>A terrible darkness from pony's past that threatens to doom us all
Yeah it's totally Grogar. Calling it again.

Still a 7-8.5 out of 10 like last month's issue. It's still holding up very solid as a story. The reveal that Shadowlock is doing this not for a villainous goal but for a noble one is a bit refreshing: I was initially under the impression he was a servant of whatever darkness he's trying to stop. The show rarely does villains like that, if ever, though the comic has done it before... really, really poorly. I don't want to start a tangent but just going to say that Shadowlock is already leagues above the utter travesty that is Radiant Hope. He shows complexity in his actions: he actually apologizes early on, fully aware that what he's doing isn't entirely in the right but carries that burden because he thinks it is necessary. His plan is insane but reasonably controlled to avoid doing too much damage, and in turn he's treated with both animosity and mercy by the mane characters.

Though him being a 'sympathetic' character also has a few problems: most notably, last comic I questioned why he even needed to steal the books rather than simply ask for them and do what he will knowing the memory loss will prevent her from noticing anything awry. Now, I am lead to ask why he is doing this PERIOD if he just wants to prevent a catastrophe. Twilight spelling out the message of not learning from history aside, it really makes so little sense to choose to antagonize everyone in Equestria when stopping disasters is exactly what they strive to do. It reads like the only reason he's doing this is, from a meta perspective, is to cause conflict to pan out the comic for two issues that otherwise shouldn't really exist.
>>
>>29718627
I can possibly excuse it on account of his mental state, his fatigue, maybe he's seen some shit, but this is what people generally tend to mean when they say 'edgy': intentionally excluding the help of all others to do it yourself because it's your fight or you can't trust ponies or some shit? He's arguably moved up from American Box-Art Kirby to Ryuko Matoi on the edge scale. I think it's possible to do villains who mean to do good and still be at odds with the protags, but in this scenario it just doesn't make a lot of sense to stave off disaster by causing more disaster.

Besides that, the middle was fun, humorous action with all of the Mane 6 getting some great screen time, some fun cameos by qt reporter pone from the Pigasus FF issue and lots of decent jokes, though this also suffers from the exact same problem as last issue too: the pacing slowed to a crawl for half the book to go over all these various side-plots of Shadowlock's. The initial battle wrapped up in a clean amount of time but taking on all those side plots poses the risk of dedicating too much to what could almost be considered mid-adventure SoL that takes too much from the core plot. We're 2/3's of the way done and we still know nothing about Shadowlock himself, where he comes from or what evil he's fighting (in fact i'm starting to wonder if we'll actually see what ties into S7 at all until the end of the third issue) that sets them up for being too rushed in their ending.

Still this was a fun comic, and I'd say it was a step up above last week's for sure given Twilight and her friends actually act much more proactively to stop Shadowlock now.

No problem. I know the comics aren't nearly as well as they used to be for most Anons, but storytiming them all along with the books is still my small way of giving back for all the fun I've had here over the years. It's well worth the time and money to me.
Especially if some of them turn out well enough that an Anon feels like getting them when they otherwise would've been unaware that one of them existed. And only if they actually want them because they like the comic. I stay quiet while storytiming for a reason.

8.5/10. Its got alot of good jokes, the art feels solid, and everyone felt in character.

not a whole lot happened this comic, it seemed more like an exposition episode, but overall it was a fun romp, and definitely pretty good.

That being said, kind of expecting things to crash to a halt in the next issue due to not having enough time to wrap shit up.

Which is pretty retarded given how She's the big gun of the group; AJ can kick shit. that's it. Pinkie's an ADHD retard. Rarity is a fashionista (Disregarding shit like how she "accidentally" can turn ponies to gems in the books).

Book canon indicates they were pure evil; they did try and take over the world by genociding the native race in the book they came from.

Was Frankenstein's monster even evil in the original book? I thought he was just lonely and too emotional.

As for the original Martians, they were driven to that out of necessity. Their own planet was dying and they needed a new home.

Let's be real: humans would have done the same thing as the Martians under the same circumstances.

>>
>>29718797
>Was Frankenstein's monster even evil in the original book? I thought he was just lonely and too emotional.

Depends on how you wish to judge him. He started out purely 100% good, but over the book was slowly corrupted to be more and more evil and cruel due to his mistreatment by Humans, the doctor and bitter lonliness and fear.
by the end of the book he'd committed multiple murders and was a cold hearted criminal with zero empathy for other humans, but he'd had that driven into him by the evils of the humans he'd encountered along the way.

So he was evil at the end, but one might wish to dismiss him as being truly villainous due to the torment that he was put through as being not his fault.

Yes. Except the martians here are ponified green men as opposed to the giant octopi piloting laser-shooting tripods.
>>
>>29719029
It's going to end on a cliffhanger. Shadow Lock will fail to destroy the evil, get sent to jail, his pleas ignored by the other ponies.

Then the final panel will show that the book he really needed to erase is somewhere in Sunburst's personal collection.

In the season finale Starlight will accidentally unleash the evil by reading the book.
>>
I don't see comic 51 on yayponies.

Why would you all go to sleep when the only reason you were there was to wait for the guy and ambush him! And Twilight even KNEW he was going to show up. What kind of contrived bullshit is this?
>>
>>29720284
It was called "setting up a trap" you dumbass.
>>
>>29720286
Then why did they need to actually be asleep? The guy didn't even notice Twilight's absence, there's no way he would notice them faking it.

I just don't understand why you would go to the museum with the explicit intention of catching a guy, and then fall asleep ten minutes later because Rarity got tired. Trap or not. Surely Twilight can think of a plan that doesn't leave all five of her friends defenseless while she tackles the bad guy alone.

Friend, you seem to be taking this personally. All I'm saying is, if Twilight was planning to set up a trap, why wouldn't she tell her friends about it? Why leave the five of them helpless and unprotected instead of in a position to help her or defend themselves if needed? It's out of character.

Anyone notice that whoever planned the sound-effects had more fun with puns than Dav Pilkey?
>>
>>29718492
I think I gave the previous one a 4, so I'll give this one a 3 because even less happened.

The fight with the monsters wasn't interesting and could be reduced to "hey recognize this literary reference? ok cool bye." I will say that the fact that the Lovecraft monster just fell into the earth, presumably to lay dormant for untold eons, and Twilight is only concerned about the book itself, gave me a hearty chuckle.

Then the same thing happened from the previous comic, where everyone splits up and does different things. At least this time there's a better reason for it than "everyone's being unreasonably unhelpful and also we forgot there was a library lol." It still comes off as pointless since we only see the inception of the conflicts and not the resolution. Why not cut the reenactment site altogether (since LITERALLY NOTHING happens) and show them fighting Mane-iac and the gangsters? If you're not going to go that far then you might as well condense it all into a single-page montage.

The resolution was fine I guess except they dedicated almost a whole page to Pinkie pretending to be a mummy. I don't know if this bothers anyone else but it seems like every panel takes up more space than it needs to. Like if you just shrunk everything you could fit more on a single page and it would make the story move faster.
>>
>>29718492
The art was good, some of the references were fun and although it's on thin ice with all this "we'll point out the plotholes ourselves which makes them okay", I'm still having fun. Also good Scott Adams banter.
>>
>>29721597
For instance, why is this >>29718412 divided into six largish panels when it's supposed to be a high tension actiony moment? Why not split it into smaller panels to convey Twilight rushing to fix the problem and then frantically flipping the pages? One of the panels is just to show the book by itself ffs, show stuff actually happening!

Same goes for the jokes. A whole half a page showing the classroom just to have a joke about AJ teaching them how to make apple pies? Condense that shit. The bit with the pony and the librarian could be shrunk too. (By the way, the joke about her requesting the cyclops book doesn't even fucking work because she's clearly scared, she should be deadpan and oblivious for it to be funny. Just picture a Maud-like character in her place.)

Then there's pages like this >>29718461 that could easily be half a page or less. Look at all that empty space in the panel with RD and Rarity! Fucking draw Fluttershy smaller and they'll all fit in half the space. And why do we need a whole page showing the exterior of the reenactment site >>29718457 when we already saw it the previous page? The art isn't even good enough to excuse it.

I'm mad. Mad about panels. 3/10.

>>29724990

>>
>>29718492
7/10
It was nice, a lot better than the trash that usually comes from the comics.
Now watch as they pull a reflections and what was a decent setup becomes a clusterfuck towards the end.
>>
>>29725085
I'm hoping for something nice since we have a new writer to the comics in this arc. Maybe, just maybe, we will have something worth while. Even if they only have one issue to resolve it.
>>
>>29725031
Bullshit. Shadows stated a reason for his actions, and we're beginning to understand what his motivation is.
There's some sort of ancient evil that is in danger of awakening, and he's trying to erase all information that could possibly link to what it is.

Just because they don't drop the name and backstory of the evil the second shadowlock appears doesn't mean they're not slowly explaining things.
>>
>>29725115
All of that (not much) in a couple word balloons at the beginning, and then a whole lot of nothing for the rest of the comic. What's the point of having Shadowlock escape a second time? They could've moved the truce to the halfway point and gone in more depth about his mission. As it stands they're going to have to explain everything and resolve it all in one issue, since this is only a three-parter.
>>
>>29725115
That should've happened a fucking issue ago, dumb IDWanker.

Even Re-fucking-lections wasn't dragging like this fucking arc.
>>
>>29725203
>That should've happened a fucking issue ago, dumb IDWanker.

Its called subtlety. You do a giant ass text dump at the start you end up making stuff feel rushed and artificial (what villain shows up, Explains EVERYTHING about himself at the drop of a hat, and then moves on?)
>>
>>29718574
>explanation for why CMC don't ever move up a grade
??
where was that at?
>>
>>29725219
Explain on the first issue he's trying to avoid a disaster, and on this one explain WHAT disatster. Boom, padding avoided.

2 issues and both divert the story to show us some HEE-LAA-REEUS antics where the group splits for some wacky, wacky distraction from the weak ass plot.

And this issue ends with what? With the group again being split for more WACKY adventures.
>>
>>29725219
How is it more subtle to have the villain explain his motives during his second appearance instead of his first? That's not what subtlety means.
>>
>>29725333
Eh, he must be trying to defend the character because the antagonist is deep and troubled so he identifies with him and other things that overweight morons say all the time to try looking cool beyond their fat rolls.

The book Shadow Lock pulled the "Marshans" from was titled "Marsh Attacks". So these are apparently ponified versions of the ACK ACK ACK Martians from "Mars Attacks", instead. They died because their heads exploded when they heard Slim Whitman music, rather than just dying of the common cold like the Martians did in the original "War of the Worlds".
