidelines?
This time around, it’s been decided that the music for this album has to be pony related. “But what what does that mean!?” you may be wondering. Well, here is what we mean:
Songs need to be original or redone covers based off of the below conditions. It may be but is not limited to:
•Cover/remix of the music from the show.
•An original that is based off of a riff/motif/recognizable theme from the show
•Original piece that uses samples from the show (probably more than just one gasp at the end. Should really be part of the song)
•Original songs with pony related lyrics, like "Waifu Blues" or "All Ponies Must Be Perfect" from the last album.
•Redoing the music and lyrics to be pony related. Mr. Bones's Wild Ride (Hotel California Parody) from the last album is a good example.
•Includes /mlp/ related maymays/jokes/culture.
•No singing over instrumentals of other artists’ songs. "I Am Awesome" is an example. It would, however, be OK if the instrumental was redone.

>Are there any other guidelines?

I'm no musician, but I always had this idea of turning Alice's Restaurant:

into a MLP related song, and name it something like Rarity's Boutique or Twi's Library.

I would if I could, honestly. I've learnt the basic music theory but I just can't get my hands dirty and make even decent stuff.

How can I begin to make songs that doesn't suck if I already know the basics? Is there a nice way to do it? Everything seems so overwhelming when you start.
>>
>>29729096
There is no way to make "good" stuff when you're starting out. I have the same problem, where I know the theory, but I never can create anything, because I can hear that it's shit. But honestly, start simple. Find one thing you want to work on, and make a piece around it. Make one or two songs where your focus is on honing in on one or two skills, rather than the the goal being to make something "good." Then, once you feel more comfortable with that, find something else you want to do better, and work on that. The more specific you get, the better off you'll be.

Ah snap man that ain't bad. For "Becoming Popular", I particularly like the first ~30 seconds. I think that's the strongest bit, and the instrumental fits the best with the vox there. I'd love to hear the feeling that part has in the rest of the song.

>>29727316
True, but I'm hoping we can get enough to warrant a video. Again, thanks. It's good to know you're still willing to help with this.

>>29727999
checked. Also, I'm not rip. I'll be at everfree northwest. I think one of our guys is, however.

>>29729096
My best general advice is do and suck as much as possible. You get better by doing and studying other songs. Listen for all the little parts and how it's put together. A lot can be gathered from that. We can also tell you how much you suck and how to get better kek.

>>29729280
I could
>>
>>29727772
The music you are using doesn't apply well with the vocals. Don't get me wrong, the music is fine, but it's like you just added the vocals because you can.

let me give you a good example that goes well both music and vocals:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HI_k9iT5hY

Wish i could show you pony songs that uses classical instruments and structures as example, but i have nothing at the moment.
>>
>>29727772
>>29733668
>>29733771

I think most of the trouble comes from the fact that it is vocals from a pop song that are being shoehorned into an essentially polar opposite genre

I could have gone the traditional remix route and added all sorts of production elements to the vocals to try and cover up some of the awkward phrasing, but for this project I was aiming to leave the vocals completely alone, and treat them as recitative that acts in a supporting role equal to the orchestra rather than have them be the focal point

I find there is an interesting bell curve when it comes to pony music of this genre, where if you don't reference to the show enough be it through lyrics or other direct material, you can come across as being disingenuous and on the other hand, if you start with nothing but material directly from the show, and craft a piece that arises solely from that material, it yields a quite similar outcome

Does /mlp/ plays need cover art?
I can't music but I can draw
>>
>>29739478
First: maybe, do you have something to show?
Second: it's to early to think about the cover art. Like the thread says, it's looking for talents because there's a huge lack of songs and massive amount of shitposting on /mlp/

The tentative plan this time around is that this project will likely become a short EP because of lack of interest. Additionally, this may be the last thing /mlp/ plays does now that everyone's beginning to move on with their lives.
>>
we could always just extend the release date to allow this thread to pick up steam.

besides, remember the only form of advertisment we get in terms of getting people here is the actual thread being up with COLLAB ALBUM etched into the stone of the OP

i'll have you know that i thought this thread was dedicated to playing video games, like an /mlpvg/ by the name until i clicked it the dropbox file.

It's hit and miss. At times, the orchestra complements the voice and at others, it feels like they've been mushed together.

Art of Dress sounds weirdly somber, it's hit and miss

gonna post a few raps i made, all in early stages r n, i don't think they're going to end up looking anything like this but what the hell.
Not like i know how to do tone or anything either, dynamics in tone for something like this makes my head spin.

name of song : probably something along the name of "Epilogue" or something.
Sample - main riff from 'Gives you Hell'
about chrisi
https://pastebin.com/p5XTZNe4

Name; something along the lines of "Darkside"
Sample (right now) first bass bit of "The National Anthem" by Radiohead.
https://pastebin.com/hZeRhLhB
this one needs hella polishing, the rhyming is all over the place. but i do like this more so-far than the chrisi song, for the record.

then i have a- i think a Slice of Life rap, happier rap as a concept and then a Pinkie Pie/ Pinkamena rap as a duet in the style of one voice, different tones.

got a couple more concepts on the rise but that's really all that's definite in that department.

Glad to see you're putting together another album, and thanks again for including my orchestral arrangement of Giddy Up on the last one. If you want, you guys can feel free to include this in the new project; I asked Greg earlier if he'd mind, and he had no problem with it at all.

Basically, I just took a Vocaroo that Greg had posted on the board ages ago in response to people asking for him to say some lewd stuff in MAS Dash's voice and put together an early 90's Eurodance-style track to mix the vocals with, the joke being to parody groups like Culture Beat, La Bouche, etc.

Those of you familiar with the 4CC might recognize it from one of the few times it was played on-air (though I don't believe it's ever been heard in its intended context as IWTCIRD's goalhorn during an official match), or from the brief animation Greg was nice enough to agree to do which played prior to our first match this past Winter Cup.

In either case, keep up the great work, and good luck with the album.

id contribute to this if i felt my kinda genre would fit in. not sure how an instrumental metal track would work

it WOULD use the MLP theme as an underlying base, just maybe shifted to minor or played in a way that made it fit with the tuning. not sure though
