Twilight: I can't really believe your story Anon, buildings with over 100 levels? Flying boats bigger than Ponyville? And yet there's no magic in your world? Please.
>Growing tired of Twilight's berating, you go out into the world to prove her wrong.

That's the prompt that started it all. So what is thread about? It's about Anon bringing human science and inventions to Equestria and a disbelieving Twilight. Although, that's not necessarily the prompt you need to follow if writing is what you desire.

Thread Story List.

ince the tread is having trouble getting started, i guess it's time to post.
>You shiver at the recollection.
>since then, you managed to get a place to live, but you never forgot her warning.
“Look, i don't know how you got ahold of my invention, but I can’t help you, if that was what you were going to ask.”
“And why not?”
>you start to make some bullshit excuse, but your brother’s words hit you like a steamroller
“Anon, when will you just grow a spine?”
>you hesitate.
Are you really going to do this?
“Ill help you.”
“Great! Let's get started!
>You follow him into the next room, ready to show him the power of technology
>>
>2 months later.
“EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT! HOW TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM THE NIGHT MENACE THAT COULD BE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!”
>you’ve grown sick of hearing about this “night menace”.
>I mean, it’s been what, a month since the missing pony crisis?
>and they still keep talking about it.
>nevermind, it’s not important right now.
>it’s been two weeks since you started working with whooves
>at first, progress was pretty slow.
>despite what you originally thought, The Doc still had some reservations about your ideas.
>but after a few experiments, he came around.
>eventually, you make it over to his house.
*knock knock*
>>
“In a sec anon, i must to get dressed properly!”
>after a few seconds, he opens the door.
>looking down, you see him dressed up in a brown overcoat, a white undershirt, and a small red bowtie.
“Goodness anon, how do you manage to do this EVERY DAY?”
>you shrug, nonchalantly.
“Practice, i guess.”
“Well, we must get going. Don’t want to be late for the big reveal!”
>you nod, heading out the door with the eccentric inventor in tow.

PONYVILLE: MAIN SQUARE.
>twilight trotted merrily through ponyville
>the breeze in the air, the feel of the stone path, the smell of fresh apples wafting through the air.
>nothing, she decided, could ruin this day.
“COME ONE, COME ALL! AND SEE THE POWER OF DOCTOR WHOOVES’S MUNDANE MARVELS!
>you stop
>to turned you head, seeing a small stage set up in the center of ponyville.
>in the center, you can see a brown earth pony, and…
>wait.
>you rush over to the stage
>it’s anon, with that crazy doctor.
>whatever was happening you knew it couldn’t end well.
well, that it. sorry if its not very long. feedback is appreciated

This was the first sprouts of the item named
"Rain b.o.w"
A type of magical weapon akin to a "photon lazer" which seems to be hyper consentrated light
The rain bow is the first of many element-level weapons used by anonymous Sr. In the past war
These weapons have been dismantled but many of the components used are indestructible because of magical hardening caused by extreme levels of magic seen only once before during the t-d incident

In the story science is viewed as something like palm reading in that it couldn't explain something as fundamental as magic and thus never caught and was viewed as fake while magic flourished instead. So Twilight in the story is more someone who would rather have RD focus her intellectual efforts towards something "real"

Chapter 11: In which Portgate-Anon actually manages to write and do a proper read-over of the shit he wrote

> Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.
-Benjamin Franklin

-Pinkie Pie-
>"Ohhhhh...but...what if they're in trouble? Heavens knows what horrible, ghastly creatures there are in the Everfree! I won't be able to live with myself if any of them were...were...!"
>"I don't think you have to worry about that, Rarity. As long as they're gentle and respectful, they won't have to fear the animals in the forest."
>"But what about the cockatrices? Or the dreadful manticores?"
>"Well..."
>"They could even be attacked by a roving pack of timberwolves! Oh, the sight! Twilight and Applejack and Rainbow Dash, all getting mauled and torn to pieces by those beasts and their terrifying jaws..."
>"I...guess..."
>"Oh come on, Rarity, calm down! They're fiiiiiine!"
>"They are not!", Rarity yelled, temporarily dropping her ladylike manner in a flash of anxiety. Sugarcube Corner's dozen or so midday customers suddenly turned towards the source of the piercing shout, ignoring their meals for a moment as they shot nasty looks at the ivory-white unicorn. The constant chatter instantly faded away into an awkward semi-silence, drawing more attention to Rarity with its emptiness. A nearby pegasus muttered something under his breath before turning back around and resuming his conversation, and nobody doubted it was something very rude. The dozen or so gazes were painfully uncomfortable, and Rarity nervously blushed as she buried her face in her vanilla cupcake.
>>
>>29759780

>"It's only been three days," Fluttershy replied. "Didn't they say that they would spend that much time in the woods? Plus, it's not easy to trek through the Everfree, you know that. We just have to give them some time, is all."
>"You're right. So," Pinkie Pie asked, "how is Spike doing, Rarity?"
>"Oh, he's so well behaved for such a young dragon! Such a gentlecolt. Although, I think he's a bit worried about Twilight (of course, why wouldn't he,) and her friends."
>"Hmm... I guess-"
>"Holy heck, Princess Luna is here!"
>There was a flurry of movement as curious ponies flocked outside, and the ear-grating noise of chairs scraping against the ground was the only thing audible for a brief second. As the mob flooded out the narrow doorway of the bakery, the three friends simply sat and watched through a window as a small mob of people formed around a tall, midnight-blue pony. Princess Luna was indeed there, walking through the thin crowd with an entourage of bat-ponies at her sides. Her glass slippers clopped along the stony cobbles with a tinkling sound, clearly distinct even above the mumbles and murmurs of the gathered spectators. It was truly an odd experience, watching an alicorn stride above the heads of her subjects - and at high noon, too! Luna wasn't completely unable to be out in the sun, but it was certainly a rare sight.
>"Why here, though? In the middle of the day, as well..." Rarity mumbled.
>>
>>29759786

>The answer came sooner than expected. It was hard to believe at first, but Luna was making a straight beeline for Sugarcube Corner. Each step she made brought her - and the crowd - closer and closer to the bakery until she was through the doors, her silhouette an imposing sight against the bright background of Ponyville's colorful streets. A pair of guards kept the outsiders at bay, blocking the entrance with their short halberds. She paused and looked around for a second, a calm and mystical air about her very being, before finally setting her eyes on the only other ponies in the room.
>"Hello there, ponies. Have you seen your friends around lately?"
>"Who, Twilight and the others? They went out on a trip into the Everfree forest three days ago," Fluttershy answered. >"There were strange noises coming from it a few days ago, and they went to go investigate. In fact, just two days ago, we heard a lot of sharp snaps...like from a whip!"
>Luna's poker face was a good one, but Pinkie could tell something bothered her about that statement. She was a master at reading the emotions of ponies, and for all of their power the Princesses were still no match for her natural instinct.
>"So my suspicions are well-founded. At least you three are here... Where can we get some privacy?"
>"Uh... we can head upstairs...?" Pinkie suggested.
>"That'll do just fine. Lead the way, Pinkie Pie."
>Pinkie Pie, followed by Luna, Rarity, and Fluttershy, walked past the bakery counter and display, up the stairs, and through the second door on the right. She held the teal-blue wooden door open for the three other ponies before locking it and grabbing a nearby stool.
>"That won't be necessary, Pinkie, I can sit on the floor. This is your bedroom, yes?"
>>
>>29759790

>"Uh-huh!" Pinkie responded. The cream-yellow walls and pastel-colored furniture gave the room a sense of happiness and warmth fitting for its cheerful occupant. Party supplies were stacked neatly in boxes around the room, and a closet door labeled "FOR SERIOUS PARTEES" suggested that there were a lot more stashed away. Though that day was hardly a special occasion, streamers and balloons festively decorated the walls and furniture.
>"We'll be safe enough. I understand that this might be a bit unexpected of me - you know, coming here without warning..."
>"It's fine, Princess Luna."
>"Just Luna, Pinkie. At least, in private. Anyways, I guess I owe you all an explanation. Where shall I start?"
>"At the beginning, please," Rarity answered. "Wherever that may be."
>"Hmm. I suppose it started approximately a week ago, when I was dreamwalking. You are familiar, right?"
>"Isn't that where you go into somepony's head while they're sleeping and look around inside their dreams?"
>"I'm more of an observer, Pinkie. It should have been like any other time, but...I found these odd-...distortions, shall I say..."
>"How so?"
>"There was a distinct lack of magic. An emptiness, for lack of a better word. I took a look at them, and they were... mystifying, to say the least. Let's just leave it at that," Luna sighed as she unfurled her wings. She couldn't tell them the truth; at least, not yet. How would they handle it?
>"So, is that why you're here?"
>"I...suppose so. I'm here on account of a development that occurred just a day ago..."

-Luna-
>Luna stopped for a minute to look at the dots in front of her, once again unsure of how to proceed. It was foolish of her to expect no changes, but the lack of mana had led her to imply otherwise. Plus, it couldn't be that silly to expect some kind of event, right?
>Where there had been only three colorless minds before her before, six now stood in the vast void of the dreamscape. The three new lights were definitely more vibrant, suggesting some sort of magical capacity in these new beings. She could feel the magic emanating from each of them like the radiant heat of a hot flame. Sometime in the past two days, a trio of magical entities had joined the magic-less ones in both mental - and physical - proximity. How and why were both mysteries to Luna, but she had a hunch as to where she would find the answer. One of the new beings was much, much more powerful than the others - in fact, it was likely one of the most powerful beings in all of Equestria at the moment, judging from its enormous magical emanation.
>Entering such a strong consciousness undetected was undoubtedly going to be a daunting task, but Luna knew what she was getting herself into. She had slipped through the mental blocks of similarly powerful beings, and this one would be no different. The familiar, cautious ease of her thoughts between the slips and cracks was routine to her, as it had been for centuries, and she was through in no time at all.
>>
>>29759816

>When she regained her focus, Luna found herself in a shabby and hastily erected room in an indistinguishable location. The wooden floor was cold and unpolished, and the walls and ceiling were made of a drab green canvas. It was defintely a tent of some sort, like the roomy ones the southern nomads lived in. Tubes hung from the roof at regular intervals, shining a pure white light on the furniture. Crates and boxes of all shapes and sizes were stacked alongside the far end of the tent, while several cots and mats lay on the ground opposite. Three small tables lined the other side, each of them with a metal folding chair at its side. The tops of them were covered with various artifacts of unknown make and purpose, but Luna could make out several pony-made tools and pieces of equipment. Everything was alien and foreign.
>The one recognizable thing she could see, however, was a very familiar purple alicorn sitting on the ground.
>"Twilight!"
>The lavender pony paid no attention to her surprised exclamation and continued to quietly sit over something. Luna quickly galloped over to Twilight and set herself down in front of her, intent on grabbing her notice.
>"Twilight! Can you hear me?"
>"..."
>"Twilight Sparkle, I need you to look at >me!"
"..."
>>
>>29759827

>Luna sighed as she watched her look over the papers in front of her. Twilight muttered as her violet eyes swept across the pages, clearly focused on the task at hand. She was in one of her study trances, and Luna remembered how it would be nearly impossible for her to snap out of it when she was truly entrenched in her studies. The only thing the Princess of the Night could do was read the sheafs of paper along with her...
>Twenty-six symbols at the top of a page, copied over and over down the evenly spaced, parallel lines, were the first thing to draw her attention. To the left of them, several three-columned tables with a drawing, its meaning in Equestrian, and a series of the symbols again in each row. It was clearly created to translate a language, which meant that the symbols were a sort of alphabet. Luna had seen the letters before in her previous sessions, but she had foolishly glossed over them in favor of the meanings given to them by the aliens. Now that she had looked at them from a pony's perspective, however, they were actually quite similar to a snippet of an ancient script she had stashed back in the Royal Library. It was crudely carved onto a slate, but it was still thousands of years old and rather poorly preserved. If only they had patched that section of the roof up properly...
>The corner of another paper, hidden beneath a list of grammatical rules, caught Luna's eye as she cursed herself for her past mistakes. She shifted the other papers aside with her hoof and pulled out the sheet of interest with her magic. It was an anatomical (if Twilight's artistic abilities could be called that) representation of...just what Luna was looking for.
>>
>>29759851

>They weren't all that different from minotaurs, if she was being totally honest. Similar torso, hands and arms that were exactly the same, both stood on their back legs... although the aliens had no hooves. Their faces were radically different from anything she had seen but still notably simian, and their leg-hands had stubbier fingers than the monkeys she had seen in the jungles of western Zebrica.
>Luna was excited. She had information on the aliens, their language... her dreamwalking had reaped a great reward, and coming to the most powerful mind turned out to be a great choice. Twilight-...
>Wait.
>This was Twilight's dream.
>It had to be. That huge magical potential was clearly hers.
>Which meant that she had seen the aliens. And if her speck was close to the aliens...
>What was Twilight doing there?
>>
>>29759857

-Rarity-
>"Oh dear... Will they be okay?" Rarity asked Luna.
>She was right to be worried. Luna had just told them what was going on in the Everfree: several dangerous anomalies had materialized, and it was up to her and her Night Guard to take care of it. Twilight, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack were all in the forest, and they were in deep trouble if what Luna said was correct. The princess paused for a second, clearly hesitant to answer.
>"Yes. We will do all we can to protect her, and I assure you that your friend will be unharmed. She's an alicorn, she can handle whatever the Everfree throws at her."
>"Oh, thank goodness! I was worried for a while."
>"I'm glad to hear they'll be safe, Princess Luna."
>"Likewise, Fluttershy." Luna eased herself up from her sitting position with those two words, then slowly walked over to the single window in Pinkie's room. She stared out into the front of the bakery, watching her Night Guard as they stood at attention in front of the doors. The crowd that had gathered just a few minutes ago had largely dispersed, and the previously excited ponies had returned to their daily errands.
>"Pinkie," Luna asked as she pulled herself back from the windowsill, "in a couple of short hours we will be leaving for the Everfree. We'll set up a stockpile right outside of the forest by dusk. By then, we'll be inside of it. I don't need to tell you the Everfree's a big place; even with our current forces, we'll take a couple of days to fully comb the trees. Two or three, I'd wager."
>"Okie-dokie! Good luck!"
>"Good luck," said Fluttershy.
>"I wish you the safest of travels, Princess Luna."
>"Thank you three for your blessings. I'm sure we'll all need them in the coming days."
>With that, Luna pushed open the bedroom door and stepped out, closing it behind her. The trio of friends stayed to discuss what she had told them, oblivious to the reality of the situation at hand.

-William-

>The sprawl of black text on white paper brought stirring memories back to the aged director, of a time where things were much simpler and...manageable. It had only been twenty-something years since he was a junior scientist himself, excitedly working away at his physics experiments with a youthful energy. The papers once spoke to him of a world of discovery, a world of brand new possibilities...
>Now?
>He sure did find his discovery - a whole two inches of it, sitting on his desk.
>From what he had managed to scrape together of the tens of different reports, apparently there was some sort of feedback from the Portgate. It had started two days ago, with the surge of energy that the sensors picked up. Ever since that spike, the energy readings had been two hundred times higher than before. It wasn't a big increase in terms of the big picture, but explaining it to the suits without them panicking was going to be a doozy. Big-wigs always managed to misinterpret scientific data. Nobody knew how; they just did.
>William frowned at the tablet in his hand as its screen lit up with a reminder. "4:56 minutes to LEADER MEATING", right beneath "3:55" and above "andersonWilliam logged in". He didn't care that the meeting was five minutes away, or that he had misspelled "meeting"; he was in a state of exasperated exhaustion that just barely left him enough energy to slog through the absolute mess that was the Portgate incident. Some of the staff had been referring to the Portgate as the "Ring of Death", which was acually a very apt description of William's situation.
>>
>>29759873

>The alarm surprised William, rousing him from his microsleep-induced trance as several papers fell off his desk. He anxiously grabbed the tablet before turning the alarm off and scurrying to make himself look presentable. It only took William fifteen seconds to un-wrinkle his collared shirt out, ten to sort the papers on his desk, and another five to accept the already incoming video call.
>"Greetings, Director."
>Twenty-four faces covered the screens in front of William, each one the head of one of the twenty-four nations investing their resources in the project. Each one was staring at him and his grubby mug.
>"Hello. I, uh, suppose you're here for the briefing, right?"
>"What do you think? Ever since we learned you've cut repair times in half, we've been ready to hear straight from the horse's mouth!"
>"Actually, that was more of a-"
>"So! Any news?"
>"Well...not much. Work is still continuing on the Portgate, and we'll be done by fifty-two days, give or take a week or two. Not precise, I know, but it's the best we have. Oh and...and, uh..."
>"And what?"
>How was he going to say this?
>"There's, um...we've had a development recently. We're receiving, uh... feedback from the Portgate's sensors."
>>
>>29759879

>"What kind?"
>"It's, uh... energy."
>The murmurs of the world's most powerful men and women freed up a couple of minutes for William to cringe at his poor choice of words.
>"...potential security risk. What else?"
>"Um...t-the readings first spiked up just two days ago. and since then...they've stayed up, though just a little bit more than before. And they're...noticeably more regular than before. We're getting a steady rhythm of energy pulses, ranging from about 110 to 130 beats per minute."
>More discussion, more regret.
>"We can't just be unprepared if the time comes. Anderson, we want more security around the Portgate. I'm sure you won't need it, but just in case... we're expecting a doubling, at the very least."
>"I...alright."
>"We don't know what caused that, but we want to err on the side of caution if it does turn out to be potentially dangerous. If it's any consolation, we've managed to keep the media off your back so far...though we don't know how long we can keep it up."
>"Thank you."
>"That is all. Don't disappoint us, Anderson."
>>
>>29759879

>Within seconds, all of the faces had disappeared off the now dark screen. William held his head in his hands, aggrieved by the thought of more people around the already-crowded Portgate. They would just be an obstacle to the repair process.
>"Assistant?"
>A shifting bundle of concentric circles popped up on the tablet's screen."Yes, Anderson?"
>"When are the inspectors due?"
>"Tomorrow, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM."
>"Ugh...in the Portgate area?"
>"South Wing Scheduled Time of Inspection: 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM."
>Embezzlement of the entire project's funding wouldn't make up for the headaches, William thought as he shuffled the papers around on his desk. He poured out his fifth Aspirin of the day into his hand, swallowed it dry, and began the arduous task of ordering the stationing of a whole platoon of soldiers halfway across the facility in twenty-three hours. If anything, he would at least be sharing his troubles with the security head of the Bunker.
>Suffering, it is said, finds relief in company, but William was feeling everything but relief that moment.

I'm sure I've asked this before, but are you guys finding any issues with my writing style? I can't put my finger on it, but something seems off about my chapters and I don't know what it is. Either way, give me your questions, comments, suggestions, and critiques!

Sorry for the delay. Got sidetracked.

>It's perfect.

>You gather some sizable rocks from the beach and make a crude fire pit.
>Taking off your backpack, you wrestle with the tent that Twiddles had packed.
>Shes nothing if not through.
>Setting up camp was a piece of cake, and a fire was quickly lit.
>You cook up some veggies into a stirfry devour the meal.

"What happened? Where's the water?"
"I saw you struggling with your nightmare, so I put an end to it. For tonight at least."
>Concern was painted across her face
"Whats the matter? I was the one with the nightmare."
>She looks away from you a bit and opens her mouth
"Your dreams are... unique. The intensity of your nightmare made it difficult for even me to halt. Dreams of this kind would drive a pony to the brink of insanity."
"That's... kinda depressing actually. Is it that bad?"
"Well for a start, what was that beast that was stalking you? I've never seen such a thing. I know of whales, but that was no whale."
"That is because it is not from around here. Back in my world they are actually human creations. They are machines capable of carrying a surface dweller deep into the bowels of the ocean. They are called submarines and they have been used for everything from war to exploration."
>Luna's face now turned to a look of confusion
"T-that doesn't sound nearly as bad as your dream made it out to be. How can such a novel creation cause so much fear?"
"I don't have the answers either, Luna. Its just a deeply embedded fear of mine."
"Ah... Ok. Well morning will be arriving shortly so I must be off."
>She turns and opens a tear out of your mind
"BEFORE you go, can you let Twilight know that I have arrived to my new home? Let her know I'm setting down my roots, and that I'm safe. If she wonders where I am have her ask Rainbow Dash."
"I'll be sure to let the princess know. Stay well, Anon."

>It's a shame there wasn't any syrup in the pack.
>You've only been awake for a bit and you already have a list.
>Build a cabin.
>Find some maple trees.
>Fish.
>Well one of these takes priority, and is the sole reason you hauled all this crap with you in the first place.
>But fishing sounds so good.
>No Anon. Fish later, cabin now.
>Logs shouldn't be in low supply, as you happened to walk through a literal forest of them.
>Getting the logs over here will prove to be a problem.
>That cart is looking very attractive right now.
>Leaving everything but the axe and the cart back at camp, you walk towards the forest.
>It isn't very far.
>The pine trees would be the best option for house lumber, being mostly straight and what not.
>The entire day is spent chopping and hauling the logs over to the plot.
>Going to bed tired and sticky has never been so manly.
>>
>>29765512
>The next morning, you pull out that adze you got at the store and go at the logs to make them fit nicely with each other.
>All the pieces are ready for the walls to be put up, so its time to build up the foundation.
>That cart is proving to be really useful.
>The rocks were heavy, but like with the logs, there wasn't much in the way of distance between the beach and your plot.
>A square hole about a foot and a half deep had already been dug, and you start to just dump the rocks into it.
>This should hopefully provide a sturdy base onto which to anchor and lay the logs.
>A small fireplace is laid down as well, with the chimney leading away from the house.
>Some limestone would have been nice to have though, concrete would have been way better.
>As you finish filling and compacting the hole as much as you can, darkness falls yet again.
>Waking up early, you set to work on the walls.
>One log at a time, the sides of the cabin take form.
>By noon, the cabin is left only without a roof.
>What a bitch that is going to be.

>A few hours and copious amounts of swearing later, your cabin has a roof and is now a proper house.
>The door and windows may only be tarp right now, but this is a home.
>Your home.
>You go inside and stoke the fireplace, and set your sleeping bag on the floor.
>Oh yeah, rock floor.
>A Proper bed is next on the list, but not tonight.
>For now, you enjoy the concept of having a roof again.
>Twilight is going to regret betting against you.

To absolutely nobody’s surprise, this project is already growing out of control. I’ve seven documents just for keeping track of what’s going on behind the scenes. The risk of burnout is extremely high. And so, I come to you with a proposal.
One of the biggest drags when writing Steel Sanctuary was that I always knew what was coming next. When I’d sit down to write I was covering ground that I’d already spent time thinking about months ago. There were no surprises, and nothing to keep me interested. With Red Shift, there may be a way around this.
There are many highly suspicious things happening in this setting that are worth investigation, and a few not so suspicious things that are even more worthy of investigation.
Furthermore, there may be suspicious things that turn out to be completely meaningless. From this point forward I intend to have Lyra take notice of the things you mention as being out of place. Within reason of course. Last time somebody mentioned that it was strange that Lyra didn’t know what guns were. She can’t know that that’s strange since she lacks key knowledge. Likewise she won’t take notice of ideas that come from thin air. Somebody proposed that the secret was that Celestia had anon in a dungeon and was trading science for horse pussy. While this is absolutely, definitely true, she has no reason to suspect this. However, if somebody points out something that Lyra might reasonably find unusual, I'll try to make her look into it in the next one. Just to keep things more interesting for me.

No, this is not going full blown CYOA. There is a story I want to tell with pre-planned plot points. Anything that would threaten these things is likely to be discarded. What it is is keeping me on my toes and prompting me to explore certain things in a different order than I might otherwise have chosen. And if you’re not interested, I’ll still keep writing. I just won't enjoy it as much.

>Life had more or less returned to normal for Lyra.
>The past few weeks had been tense at first.
>But as it slowly set in that they didn’t know who’d broken into that weird place, she allowed herself to relax.
>Relax, but not forget.
>She couldn’t forget.
>Whatever all that junk was was right beneath her hooves.
>There was at least twenty meters of dirt between the two of them, but that did little to put her mind at ease.
>What was it?
>Where did it come from?
>Was it dangerous?

>”Lyra! Are you done washing the sheets?”

“Workin’ on it!”

>The not weird machine before her was far less unnerving.
>Indeed, Lyra had seen many ‘washing machines’ before.
>A few years ago they were only found in public laundries, but these days everpony could afford one.
>Lyra stared at the painted metal box before her.
>Inside was bedding.
>Freshly washed, stains removed.
>She put soap in, water came from… SOMEWHERE, and it washed them for her.
>How did it work?
>And far more importantly, where did it come from?
>It was so unlike anything from her foalhood.
>A machine that replaced pony labor, found in an average household.
>When had such strange things become normal?
>It just happened so gradually she hadn’t even noticed.
>But things had changed.
>The blinkers had come off her tack and she could see.
>She just wasn’t sure what it was she was seeing.
>Not yet.
>She levitated the wet linens out of the machine and moved them into the dryer.
>Another weird device.
>Another thing she’d never thought to question.
>The inside bits started spinning and heating.
>Lyra took one last suspicious look at the machines before walking away.
>It’s not that she didn’t trust it.
>It seemed safe enough.
>Nor did she want it gone.
>That device had saved her a great deal of time in the past, and was likely to continue to do so in the future.
>>
>>29796096
>She just wasn’t sure where it came from.
>Lyra left the kitchen to find Bon-Bon sitting in the kitchen writing something.
>The earth pony before her carefully dragged her quill across the page with her mouth, leaving no ink.
>Lyra was tempted to ask what she was writing.
>But she knew better than to put her friend in that awkward position.
>Pushing for secret information wouldn’t end well.
>At best, Bon-Bon would be forced to lie.
>Things would have been so simple for Lyra were this not the case.
>She knew a pony who had insider knowledge.
> She likely didn’t have the exact information Lyra sought, but she surely knew something useful.
>But she couldn’t just ask her friend to betray the trust Equestria had placed in them.
>Even if it seemed like Equestria might not be worthy of that loyalty.
>On the other hoof, though, Lyra had nothing to work with.
>No leads except the bunker.
>No clues except that weird symbol.

“Is it safe to talk?”

>Bon-Bon nodded curtly.
>If Lyra didn’t know her so well she’d think she was upset with.
>But the fact is that she just under a lot of stress.
>The recent break-in has her working overtime every night.
>Lyra couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty about that.
>But she wasn’t ready to quit digging.

“Have you caught the bad pony yet?”

>”They vanished without a trace. Whoever it was, they’re really good at what they do.”

“R-really?”

>”Yeah. They hit at the exact right moment. Guards were changing shifts, rear entrance was open for delivery, there was a false alarm at the other end of the facility to distract them… They had SECONDS to move and they nailed it. This must have taken months of planning.”

>Or insane amounts of luck.

“What did they do?”

>”Classified.”

“Oh. Sorry. I shouldn’t have asked.”

>”That’s not it. I don’t know what happened. It’s above my clearance level. Say… why do you ask?”

“I might be a teensy bit scared.”
>>
>>29796099
>It wasn’t a lie.
>Lyra was worried.
>The gory sight she’d seen underground had her worried.
>Bon-Bon said nothing.

“Isn’t this the part where you tell me not to worry and everything will be fine?”

>”I don’t like lying to you.”

>So cryptic.
>So calm in the face of danger.
>So cool!
>At least she was in Lyra’s eyes.
>Bon-Bon folded up the letter she’d been writing and places it in an envelope.

>”All done for the night. Wanna head out for a bit?”

Later…

>The night wound up taking them to Ponyville’s brand new indoor theater.
>It was another sweltering day in Ponyville and the citizens were glad to finally be free from the confines of their homes.
>Lyra was no exception.
>She couldn’t for the life of her figure out why the weather patrol wouldn’t move at least a couple clouds up to cool things off.
>But for whatever reason it was nothing but clear skies all week long.

>”So, what are you showing tonight?”

>Bon-Bon inquired of the attendant.

>”God Lizard. A terrifying tale of a giant, monstrous dragon destroying a city.”

“Why would we pay to watch that? That happened here just a couple years ago.”

>”R-really?”

>”There’s nothing special about monsters destroying cities. What’s next, a film about swarms of bug monsters eating everything? Ancient evil spirits reshaping the world into a madmare’s fever dream? Shapeshifters replacing loved ones? Demonic invasion from Tartarus? It’s just another day in Ponyville.”

>”You made that last one up!”

>You’re not entirely sure she did.
>Stuff HAS escaped Tartarus before.
>Not demons as far as you know.
>Who knows what the public never hears about?

“Say-”

>Lyra began to ask her friend what the scariest monster she’d ever seen was.
>Somepony who worked in the monster location unit must have seen some of the worst the world had to offer.
>>
>>29796103
>The biggest, ugliest fiends ever to be banished to Tartarus.
>Doubtlessly it’d make an exciting film for everypony not in the know.
>But sadly, she couldn’t share her knowledge.

>”Say what?”

“Uhh- how does the film work? How do you make the moving pictures and sounds?”

>”I dunno.”

>Lyra was disappointed to hear that news.
>Disappointed, but not surprised.
>It seems like nopony knows how any of this new stuff works.
>And for some reason, nopony seemed to care.

“And you’ve never tried to find out? You’re okay with having no idea how the world around you works? Have you no curiosity? Are-”

>”What is WRONG with you?”

>Bon-Bon angrily yelled out of nowhere.

>”You call THAT candy floss? It’s an abomination!”

>Lyra turned to look at the confection stand.
>And Bon-Bon was angrily gesturing at a small plastic tub of spun sugar.

“It’s all right, Bonny. Calm down.”

>”No! Candy floss is supposed to be light and fluffy! This is practically rock candy!”

>“How do you know? You haven’t eaten any.”

>”I don’t need to. Just look at it! I bet this was made days ago.”

>Lyra grabbed the enraged pony and started dragging them away.
>The pair attracted little attention as they walked through Ponyville’s crowded roads
>The asphalt beneath their hooves still felt uncomfortably warm from the blazing sun.
>Lyra pushed her way out of the heart of the city towards what remained of the countryside.
>At some point Bon-Bon took charge and changed course towards the woods.
>Lyra didn’t object.
>She didn’t really care where they went at this point.
>Just so long as they went somewhere quiet.
>They soon found themselves lying on the dry, wilted grass and staring up to the heavens.
>The night sky wasn’t as striking as it used to be.
>The light from Ponyville washed out the fainter stars.
>Even the bright ones seemed comparably dull.
>Lyra had never been much of a stargazer, but even so it felt…
>Wrong.
>>
>>29796110
>Living in Ponyville as it was now was such a far cry from the Ponyville she knew.
>The city kept growing and changing.
>More ponies, more buildings, more gadgets...
>It almost felt like a whole different world.
>And the missing night sky, well, that was just one more thing she’d lost without even noticing.
>Life WAS better these days, of this she had no doubt.
>But there were things she missed.
>Things she feared she might never enjoy again.
>The starry night was gone forever.
>Quiet solitude in the park was no longer an option.
>No matter where she went she was surrounded by strange ponies with odd backgrounds.
>And there was just so much noise all the time!
>Ponyville had changed, it had moved onward at a blinding pace.
>And it left Lyra behind.

>”Sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

>”Not really. I made an ass of myself there.”

“Racism aside, what was the problem?”

>”It’s just… It wasn’t about the candy. Okay, it was. It wasn’t JUST about the candy. Everypony loves monster movies, loves seeing them wreck stuff. They don’t know how terrible it can be. And everypony idolizes mockeries of me and what I do.”

>The monster movie had her upset?

>”Nopony knows what I can do or what I have to deal with. Everypony just thinks of me as that mare that eats too much sugar.”

>Lyra would be lying if she said she hadn’t heard that from time to time.
>Some of her friends would even go so far as to ask why Lyra was interested in her companion.

>”Even you.”

>Oh.

“I don’t like Double O Zero. I like you. I just wish I was allowed to know everything about you.”

>Lyra cuddled up closer to her favourite pony beneath the hollow night sky.
>There was at least one thing in her life that hadn’t changed.
>Her feelings for Bonny hadn’t faded.
>If anything they’d grown in recent history.
>Lyra knew for a fact she could trust the mare beside her.
>She was safe when she was around Bon-Bon, and-

>”This was a huge mistake.”
>>
>>29796115
“Pardon?”

>”I brought you here because I wanted to show off. To impress you. But it was a stupid thing to do. You need to hide. Right now.”

>Bon-Bon lept to her hooves in one swift motion and stared up at the sky.
>She gestured off towards the nearby woods without taking her eyes off of…
>A small bird flying off in the distance?

“What’s wrong?”

>”You have five minutes before it gets here. Hide.”

“Uhh. Okay?”

>Lyra reluctantly moved off to hide among the trees.
>She couldn’t figure out what the problem was as the bird drew closer.
>And closer.
>And kept getting closer for several minutes.

*KRAAAAA*

>A vicious gale threatened to knock her over as it passed by overhead.
>She poked her muzzle around the side of the tree to see a massive hawk with a scaled head.
>It opened its beak to bare vicious rows of fangs.
>The once tiny bird she’d seen must have been several kilometers away as it now dwarfed the tallest buildings.
>Bon-Bon stood before it.
>Unflinching.
>Unwavering.
>She reached into her saddlebags and produced a small black ball.
>And the bird turned away from her and started to stomp towards Ponyville.

“Hey, Roc! Get ready to drop like a stone!”

>Lyra grinned like a madmare at the cheesy one-liner before the reality of the situation sank in.
>Sweetie Drops hurled the ball at its eyes speed.
>A sickly yellow cloud erupted at the site of impact.
>And the bird was PISSED.
>It turned towards the offending pony and started pecking wildly.

“Bonny, get out of there!”

>No answer.
>Lyra watched as hundreds of tonnes of predatory muscle bore down on her Bonny.
>On her whole world.
>She was going to DIE out there!
>Lyra had to do SOMETHING!
>ANYTHING!
>She tried to reach out to her magic.
>The fear and panic ruined her concentration, but she dug deep and pulled out what she could manage.
>A simple flame spell splashed against the bird and singed a few feather.
>It didn’t seem to notice.
>>
>>29796123
>She levitated a nearby stone and repeatedly bashed it into the monster’s face.
>Until the Roc ate the rock, reducing it to dust with one vicious bite.
>Lyra watched helplessly as the best pony in the world ran and rolled about, narrowly evading doom with each missed blow.
>There was nothing she could do.
>She was useless.
>Helpless.
>Her magic was failing her yet again.
>She groped at its neck with a telekinetic field trying desperately to slow it down.
>To choke it out.
>To do something!
>Nothing.
>But she needed to help!
>She couldn’t just sit by idly and watch!

“Hold on Bonny.”

>She still had one trick left.
>Lyra might not have been great at evocation or illusions.
>But she she did know some conjuration.
>Sweat poured from her head as she focused.
>Her head burned with each rapid heartbeat as the pressure behind her eyes grew ever more.
>And with a flash of light, an anvil materialised above the bird’s head.
>It hit home.
>Hard.
>And then slipped on the side and buried itself in the ground before vanishing back into the ether.
>It turned to look at Lyra with murder in its eyes.
>And Lyra was paralyzed by exhaustion and fear.

>”I’m not done with you yet!”

>Sweetie Drops raised a dark tube up at its head.
>A grappling hook shot out and coiled around the fiend’s neck.
>It retracted on its own pulling the agent upwards at blinding speeds.
>Special agent Sweetie Drops released the hook halfway through her ascent and flew straight onto the beast’s breast.
>Lyra saw a blinding flash of mana for just an instant before impact.
>When she could see clearly again, the Roc was rapidly rolling through the woods leaving trail of destruction in its wake.
>Fresh soil flew about as it plowed through the ground face first.
>It recovered far too quickly.
>But when it rose, one wing dangled by its side.
>Broken.
>That wing was now useless.

“Just like me.”
>>
>>29796127
>Sweetie Drops casually walked up to the monster.
>And to Lyra’s surprise, it backed away.
>Just a little bit.
>But it never quite ran.
>Instead it pecked down one last time when Sweetie Drops approached.
>Her hoof rose.
>Another flash of light.
>The Roc snapped backwards and collapsed.

“Is- is it safe?”

>”Yup!”

>Lyra stepped out of the bushes and cautiously approached the beast.
>It still seemed to be breathing.
>But Bon-Bon didn’t seem concerned.

“That. Was. AWESOME!”

>”We best get out of here before too many prying eyes show up.”

“Wait, you’re just going to leave it there?”

>”A reclamation team is already on the way. Locking them up isn’t my job.”

“So you just beat them up and leave?”

>”No. They usually leave that to the fighters. I’m just supposed to find them. I maaaaaay have neglected to inform them about this so that I’d have a chance at it?”

>Bon-Bon started to walk away from the scene.

>”I’m going to have to have to go report on this. They aren’t going to be happy that it got so close. Stupid!”

>And she disappeared into the night.
>Lyra didn’t answer, instead choosing to survey the destruction.
>How could one kick have been so devastating?
>With one last look she spotted something strange.
>The Roc had an ear tag on it.
>She couldn’t quite read it though.
>Lyra was tempted to get a closer look.
>But far more tempted to be far away, and fast.
>She soon found herself walking past the post office.
>And also the bunker.
>And near the rear entrance was none other than Twilight Sparkle and her assistant.
>She watched quietly as they stepped inside.
>Lyra stood dumbfounded for a moment.
>Twilight Sparkle, a pony she’d known for years, was in the know.
>She had an angle to work with.
>But then…
>She and Twilight hadn’t spoken for years.
>Neither had really made any move to get back together despite living in the same town.
>>
>Truth be told, Lyra was never fond of Twilight, and she was pretty sure the feeling was mutual.
>It was more that they had mutual acquaintances than anything.
>What good would confronting the purple pony princess do?
>Best case it would raise suspicion.
>No, Lyra knew she wasn’t getting anything out of Twilight.
>However…

Later that evening.

>Lyra stood before the crystal tree shaped palace thingey adorned in all black.
>She didn’t know what she was looking for.
>But she knew Twilight was out.
>And she also knew that just asking around wouldn’t do her any good.
>If she was going to get to the bottom of all this stuff, she had to do it the Sweetie Drops way.
>Which, Lyra naively assumed, meant going in through the front door.
>Was she really going to do this?
>Was she going to break into somepony’s home on her quest for truth?
>Was she ready to become a criminal just so she could know more?

“Totally!”

>It swung open without resistance.
>Lyra quietly mused to herself that it was strange.
>Why wouldn’t the princess of all ponies lock their door on the way out?
>Sure, nopony locked their doors a few years back.
>But in the new Ponyville you could never be too sure.
>Everypony locked their doors when they left their homes empty.
>And why were all the lights on in the foyer?
>She quickly flicked the lights off with her magic as she prowled through the building.
>Nothing seemed particularly out of order at first blush.
>Save for the opulence and size it seemed like any other home.
>With all the lights on.
>And none of the doors locked.
>Lyra popped another door open to see a pony sitting quietly in a reading room.
>She nearly slammed the door in panic, but barely managed to stop herself in time.
>Instead she quietly stepped away.
>’Wasn’t that that cultist pony?’ she thought to herself.
>Indeed, it looked quite a bit like Starlight Glimmer.
>Since when was she living with Twilight?
>Does SHE know what’s going on?
>>
>>29796143
>Lyra backed away slowly, not daring to close the door fully lest she make a noise.
>Whatever the case may be with Starlight, there was nothing to be gained from being seen.
>Lyra considered leaving.
>But her curiosity got the best of her and she moved on.
>Nothing suspicious in the grand hall or washroom.
>Nor in the throneroom.
>Next was the bedroom.
>As a very embarassed Lyra returned a box under Twilight’s bed, she noticed something.
>A weak arcane signature coming from the wall.
>A less gifted unicorn would have totally missed it.
>But Lyra was no ordinary unicorn.
>She was trained at Princess Celestia’s school.
>Lyra lacked power, but did not want for finesse.
>She moved up to it.
>Put her hoof up to the wall.
>And nearly fell through the illusion.
>On the other side was a small cramped office with a tiny stack of papers set off to the side.
>But in the middle of it all was a green glowing box.
>Something felt wrong about the box, almost as though it it didn’t belong in this world.
>It had an otherworldly glow about it as though it wasn’t intended for pony eyes.
>Lyra strained her eyes to look at it.
>Upon it was written a strange combination of symbols.

A:\ART\AL3>037.txt

Object class: safe

Access: Need To Know

037 is an extremely powerful tool with greater mathematical capacity than the entirety of ponykind.
Our best attempts are yet insufficient with all completed objects performing below expected parameters. However, it is our belief that they will save time in the long run by allowing us to process data at previously unimaginable rates. The underlying mechanism that allows 037 to function is ill understood (see 037-AD5.txt) and could use more inspection. Proposing further funding (see 037-PR12.txt)

Though there does not appear to be any risk in doing so, AL0 has insisted that 037 not be declassified at this time.

>That was it.
>Lyra had caught them red hoofed.
>She had no idea what was going on, but it was still a huge breakthrough.
>There were multiple ponies working with mysterious machines and hiding them from the public.
>And at least one princess was in on it.
>She had done it.
>She had actually managed to do spy stuff!
>She had just been recorded on camera.
>Lyra only then noticed the camera sitting above the entryway pointed down on her.
>Luckily for her she’d had the foresight to hide her identifying features.
>But even so this complicated things.
>She could leave and they’d have footage of her snooping around.
>Or she could destroy it and they’d have evidence of an intruder.
>They were going to know that they’d been found out, one way or another.
>It didn’t take her long to decide on her course of action.
>She crushed the machine in her telekinetic grip.
>Lyra wanted to stay longer.
>She wanted to snoop around.
>What would Double O Zero do?
>Stick around until she knew everything, get caught, wind up in some absurd death trap, and then escape in an equally absurd manner.
>What would Sweetie Drops do?
>She didn’t know.
>It was too late to slip out without a trace.

That's it.
We're starting to get into it.
One of my problems with Steel Sanctuary was that the opening was way too short and I just jumped into the action. I think I may have made the opposite mistake this time and took too long to get into it.

And sorry that it's going so slow. As I said, several documents keeping track of what's happening off screen. I probably should have gotten that all done before starting, but it's too late for that now.
>>
>>29796171
I think the opening's pace is fine. It's a spy story, it being tense and mysterious is a key part of the experience.
>>
>>29796171
Hi ho. Does anyone want me to post the cipher or should I just post the decrypted text? I'm noone important, I just really like the story.
>>
>>29796171
>several documents keeping track of what's happening off screen
You may or may not take your work a bit too seriously.
Not that I'm complaining or anything. Stuff's good.
>>
>>29797128
Go make a pastebin with the text and link it here.
>>
>>29797128
I d think it d better to not post the decryption at all, maybe include clues for it and after anons ITT decrypted then show it, either on green or separate paste
That or put the decryption keys on paste, with encrypted and decrypted files, still at least give some time for Anons to work it out unless Lyra herself decripts it

Makes me think
Do you think ponies have discovered calculus? If not, what do you think Twilight would think of it

>Anon, this seems neat, but why would you ever need something like this
>pic related
>>
>>29797279
>>29797798
The paste is already up. It contains the decryption and the programme for decrypting it.

It took me an embarrassing 50 min to write the programme.

So should I post the link or not?
>>
>>29797878
Yes. I'd love to see what is going on without wasting my time doing the same thing you did.
>>
>>29797878
You actually wrote a program to crack it? I'm more than flattered.
I've no objections to you posting it. Lyra will be taking a look at it sooner or later, but if I didn't want you to be able to read it I'd have used a better cipher.

>>29797265
That's just my autism at play. In Steel Sanctuary I wound up having to refer to my own paste several times for reference to keep the story straight. With this one half the story is happening off screen so that's not an option. I'm sure I could improvise all that as it comes up with only minor problems, but again.
Autism.

Oh no, the programme doesn't crack it. I cracked it after 30sec looking at the text. The programme just takes in the key and translates. It can also be used to encrypt in theory. I just couldn't be bothered to do the busy work.
Although you do deserve the flattery.

Also, pic related is the cypher I whipped up while bored in English class.

Looks like some of decoded text got cut off a bit.

>>29798258
It's not the decoding, he wrote it that way
>>
>>29798276
Nope. It appears to be a rather simple substitution cipher, so the before and after should have the same number of characters (except punctuation). The second one is 254 characters instead of 348 and the third is 255 instead of 441.
Still, thanks for doing this. We found at least one interesting thing in there already.
>>
>>29798359
I'm confused. The last letters just aren't there. I checked

you raise an excellent point. our budget is strained as it is and we won't be able to release this to the public any time soon. however, we will wind up spending more in the long run if we don't do it right the first time. the advanced lines are excessive for what we've planned for the coming months, but we will be wanting them in the years to come. al0

i have serious concerns regarding security at our facilities. we had that intruder at facility 37 just last week who got away, the intruder in at facility 12 who still won't talk, and there appears to be at least one leak at facility 63. we can not afford to allow facilities 000 through 004 to be compromised, else there will be no chance of success. i propose we equip all guards with art-54 and art-97 immediately. may the stars forgive me. al1
>>
>>29798199
Just curious by why go through the effort of making our own program to decode a caesar cipher instead of just doing a quick search to find a website that's already has one?
>>
>>29800363
Well, I already showed what I made while bored in English class
>>29798199
So that's just a few steps away from makeing a programme. I don't know anything about Cryptology, so I didn't know it had a name so I couldn't be bothered to Google it. When I realised how long it would take to do by hand I decided that it's a simple enough programme to make so I did. It was fun and searching on Google for something so simple is like googling a programme for counting up, it's just pointless. If you have the necessary experience, which in this case is next to none, why not just power through it?
>>
>>29800503
>why not just power through it?
It's faster and you don't have worry about potential bugs like how it doesn't write the letter a.
>>
>>
boop
>>
>>29803324
>>
>>29799570
So from this we can safely assume that they've only just begun. They're talking about things they'll want years later so the end is not yet in sight.

Also What's so important about 000 and 004? It seems like the others are that big of a deal compared to them, and the one Lyra found was 057. Meaning it wasn't an important one.
>>
>>29805085
Maybe 000 through 004 are where they keep the original source for their new tech?
>>
>>29805085
>>29805651
I'm guessing something like "The Manehattan Project" given the way they talk about it

>Twilight opened her eyes, yawning herself into strained wakefullness. A few minutes later she had a cup of coffee brewed and was slowly poring over the newest paper. For some reason her eyes seemed unfocused, but she attributed that to her still waking up. Taking a sip from her coffee, she immediately paused.
>"Why... does this taste like grape juice?" she asked, peering quizzically into the blackened depths contained with her porcelain mug.
>The remainder of her morning consisted of running tests on the abnormality, eventually finding out that about half of her foodstuffs and drinkable liquids had mysteriously just... started tasting like grape juice. To compound on this irregularity ( the idea that it could have been Discord was quickly discounted, on account of the fact that the only thing amiss was the taste of the objects in question, and not one article seemed to have developed sentience,) it appeared that Pinkie Pie was late to join Twilight for lunch like she had said she would.
>Well thats just wrong, Pinkie never breaks one of her promises. Never mind how inane any of them might be.
>Twilight exited the library, partaking a terrifying sight. Beyond the confines of her door... was nothing. Endless white, stretching on into infinity. The depthless insanity, staring back into her soul.
>Twilight slammed the door shut, her breath heavy in her throat as she started to hyperventilate. There was nothing out there. Nothing! How had she not noticed? Where had it all gone? How did she... manage to get the mornings paper... if there was nopony outside to deliver it...? Twilight swiveled her gaze, looking over at one of the libraries large windows. Outside of its pane, the town of Ponyville stretched forth, peaceful and as tranquil as always.
>A little too tranquil.

>That was impossible.
>Twilight felt the vestiges of a panic attack coming on, and viciously tamped down on her reaction. Panicking wouldn't help her. She had to think this through, she couldn't actually be all alone, there had to be an explanation for all of-
>Twilight picked up a chair, and tossed it as hard as she could at the window.
>The window shattered, glittering motes of light reflecting in neverending blackness. cracks spread from the walls, fracturing the floor and ceiling as Twilight fell backwards into the abyss. Scattered possessions fell with her, a book or two keeping her company as she screamed herself hoarse. Eventually all light faded, leaving her blind. Not even her screams to scare away the darkness.
>Twilight opened her eyes, yawning herself into strained wakefullness. Anon stood over her, a disapproving look stamped across his squashed muzzle. Or it could have just as easily been constipation. Humans were so hard to tell proper expressions from. Anon flicked her in the forehead, hard.
>"I told you not to mess with my stuff! The helmet aint ready to work with pony minds, you dumbass!"

>"That's weird, it usually works... Ha, guess I'll have to do it the earth pony way!" with that said he gets out of the chair and wobbles to the princesses
>he raises his hoof to smite the pathetic Euestria's defenders... and hits the shield they immediately threw down
>it was a barely noticeable tap on the magic barrier, the atrophy claimed his muscles and the strength of his blow, even Fluttershy posed a bigger threat now
>he yelled and threw insults at the trio, frail body shivering from the slow realization of his helplessness
>after some struggle and a lot of swearing, some of it from Anon, whose workshop was trashed by the crazy horse, the now relatively harmless ex-villain was shipped into local bedlam to repair the damage to his mind done by the virtual reality

Time for some green.

>On January 11, 1909, the Department of the Interior formally purchases 50 A-9 four-door sedans from AMC, at a cost of $42,500.
>They’re transported to an empty warehouse near the factory, where they can be modified.
>Over the next few weeks, the chassis are lifted and the cars’ underpinnings are raised in preparation for the unknown terrain they’ll soon explore.
>A small army of spare parts is slowly amassed, and the rear seats are taken out of every vehicle to hold their various cargo.
>The most exciting feature the explorers will be bringing with them is a new invention you’ve been dying to test out: wireless telegraphs.
>Two vehicles in each convoy will be equipped with the new technology, one with the transmitting equipment and one with the receiving equipment and operators’ workstations.
>A rudimentary portable antenna will be brought along in another one of the vehicles, to be taken out and assembled at sunset when the convoys stop for the day.
>At night, when the transmitters are most effective, messages can, hopefully, be sent back to Lancaster.
>All the technology is in its infancy, so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether or not you’re sending it all with them for nothing.
>But you’re optimistic.
>While the equipment is assembled, the recruitment process begins.
>Thousands of ponies, griffons, diamond dogs, zebras, and minotaurs all apply, and a team of government employees whittles the applicants down to the final hundred.
>They’re a team of strong-willed, experienced adventurers in their prime.
>It only takes a month to train them all.
>>
>>29825934
>In that time, you’ve started to get a little nervous.
>There’s no denying that this is a big step for Arcadia, and failure is not an option.
>Not only have the citizens of Arcadia already turned the explorers into national heroes, but it would be a national embarrassment.
>You’re not sure when the news will make it to the assortment of kingdoms across the ocean yet, but you do know that this is one of your first chances to prove yourself on a global scale.
>Obviously, building Lancaster without dying was one opportunity as well.
>So was constructing the tallest building in the world and being formally recognized by a global superpower, of course.
>But this is another opportunity to extend your influence and show the world what Arcadia can do.
>And you don’t want to mess it up.
>You’re preparing the explorers for the worst, because nobody has any idea what’s beyond the horizon.
>It could be calm and peaceful, filled with horrors never before seen by sentient eyes, or anywhere in between.
>Machetes may not be enough to stop what’s out there.
>You dug through your old drawings from when you first arrived in Equestria, and you didn’t find any record of what you were looking for.
>You never put the schematics for a rifle on paper, where they could be seen or stolen.
>But it may be what these convoys need to survive.
>>
>>29825943
>You’re well aware of the enormous capabilities of modern Earth weaponry, and you know that there’s no going back once you’ve started.
>And you’ve made it your mission to give Equus the technology that would improve countless lives while still staying far, far away from their destructive capabilities.
>When you left Dodge Junction and headed south for what would become Arcadia, way back in 1900, you crafted a rudimentary musket in total secrecy.
>Then, like now, nobody knew what was out there.
>But, as it turned out, the desert was devoid of hostile life, and you destroyed the weapon without ever firing a single shot.
>There’s no point in ruining the world’s innocence without a very good reason.
>Now though, you’re not willing to take a chance.
>You have the means to ensure the convoy’s total protection from almost anything the world could throw at them.
>So why not now?
>You extend the explorers’ training for a week to allow for advanced psychological screening and background checks to ensure that everyone’s who they say they are.
>You don’t want modern weaponry to fall into the wrong hands, hooves, talons, or paws.
>Just thinking of all the blood that could end up on your hands has kept you up for hours over the past week.
>Before the extensive evaluation starts, you assemble a team of the Arcadian Innovation Company’s most trusted geniuses in a small, well-hidden room in the bowels of the company’s headquarters.
>Having worked on other cutting-edge technology in the past, they all have the high-level security clearance that this project necessitates.
>They spend the better part of a week crafting prototypes and testing them in a long room adjacent to the one they’re working in.
>>
>>29825955
>In another week, a small factory is secured on the outskirts of Lancaster, and the 1909A rifle and 1909B pistol are assembled in total secrecy, along with enough ammunition to sustain the convoys.
>They’re a little unrefined, but they’re a massive leap forward compared to swords or bows and arrows.
>The weapons are all packed into crates and moved in the dead of night to the temporary training center just outside town.
>It takes a week to teach them all proper technique and give them all practice.
>Since hooves can’t pull triggers and modifications to the weapons’ basic designs weren’t developed in enough time, the missions’ ponies are out of luck.
>It’s up to the griffons, diamond dogs, and minotaurs to defend the convoys.
>But, finally, they’ve reached a point where you’d be comfortable sending them all off into the unknown with the deadliest weapons on the face of the planet.
>The vehicles are loaded and readied, and on Saturday, February 6, 1909, a crowd gathers on the southern end of Lancaster to watch the convoys leave.
>You give a short, unremarkable speech that the crowd adores, wishing them the best in their travels and noting the day’s significance for centuries to come.
>And, at 12:00 PM, the unmistakable sound of fifty AMC engines roaring to life echoes through the crowd, and, amid cheers and applause, the five teams of Arcadia’s finest explorers depart.
>Only they and a handful of others know the exact details of the cargo they’re bringing with them.

And done. I know I've been going AWOL for a pretty long time in between updates so I'm trying to make them a little longer than usual.

The way the story is written this event feels like it has the same amount of grandeur as Apollo 11
>>
>>29826214
I mean, the Lewis and Clark expedition has been compared to the moon landing, solely based on the amount of planning that it took to pull off. In terms of Arcadia's technological capability, it really isn't that big of a stretch. Lancaster has only been around for less than a decade, after all.

The actual moon landing will come later.
>>
>>29826339
I think the Lewis and Clark expedition comparison is an extremely apt description
>>
>You are Anonymous.
>You are in an emptying university classroom.
>The students are filing out, chatting with each other after a hard two hours of hearing you lecture them on quantum field theory.
>They all look quite excited to get out of the room.
>You don’t blame them.
>Most people find lectures boring. Even the ones that they find the subject interesting.
>But sadly, you’re paid to teach this way, although you can’t think of a much better way.
>As the last student files out you’re almost done wiping the many boards of their equations and diagrams.
>When you finish, you go to the table and clear up, putting everything into your suitcase.
>You are about to walk towards and out the door when you feel a breeze flow through the empty room.
>Thinking this odd, you turn and examine the room, finding nothing out of the ordinary.
>You feel the breeze again, stronger this time, coming from the upper rows of seats in the classroom.
>You walk up the stairs, trying to find the source of the strange pressure difference.
>You start, as a lightning bolt suddenly erupts from nowhere and grounds itself in a chair, blinding you.
>You jump backwards, nearly tripping and falling down the stairs, and lean on a table next to you and cover your eyes.
>The breeze has now turned into a gale and as you look back to where the lightning came from.
>You see a faint point of light, floating in the air.
>You start breathing hard. Your eyes immediately darted towards the door out, and you start running down the stairs, two at a time.
>You slam into the door, the handle refusing to turn as you desperately rattle it.
>You turn around, your back hugging the door, desperately trying to somehow just squeeze through the wood.
>>
>>29827470
>What you see terrifies you.
>The light has gotten painfully bright and seems to be moving towards you, lightning crackling off it but somehow not blinding you like before.
>As it gets closer and brighter you shield your eyes. Desperately calling for help.
>There’s a sudden, incredibly bright flash of light that shines through your arm, giving it a red tint.

>You suddenly feel like you’re falling, weightless in an empty black void.
>You try to look down but see nothing.
>You wave your hand infront of your face but see nothing
>You look all around but see nothing.
>After what feels like minutes you start to feel heavier.
>When you try to move your arms, they feel leaden and slow. Same for your legs.
>The feeling mounts in intensity until you are completely motionless.
>Now, when you look around, there seems to be a faint light coming from all around you.
>All the shades of the rainbow seem to flow around you, looking almost like a pulsating sphere of wavy water.
>The light steadily brightens, becoming more and more white.
>Soon the pulsating becomes more frequent and intense.
>You close your eyes as it becomes too bright, still feeling heavier than gold.
>There is one final flash.

>Your feet meet with ground but you are caught off balance and you crash, arms first, into what feel like cobbles.
>You slowly open your eyes, the heavy feeling now receding.
>You see what looks to be a wall.
>As you sit up, you see that it is a building, modestly sized, made from smooth, seamless marble.
>When you look down you see neatly arranged, not quite evenly sized flatish stones.
>As you stand up you hear the clopping of galloping hooves and the rattling of wheels coming from behind you.
>>
>>29827477
>When you turn around to look, you are met with a halberd, almost slicing your nose off.
>You back away in surprize but the back of your legs are met with something slightly soft but solid and you trip and fall, landing on what feels like a net which is promptly woven around you, trapping you.
>You are roughly lifted and tossed onto a hard surface with a wooden thump.
>You catch a glimpse of what looks to be a small black horse with a horn and blue mane before a blindfold is tied around your head.
>You hear what sounds like shouting and feel yourself accelerating as you start moving.
>You try to struggle against your bonds but you are tightly bound.

>After several minutes of squeaking wheels, lots of turning, and going into and out of echoey tunnels, it seems you arrive, somewhere.
>You are roughly picked up and dropped onto, a mattress. Perhaps this is your cell?
>The blindfold is removed and you get a good look at your abductors.
>They are indeed, small, colorful horses. All but one wearing green plate armour, the exception being a taller black horned one with blue hair
>Despite its equine face you couldn’t help but imagine it looked disgusted
>Its face was oddly flat for a horse, its thin mouth curved down in a frown, its muzzle, more of a nose than anything else, was turned up, away from you, its massive eyes tense and eyebrows slanted hubwards.
>It makes a few sounds that are vaguely like a language but sound more like someone talking with their mouth full.
>The armoured ones lift you up so you sit against the wall.
>You stare into the black ones eyes, waiting for it to make a move.
>It mumbles a few more noises and a halberd is once again inches from your face.
>The net is slowly removed from you.
>You are stock still, not wishing to provoke.
>When the net is removed the armoured ones bundle it up and back away from you, towards the door.
>Once out the door the black ones horn glows blue, in unison with the door to your cell which is slammed shut.

>You are Unknown.
>You are lying with your back on a skateboard under a large hunk of metal
>The hunk of metal in question is a jet plane. A very large black jet plane.
>And apparently the left engine doesn’t fire.
>You think it’s just a faulty fuel line but you fear it may be something worse.
>You are currently looking up at a series of tubes and wires under the belly of the jet searching for anything that might be amiss.
>After checking and re-checking you reseal the panel onto the hull and roll out from under the jet.
>You decide to check the engine it self, having failed to find any fault elsewhere.
>You climb on top of the large black monster and walk towards the aft.
>Just as you’re about to reach the engines panel you feel the plane shake violently under you.
>You fall to your knees, catching yourself on your hands.
>You hear a snap and metal scraping against metal.
>You look up and see the hangar door slam shut with a thunderous boom.
>You feel a wind pick up, swirling around you.
>The tools all around the hangar rattling in tandem with the plane you stand on.
>You stand up and jump off the plane.
>When you land you hear a loud crack of thunder from behind.
>You turn around and see that the nose of the jet is now just a burning, molten heap of scrap.
>Just beside it is a burning white light.
>As it moves along the plane you see the metal liquify and flow across the floor.
>You turn and run towards a large window next to the hangar door.
>When you reach it, you leap at the window, intending to break through it.
>But just before you hit the glass, you stop, in mid air. With nothing supporting you.
>A blue aura surrounds you as you are turned towards the now blinding light.
>As the light approaches you desperately flail your arms in an ineffectual attempt to swim away from it.
>Before it reaches you however, you see the still molten metal on the floor reach a fuel tank.
>You feel a massive explosion, a burning pain, and then darkness.
>>
>>29834289

>When you regain consciousness, you feel weightless.
>When you open your eyes it doesn’t make a difference.
>You see only darkness.
>You cannot tell how much time passes but it feels like an extensive period.
>You see a red light streak past you, leaving a line in your vision.
>You try to follow it but it’s too fast.
>You see another one. Again and again you see light streak past you, its colour becoming more bloody by the second.
>As the lights become more of a solid wall you feel your stomach drop, as if launched from a catapult. You are launched towards the lights.
>When you near, the lights become brighter and when you reach them they flash.

>You are met with blank white before your legs are met with something pliable but firm and you tumble, landing on your right shoulder quite harshly and slide before resting, face first, in the snow.
>Once you regain your wits, you slowly get your left arm under you and push, getting on your knees.
>Your shoulder aches horribly, hurting terribly every time you try to move it.
>You are also cold, stabbingly so.
>You stand up, keeping your right arm close to your side, almost cradling it.
>Snow surrounds you. You see nothing but white on a white background with small grey splotches of rock sprinkled in. With one exception.
>You see what must be a massive column of ribboned rainbow light, its many strips dancing, liken to the aurora.
>As the cold starts to truly bite, you decide that rainbow ribbon is as good a direction as any, and start walking through the heavy snow.

>You have been walking for many hours.
>You now realize the column must be even bigger than you first thought.
>Due to the terrains flatness and the snows non-existent contrast it is impossible to tell how far away things are.
>You are cold and your legs painfully pulsate with your every pulse.
>Your body and breath shake and shiver as you hug your arms tightly to your chest under your flight suit, the sleeves empty.
>>
>>29834298
>Your eyes are half closed, totally focused the pillar of light.
>You take large wading steps, each one slightly more difficult than the last.
>You keep a steady pace until the resistance abruptly disappears and your foot goes flying forward, causing you to fall, first onto your knee which promptly gives and you continue falling, face first onto…
>Grass. And warmth.
>The grass smells faintly sweet and is quite soft.
>Stunned, you thread your left arm through its sleeve and pick yourself up.
>When you turn to look behind, you see a wall, about a foot and a half tall, made of snow. Where you walked through it seems to have burst, with snow spread on the grass, already melting.
>When you look to either side you see the wall fencing a massive curve inwards and out of sight in both directions.
>In the forward direction you see rolling grassland, and you also see what seem to be the beginnings of farmed land.
>You start striding towards the nearest farm, renewed vigor in your steps and outlook sunny.

And there's some more. And oh look it was the latter of the two. I know it's not much to go off but. Any thoughts so far? What are your feelings on this? Is there something I'm doing too much of or too little?

The next update will be a little more meaty since stuff will actually happen then.
Also, I got the idea of doing two interchanging stories to keep myself interested. I don't know if it's a good or bad idea but you guys wouldn't have gotten this update if I were just doing one.

Chapter 12, everyone.

>Work strengthens the soul, the mind, the body, and the spirit.
-Verdant Blaze, The Ethic of the Equestrian

-Andrew-

>A white cloud of hot breath escaped Andrew's mouth, the cold morning air quickly causing it to fade out of sight. The sky was a dull shade of blue-gray that sat between the colorless dark of night and the bright light of the day, a color that was a perfect match with its analogue on Earth...wherever that was. He took a sip of military-issue instant coffee from the plastic cup in his hand, his insides warming up as the sun began to peek over the horizon. Andrew looked around the fields that encircled the wooden tent-shack as the first rays of light filtered through the trees. He frowned at the gnarled brown lines disturbing the otherwise uniform meadow.
>The ugly, twisted remains of the battle two days ago were strewn around the grasses, some of them still giving off wisps of a green gas-like substance even after forty or so hours of laying in the wind. Andrew remembered picking up a chunk of wood-wolf just barely after the last gunshot had been fired; it was firm and supple, like it had just come off a tree. Now, however, they were soft and mushy, crumbling into mulch at the slightest touch.
>Gray soon turned to blue with the last sip of the bitter drink, and Andrew set the cup aside on an empty crate. There was definitely more to the forest than met the eye - and if the past week was anything to go by, it wouldn't be anything good at all. A clear priority had been set from the day the wood-wolves attacked; the security of their small shack was no longer ignorable.
>>
>>29858605

>An additional door had been cut out opposite the existing one the day before, making it easier to respond to any threats quickly should the time come. The previous wooden barricades were to be reinforced with dirt and wooden spikes, as well as a shallow trench two yards out and two feet deep. Loaded rifles would be ready at each edge of the square defenses, with plenty of ammunition as well. The only way in or out would be through one of two wooden walkways that would be laid over the spikes and trenches and taken away in case of attack.
>Andrew savored a minute of respite from his daily toils, enjoying the feeling of the cold air against his body before grabbing a nearby entrenching tool and setting out to dig some holes. Manual labor could be tiring at times, but Andrew didn't mind; in fact, the repetitive nature of the work was something for him to take solace in, a sort of reminder of his childhood. He remembered how he once took his father's old shovel from the shed out back and began to dig long, straight trenches in the backyard lawn. Why, he couldn't quite remember. Maybe he was trying to build a house? His motives were unclear, but he did remember when his father returned from work, and his reaction...
>My son, what have you done?
>I...I was just...
>...heh heh...No worries. I'm not upset. I'm glad you've done this, truth be told. Your mother has been nagging to me all week about how it's so hard to find good, fresh veggies out here in the suburbs. I would have preferred for these holes to be farther back, but...you did an admirable job. I'm impressed.
>Dad was a resourceful man, one who always took the best of a situation and squeezed every ounce of opportunity out, even if it cost him a pound in work. The holes soon sprouted with tomato and pepper plants, their fruits bursting with flavor and color every summer. Even if they were in the middle of the lawn, they were still healthy and productive plants.
>>
>>29858612

>"Where there is work, there is life," he once said to Andrew out on the front porch. "You might be a bit young to understand, but know this: Every minute you spend working is a minute towards a rich life and a happy family, son."
>Andrew didn't exactly have a rich life that moment, though. Marooned on an alien world, not sure if he would ever return home, and stuck living in a ramshackle hut under the threat of danger...a two-story house in a nice neighborhood would have been much preferable. And his family?...
>He paused for a moment, the thought taking him away from his work. The sun was now in full bloom, hanging halfway between noon and morning. Sweat had poured out of his body, but Andrew was too entranced in his work to notice until then.
>His family...
>Leah was an optimist and always tried to make everyone as happy as possible. Noah was a good, strong, protective man, if a little distant at times. They had come together as friends over the last two weeks, each day bringing them a little bit closer to one another. They had grown stronger together, became more open with each other...
>Back to his work he went. Stab, step, lever, toss the dirt away. Noah had come out of their little house and started to whittle away at the thin trunks of cut-down trees from nearby. His hatchet hacked and diced away at the tips of the sticks, each chop sharpening a point just a little bit more and more. Soon, they would have their spiked trenches and a little bit more safety against whatever was in the forest. Leah was inside, communicating with the aliens. She could have helped out with their work, but her brain was the more useful asset. If those horses - and the civilization they came from - could communicate with Leah, things would probably work out smoothly. They would be safe, sheltered, treated well...
>Or captured, imprisoned, killed, and dissected.
>Optimistic thinking, Andrew Martinez. Real uplifting in these times of extreme difficulty.
>>
>>29858620

-Halberd-

>In that moment, Sapphire Halberd hated nature, he hated the woods, and he most certainly hated the Everfree forest. Case in point: the mass of branches and shrubs that bogged their little trip into the trees.
>Luna's Night Guard was an elite fighting force loyal to the Princess herself, dedicated to protecting the Guardian of Dusk and carrying out her will. They were most notable for their formidable skill in urban fighting and magical combat. They were some of Equestria's finest troops, the very best of the best. They were trained to undergo fierce trials, do the impossible, and fight with the power and precision of a thousand ponies.
>That didn't mean that they had to adore slogging through thick vegetation, though. Everyone, from the unicorn vanguard hacking a path through the bushes with their blades to the claustrophobic pegasi to the out-of-element earth ponies, was a little bit disgruntled, even if their faces didn't show it. Their devotion towards the Princess, though admirable, could not completely keep their morale high and their spirits unwavering, as the motto went.
>Corporal Halberd couldn't stop his four-pony squad from feeling a bit worn out, either. He twisted his head to the left, his lips finding purchase on the rubber-infused cloth straw strapped to his torso. The waterskin was good at its job - holding water, without leaks, in a portable and easy-to-use container - but horrible at keeping the water palatable. The bitter taste of the inner coating never seemed to go away, even after several years of dedicated use. Still, it was better than the cumbersome miniature barrels that were in use just three decades ago. A bit of a yucky taste was better than having ten more pounds on a pony's back, even for an earth pony as strong as Sapphire himself.
>>
>>29858627

>Though his legs were barely tired from the walking and his hooves free of blisters and aches, the deep blue pony was beginning to feel a little exhausted. His natural earth pony magic was strengthened and practiced through months of training, yet he felt almost a sort of hesitance to continue. Maybe it was the hours of dull, monotonous marching they had done. Maybe the forest was just throwing his senses off.
>Sometimes a pegasus would rush above their heads, a satchel of machetes over their torso, and deliver the fresh blades to the unicorn vanguard. From what he had heard during their one rest in the middle of the day, the unicorns dulled their blades at a crazy pace. Some of the branches were so hard that they actually chipped the edges of the machetes as they cut them.
>A quiet murmur broke out in front of Sapphire, in the front platoon. He leaned over to the side a little to see what was going on. The captain was talking to a pegasus scout, and he wasn't being too quiet about it. Sapphire didn't hear what they were discussing, but the ponies around him clearly did. With a nod, the scout flew back to the rear.
>"HALT!"
>The hundred pony company snapped to attention at the sound of the command, a reflex they had gained after years of service. Nopony spoke a word.
>>
>>29858638

>"Ponies, prepare to set up camp in the clearing up ahead. We'll be staying until sunrise tomorrow. Sergeants and above, the Princess has requested that you meet her in 10 minutes. Understood?"
>"Yes, SIR!" Captain Steelshield's voice was quickly drowned out by the cries of the division under his command. Princess Luna had decided to come along for this search mission, though nobody really knew why. This excursion into the woods was probably important, but Luna was rather vague about their objectives. All she had said was that they were searching for "any abnormalities in the region," and that they were to try to be as discrete as possible. Why they would have to be discrete in the middle of the Nowhere Forest, nobody knew either, but at least that was something the Night Guard was good at.
>"Dismissed."

-Leah-

>"Umm... Day...twelve? Day twelve of this video log. Of us being stuck here, I mean."
>"The boys have been making our little hut a bit safer. I think they put spikes in the ground and dug a hole around it. Really hope we won't have to use them. After the whole hydra thing and the wood-wolf attack, I guess we need to be a bit more worried about this kinda stuff."
>>
>>29858645

"Oh! The aliens! New stuff today. Learned a lot about them. Actually, I spent the entire day conversing with them. In real awkward pictograms, too. The unicorn knows a lot of math. And they have these marks on their butts, like, on the side. Apparently they're supposed to be what they do. Nice to know tattoos are universal. Actually, it was on their fur... I'll have to look into that. What else... Oh! The unicorn had a star, don't know what that's about. The pegasus had a really cool cloud with a rainbow lightning bolt. I mean, it has - no, she. They have males and females. She has a rainbow mane. Maybe they have a religion and this has to do with it? And the orange horse has three apples on it. It's definitely a farmer. And apples. That's something I didn't expect, but I probably should have."
"Also. The unicorn did more weird stuff with its horn. Yesterday, it was holding stuff with the weird energy. Today, it made light with it. We were waking up, and it was still kinda dark. So I'm fumbling around, and she - the three horses are all female - her horn just lights up. Like, there's a little sphere of light hovering right above the tip, and it's as bright as a lightbulb. I didn't fall over, but... I mean, yeah. I was a bit surprised."
"I've really been thinking about this ability they have. It's clear that the light is some sort of energy - I mean, it doesn't get much more 'energy' than light. What else can they do? The unicorn practically bulldozed half of the wood-wolves when they were attacking. If we had to fight them, it would definitely be a tough time. Let's hope it doesn't come to that."
Leah stared into the camera, a smorgasbord of emotions on her face. Excitement, curiosity... nervousness, a little bit of fear, just a smidgen of despair...
She regained her focus and wiped the negativity off her face. Sadness never helped anybody.
"I guess that's it for now. Until later, I guess."
>>
>>29858645

>With a tap of the space bar, Leah stopped the recording and dragged it into the "Video Log" folder. Another tap, and the sixteen-inch screen shut off, bringing the already dark room into the total darkness of night.

That's it for now, sorry it took a bit longer than usual.

>>29858687
I do think a slightly, only slightly, quicker pace might improve the experience. It would be nice for just a few more things to happen per chapter. This could be achieved by making the main story move faster, but it could also be achieved by introducing more small elements into things. As an example, in your latest chapter, you could have had our soldier pony have a little argument, or something else embarrassing for him happen. What I mean is that you have small things happen to small characters that don't really matter to the story but are relatable enough to us to care, more than the expected shitty nature of walking through a forest for hours.

I sometimes think about writing Ponies-in-Our-World stuff but it keeps going off the rails and turning grimdark in my head. Maybe I'm too misanthropic. They live in an adorable sugar-bowl cartoon world with not a lot of real problems, other than the monster of the week. Our world's a snakepit by comparison, even the civilized parts. Or maybe that's just how it looks to me because I'm having a bad month.

Strangely, I went to a gun show this weekend, and there was a vendor with tables of stuffed animals (though it was teddy bears, not poners). People were also selling books, jewelry, bins of cheap hammers and screwdrivers made in China, beef jerky, homemade salsa... I estimate only about 40% of the tables were vendors selling firearms or anything with any relation to firearms.

Not dead, it's just he comes annually.
I remember him updating around late July early sept both in '15 and '16, and dissappears by February.

The pastes got reorganized right near the end to make room for the last update. Some of the stuff that used to be in part 3 is now in part 2. Sorry for any confusion.

The story ends with Twilight writing a letter to Celestia. There is some mention of her relationship with her friends in that post, but it doesn't really give all the answers you might want. The epilogue isn't marked as anything special, it's just tacked on to the end of part 3's paste.

I was thinking about sitting on this for a couple days what with the new season having just hit, but what the hell. It'll still be here when you're all done posting fillies.

>Lyra could scarcely contain her excitement after her successful heist.
>Were anypony watching who was unfamiliar with the mare, they’d doubtlessly think her mad.
>Were anypony watching who WAS familiar, they’d still think her mad.
>But in a charming, loveable way.
>She quivered with happiness as she floated into her home.
>Lyra quickly stripped off her black suit and stowed it away in her dresser before moving to the kitchen with the stolen notes in tow.
>She sat down at the kitchen table.
>And then she looked at them.

“What the hay is this!?”

>They were total nonsense.
>She had no idea what was going on.
>Lyra deflated, dropping her face on the table in frustration.
>She scorned herself for thinking it would be that easy.
>She was going against Twilight Sparkle of all ponies.
>Twilight excelled at pretty much everything she did.
>Beating her would be…
>Tough.
>And Lyra didn’t really know what she was doing.
>But still, on the other hoof…
>She had seen that weird glowy box and read what it said.
>Lyra perked up a bit at that thought.
>The papers may be useless to her, but she didn’t walk away empty hoofed.
>But what to make of it?
>>
>>29889574
>And what next?
>What would she do with this information?
>Who should she tell?
>Could she tell anypony?
>Wouldn’t that risk her being figured out?
>And even if she DID find a way to share what she knew without getting caught, what good would it do?
>She had no proof.
>The giddy Lyra from moments ago was gone, and in its place was a sober Lyra.
>She was once again lost and without direction.
>All she had was a vague idea that Twilight was lying about weird machines, and a bunch of meaningless papers.
>And knowledge that a new one, something named 057, might be on the way soon.
>She tried to think back to the one document she did understand.
>She couldn’t quite remember-
>AL0!
>She ran to her room and wrote it down before she could forget.
>Grabbing a fountain pen and quickly refilling the reservoir, she jotted down the words.

Somepony, or someTHING named ‘AL0’ said that 057 (a tool that does math) couldn’t be released to the public.

>She then hastily blotted the ink and tucked the note pad she’d written it on under her bed.
>Now if only she could figure out who AL0 was, or find a machine that did math.
>Then maybe she could start putting pieces together.
>She returned to the kitchen and saw an envelope on the table.
>Lyra was pretty darn sure that that envelope hadn’t been there a moment ago.
>In it was a note written in clean block printing.
>It clearly wasn’t penned by somepony’s hoof.

Never get seen by one of those cameras again. They send the pictures elsewhere. I think I got rid of them for you this time. Next time you won’t be so lucky.
Be careful, this goes way deeper than you know.
They will stop at NOTHING to track you down.
I will be in touch.

-A friend.

P.S. you dropped these.

>Lyra’s heart was hammering away in her chest.
>She sat down before her trembling legs gave out.
>She’d been caught.
>Everything had gone so perfectly, and she was still found out.
>By whom?
>>
>>29889582
>Were they really a friend?
>Was she going to be safe?
>If not, what were they going to do to her?
>It took several minutes for her senses to return to her.
>But eventually her breathing slowed to a normal rate.
>She looked at the note again.
>’I will be in touch.’
>How would she know who this pony was?
>Could she trust them?
>Should she go into hiding?
>COULD she hide?
>Wait.
>Dropped what?
>Lyra opened the envelope and looked inside to see three mint green hairs.
>Her face went red as her blood pressure soared.
>She’d left hairs of all things at the scene!
>They’d have known the colour of her coat, and mint green wasn’t a particularly common shade.
>If she hadn’t been caught by whoever this pony was, she would have surely been caught by Twilight.
>She could have been in prison by dawn!
>It was then that Lyra knew.
>She wasn’t cut out for this spy stuff.
>She had to quit for her own safety.
>The idea was torturous to her.
>Leaving all these mysteries unsolved.
>Not knowing would be Tartarus for the curious pony.
>But she knew the risks.
>And she knew she wasn’t good enough.
>Lyra went and retrieved her note book from under her bed and tore out the page she’d so recently written on.
>She grabbed the documents she’d stolen as well as the envelope.
>And then she crumpled them all up.
>Lyra stood before the trash can, but she hesitated.
>Would she ever be able to forget what she’d seen?
>Was it even possible to return to her old life now?
>The electric lighting hung above her, illuminating the room around her.
>A few years ago she would have laughed at the idea of such a device.
>Now she suspected, nay, KNEW it represented something far greater.
>A secret she was not meant to know.
>Lyra looked outside at the rapidly growing maze of concrete that had swallowed up her former home.
>It too was a reminder of what lay beneath her hooves.
>The rate at which the city was growing and the size of the buildings were both unimaginable, yet real.
>>
>>29889589
>She stared at the crumpled notes before her.
>One had been written with a fountain pen.
>Just last year she’d been using a quill.
>Scarcely anypony had a fountain pen, the metal was simply too valuable.
>And now?
>She was throwing out metal cans without a second thought.
>What had changed?
>She didn’t know, but she was pretty sure she knew where that change had come from.
>Lyra stood between two worlds.
>On one side was an illusion she’d seen through.
>A false reality that would always be fake to her.
>To the other side there lay truth.
>A world of mystery and deception that she was not fit to face.
>Lyra had to choose.
>Did she pretend to swallow the lie?
>Or did she take a stand against princess Twilight and risk retribution?
>It was a choice she didn’t want to make.
>But the stakes were too high.
>Lyra hesitantly dropped the papers in the trash.
>And with them she discarded her hopes of ever learning the truth.

Two days later.

>Lyra hadn’t slept since that night.
>Not properly at least.
>The mystery still weighed heavily on her mind.
>As well as the fear that the royal guard would barge into her home at any moment.
>The constant tension was taking its toll on her, and apparently it showed.

>”What’s wrong?”

>Bon-Bon asked as her bed mate turned over for the umpteenth time that night.

“Nothing. I’m fine.”

>”No you aren’t.”

>Were she more awake Lyra would have been embarrassed by the transparent lie.

“I’m just worried about some things is all.”

>”Such as?”

>She couldn’t tell the truth.
>But Lyra knew she couldn’t get away with lying either.
>She was lying next to Special Agent Sweetie Drops.
>A pony who was adept at digging up the truth and sussing out secrets.
>Even before learning of that identity Lyra knew it was impossible to lie to Bon-Bon.
>But now she knew why.
>A half truth would have to do.
>Something that had been eating at her, just not the right thing.

>”Lyra?”
>>
>>29889594
“The roc. I just felt so helpless there. I tried to do something to save you, but in the end I was useless. I couldn’t do anything. What if you’d been hurt?”

>It was true.
>That incident had weighed heavily on her mind.
>She’d more or less put it behind her when the danger had passed.
>But in the moment it was horrifying.

>”Don’t talk about that so openly. It’s fine this time, but… You know my favourite kind of candy, right?

“Dark chocolate truffles with toasted hazelnut topping and a ganache center.”

“Almond. Toasted almond. Just ask me what my favourite candy is if you ever want to talk about these things. If I say that you know it isn’t. And about the attack? I’ve dealt with way worse than a roc before and walked away just fine. You don’t need to worry about me.”

“But-”

>”No buts! I hardly ever actually face the monsters myself, and I’m more than ready to deal with them if I have to. I’ll be fine.”

>Lyra didn’t answer.
>She instead continued to not sleep.
>About an hour passed in relative silence.

>”Still worried?”

“Yeah. You don’t know what it’s like to feel helpless.”

>Bon-Bon tensed up for a an instant.
>It was brief, Lyra wasn’t even really sure it had happened.
>Bon-Bon then stared blankly at the ceiling for a couple of minutes.

>”I’ll keep you safe.”

“You can’t always be there, Bonny.”

>”But I’m here right now.”

>Bon-Bon wrapped her legs around her bunkmate and held her friend close.
>And Lyra quickly fell asleep in the comforting embrace.
>Morning came far too soon.
>And Lyra reluctantly opened her eyes.
>Bon-Bon was still there, wide awake.
>Lyra was surprised
>Her Bonny had always been an early riser.
>And Lyra was pretty sure she’d slept in.
>It was strange, but Lyra wasn’t about to object.
>There were worse ways to greet a new day.

“Thank you.”

>Bon-Bon tried to answer.
>And she failed.
>Instead she yawned loudly.
>>
>>29889603
“Did I keep you up all night? Sorry. Just kick me out next time.”

>”Not your fault. I’m just worried.”

“About?”

>No answer.

“I’ll go and make you breakfast. Unless you’re going back to sleep?”

>”I’ll get up in a minute.”

>Lyra made her way to the kitchen and set to work.
>She removed the mixing bowl from the dishwasher, assembled the electric beater, and pulled a box of pancake mix from the cupboard.
>Lyra tore open the plastic bag within and liberally poured.
>Before long she was flipping oat laden foodstuffs in the teflon frying pan.
>She was nearly done with both servings by the time a very groggy Bon-Bon emerged from their bedroom.
>She sat before her meal with a smile that didn’t quite reach the eyes.
>Lyra soon joined her.

“Wanna talk about it?”

>”Yup.”

>She began eating in silence.

“ARE you going to talk about it?”

>She nodded rather than speaking with her mouth full.
>Lyra was willing to accept that.
>If Bon-Bon said something, she believed it.
>Few ponies were half as reliable in Lyra’s experience.
>And so assured that she was going to get her answers in due time, she set to eating.
>Breakfast was over before either of them spoke.
>Lyra was levitating their plates into the dishwasher when she finally got her answer.

>”You’re right.”

“Hm?”

>”What you said last night. You’re right. I can’t always be there to keep you safe.”

“What’s your favourite candy?”

>”Try to work it in more naturally next time. And I’m not talking about monsters. Ponyville isn’t as safe as it used to be.”

“Less safe than the city that got blown up in a fight between Tirek and a turbo-charged alicorn princess?”

>”Okay, fair point. But- what can I tell you. No, no... Hrmm. The criminal I’ve been assigned to find. They struck again a- recently.”

>Lyra couldn’t help but tense up.
>Luckily for her, Bon-Bon misread the reaction.
>>
>>29889615
>”It is unclear if they are still in town, though we know they are still active.”

>Bon-Bon spoke slowly and deliberately, clearly picking each word with great care.
>She was holding something back.
>Probably some sensitive information, or maybe details they weren’t sure of.
>Lyra wasn’t sure what was being hidden, she just hoped it wasn’t important.
>Such as a new hint from her last escapade.

“What do you know about them?”

>”Powerful unicorn. They’ve broken into six homes.”

>What.

>”And they beat somepony pretty bad last time.”

“What?”

>”Yeah. They broke into somepony’s home, stole a bunch of stuff, smashed other things, and beat the resident to a pulp. They’re dangerous and violent. And I can’t find them.”

>Lyra was pretty sure she didn’t do most of those things.
>She wasn’t really sure what to make of this news.

“Are they going to be okay?”

>”Hm. I don’t know how well they’ll fare. I’m not a doctor. Luckily, they tagged their assailant, so whoever we’re after should be visibly hurt. That narrows down the search a lot. And we still can’t find them. It’s almost as if- hrmm. No matter. The point is that there’s a very dangerous pony on the loose who isn’t above breaking into homes and who will attack anypony who sees them.”

>Lyra wasn’t too worried about all that.
>She was pretty sure she wasn’t going to beat herself up.
>Unless, maybe there was somepony else?
>Could it possibly be that she wasn’t-
>The pony who returned her hairs to her!
>THEY must be the one prowling around!
>And they knew where she lived.
>Were they really a friend?
>What if they got caught, would they reveal her secret?
>Were they going to blackmail her?

>”If you meet this pony, just run. But if you can’t run, well… I’d feel a lot more comfortable if you knew how to fight.”

>Lyra’s eyes could have put dinner plates to shame.
>Her face hurt from grinning too wide.
>>
>>29889623
>She’d seen how Sweetie Drops fought.
>Her idol was probably the toughest pony alive.
>She DEFINITELY wanted to learn how she’d done that.

“You’re going to teach me how to punch out a Roc with one kick!?”

>”Two kicks. And no, I can’t.”

“Aww! But that was so cool!”

>Lyra whined unabashedly.

“Classified?”

>”What? No. You can take Jigutaedo classes down at the community center.”

“Jiga-what?”

>”The problem is that you’re a unicorn.”

“So what?”

>”So you can’t use Earth’s breath.”

>Lyra deadpanned.

“Earth. Breath.”

>”Yeah. The vital force of the planet. It’s an Earth pony thing.”

“Sounds made up.”

>”What do they teach at Princess Celestia’s school?”

“Unicorn stuff.”

>Bon-Bon couldn’t hide the incredulous look on her face.

>”How could anypony know that little about Earth pony magic?”

“Look, I grew up in Canterlot. Not a lot of Earth ponies around there.”

>That answer clearly didn’t satisfy Bon-Bon who just shook her head in amazement.

“What can you tell me about mana flux between bodies as they approach equilibrium? Because if you don’t understand that you’re going to have a lot of trouble with basic spells.”

>”That flux will approach zero and you need to compensate by activating more of your horn if you want to maintain a steady flow of mana!”

“Oh. Yeah, actually.”

>”So you really don’t know ANYTHING about how Earth pony magic works?”

>Lyra bashfully shook her head.

>”This is going to take a practical demonstration. Come with me.”

>Bon-bon started walking out.

“But I’m not done with the dishes.”

>”I’ll finish them later. Come!”

>Lyra shrugged before following.
>The two of them pushed through the throngs of ponies going through their daily business.
>Each and every one of them walking blindly through the growing urban sprawl, never once wondering from whence it came.
>>
>>29889639
>They were just happy to reap the rewards of all this change without a single thought in their head.
>Their lack of curiosity disgusted Lyra.
>And the knowledge that she was so recently like them only made it worse.
>Neon signs adorned the five and six story tall buildings they walked past as they cut through the heart of the city.
>The two waited for the traffic lights to halt the flow of carts before passing the too wide streets.
>Realisation hit her hard.
>The streets were too wide.
>They weren’t designed for carts or carriages.
>What WERE they designed for?
>She threw the idea out knowing the only way for her to find out was to wait.
>She wasn’t going to risk her neck on all that stuff anymore.
>Even if she really wanted to.
>They headed out well beyond city limits.
>Massive transmission towers ran out across the landscape carrying in power from who knows where.

“Say, do you know where the power is actually made?”

>”Huh. I’d never thought to ask.”

>Even Bon-Bon, an actual secret agent whose job it was to look for weird things.
>Even she hadn’t stopped to wonder.
>It felt to Lyra like the whole world was blind, and she’d just opened one eye for the first time.
>They continued to walk through the hot, dry landscape.
>Dead grass crunched beneath their hooves as they walked through the arid, overheated landscape.
>Luckily for Lyra, her comrade had stuffed their saddlebags full of water bottles.
>A great deal of walking later, the two were in Ghastly Gorge.
>Bon-Bon spotted a large boulder and smiled.
>She gestured towards it.

>”There. Does that look sturdy?”

>Lyra had no idea what she was talking about.
>Of course it looked sturdy!
>It was a boulder!

“Yyyyes?”

>”Do you think you could break it?”

“Not without dynamite.”
>>
>>29889646
>”It has a bit of Earth’s breath in it. It’s nearly unbreakable, unmoveable, and heavy. But what if I told you that I’d seen untrained Earth ponies break them apart with just their hooves?”

>Lyra was torn.
>The idea was absurd to her.
>But this was Bon-Bon talking.

>”They could do it because they were more like the Earth than the rock they kicked apart. They took the Earth into their body and let its power fill them. They become unbreakable and unstoppable. If they were trained they could have done it in a single blow. Stand back.”

>She walked up to the boulder.
>Bon-Bon was no more than half as tall as the rock that she stood next to.
>She casually swung her hoof at it.
>For a split second just before impact her hoof glowed brilliantly.
>And the boulder shattered.
>Tiny shards of stone flew everywhere as the once mighty rock was reduced to gravel.
>Lyra’s jaw dropped.
>She could only watch in awe as the tiny mare walked back from the scene of destruction.

>”Fill your body with the Earth’s breath and become a stone. Focus it just where you need it and become a boulder. Time it just when you need it, and you can strike with the weight of a mountain.”

“You… that… AWESOME!”

>Bon-Bon ate the praise up with gusto.

>”Thank you. It’s nice being able to show off for once. Hiding half your life all the time is tiresome, you know? No. I suppose you don’t.”

>Lyra didn’t.
>Yet.
>It took Lyra a while to get over her amazement.
>The Roc thing was incredible.
>But to see such a massive boulder explode into fragments?
>That was something else entirely.

>”So, yeah. Unless you can do that there’s not much point in learning the style I use.”

“How did you not hurt yourself?”

>Bon-Bon tapped her chest with the hoof that had just reduced a boulder to gravel.
>Her hoof didn’t glow this time.

>”Harder than a rock. More like Earth than the boulder was.”

>Lyra had thought that was just metaphor.
>>
>>29889649
“So, doing that thing makes you crazy strong?”

>”I wish! It makes me heavy. Get my hoof up to speed, make it weigh a few million tonnes, and momentum does the rest.”

>Strike with the weight of a mountain.
>She wasn’t joking.
>Bon-Bon could crush things with the weight of a literal mountain.
>Lyra decided then and there that she must never be kicked by an Earth pony.
>And then after thinking about it a bit longer, she felt even more vulnerable.
>If every Earth pony she passed in the streets could do that…

“Can any Earth pony do that?”

>”Nope! It’s really hard actually. Drawing that power in is really tiring, so you need to focus it exactly where and when you need it or else you’ll wear yourself out. It takes a lot of discipline and practice. I’m one of the best.”

>One of.
>There were ponies out there who were better than that.
>It could be darn near any Earth pony.
>For all Lyra knew, Pinkie Pie had the power to crush boulders with a single blow.
>She’d never before felt so inadequate.
>Levitating stuff was nice and all.
>And light spells were useful.
>But it hardly seemed fair.
>Earth ponies were so amazing.
>And here she was, just a simple unicorn.
>How could she compete?
>What if she got hit by an Earth pony guard next time she was poking around Twilight’s secret stuff?
>Lyra quickly chastised herself.
>That part of her life was over.
>She would never again do something so risky.
>Although if-
>No.
>Nope!
>Too risky.

>”But unicorns can do some pretty amazing things if they know how. And everypony should know how to protect themselves. Even in the best of times, things can turn sour fast. I’ll pick out a master for you.”

“You’re going to pick them out? What if I don’t like them? What if I don’t want to learn to fight at all? Don’t I get a say in the matter?”

>”Nope!”
>>
>>29889657
>And she happily trotted away.
>But not back towards Ponyville.
>Lyra knew immediately that something was up.
>Bon-Bon was making no effort to hide it.
>But she decided it was probably best not to ask.
>Instead she returned home alone.
>After swallowing a couple liters of water she set to work.
>Despite Bon-Bon’s promise to finish up the dishes, mint horse elected to deal with the task on her own.
>She knew that Sweetie Drops was a busy mare, and that she herself had barely any responsibilities.
>It was the least she could do.
>Lyra couldn’t help but marvel at her room mate at times.
>Bon-Bon seemed to have limitless energy.
>Others would finish with their work day, come home, and collapse on their couch.
>But Bon-Bon somehow managed to juggle two lives without ever seeming tired.
>How she did it Lyra had no clue.
>Lyra closed the dishwasher and set it to run.
>But as she walked out of the kitchen, she noticed something.
>Mana leakage.
>A lot of it.
>It was nothing to worry about, just a sign of an unskilled unicorn using a spell in a sloppy manner.
>A unicorn who had refined their craft or had a talent for a certain incantation would never waste so much mana
>This was a sign of a novice using a spell they weren’t good at.
>Say a foal first learning to levitate, or an adult trying for the umpteenth time to teleport.
>But Lyra was on edge.
>She still hadn’t gotten over her failed escapade from a few nights earlier.
>This was probably somepony whiffing a levitation spell.
>Or maybe it was a hit squad preparing to breach and silence her forever.
>She was scared.
>And so she ducked into their undersized basement and hid behind some boxes.
>Shortly after settling in the basement door opened.
>But no hoofsteps came down.

>”I’m not here to hurt you.”

>The voice came from above.
>Whoever it was spoke with a gravelly affectation.
>They didn’t want to be recognised.
>It was definitely a mare though.
>Lyra held her breath.
>>
>>29889667
>”You’re going to have to be a lot more careful. Whatever you do, don’t get caught.”

>Not quite what she was expecting Twilight’s henchmares to say.
>But she wasn’t going to be lured out.
>She was going to stay hidden.

>”I get that you don’t trust me. And I don’t want you to. It could easily be a trick, they’re not above such things. Just- I have to go.”

>Something fell down the stairs.
>The door closed.
>And Lyra could just barely hear hoofsteps leaving.
>It was an awkward gait, almost as though the pony moving wasn’t familiar with their legs.
>But they were definitely walking away.
>Lyra cautiously popped out of her hiding place.
>A small brown box lay at the bottom of the stairs.
>She foolishly opened it.
>There were a number of things inside.
>First was a small transparent visor.
>Lyra levitated it out of the box and stared in confusion.
>Why would somepony break into her home and kick a visor down the stairs?
>Beneath it lay a bunch of crumpled up papers.
>The ones she’d taken from Twilight, and the note she’d written herself.
>Whoever this was, they’d been going through her trash.
>And translating the notes?

I must reiterate that our encryption methods are lacking. Anypony with a passing understanding of cryptography would crack this with ease. I understand that this is how method once served you well, but times have changed and so must we. AL3

You raise an excellent point. Our budget is strained as it is and we won't be able to release this to the public any time soon. However, we will wind up spending more in the long run if we don't do it right the first time. The advanced lines are excessive for what we've planned for the coming months, but we will be wanting them in the years to come. AL0

Requesting permission to destroy all samples of art-148. It appears to have no constructive applications and is exceptionally dangerous. I remain skeptical that it will function as expected but even if it does, to what end? We are not monsters. We’ve no need for such fangs. AL2

AL1

>Lyra didn’t know what to make of this.
>Why the coded language inside the coded message?
>What are all these things?
>What’s so special about those specific facilities?
>Whatever was going on, Lyra didn’t like it.
>She shoved everything back in the box and climbed up stairs, intent on destroying the evidence.
>Upon reaching the top she turned left to go to the kitchen-

>”Always clear the corners.”

>Lyra jumped in shock.
>The voice had come from right behind her.
>She whipped around and lit her horn in a panic.
>The intruder used their telekinesis to grab her horn and pull her head back.

>”Really? You don’t check corners, you open a box that could have been a bomb, you trapped yourself when you picked your hiding place, and you don’t know how to fight. I might be wasting my time with you. But I’m getting desperate, so you’ll have a chance to prove yourself.”

“Please don’t hurt me!”

>”Hurt you? I need you healthy for what comes next.”

>The magic cut out and she was free to move.

>Lyra finished turning.
>There was a pony wearing a black hooded cloak.
>She couldn’t see any identifying features.
>Lyra took a few steps back to put some distance between them.
>The other didn’t react.
>>
>>29889683
“Who are you?”

>”That’s not important. You are Lyra Heartstrings. Born Quintilis fourth 978 E.S. Blood type B. Failed out of Princess Celestia’s school in your last year because of you’re terrible at evocation. Fined for littering at age 18, but otherwise no criminal record. You’ve got 1,487 bits in the bank, you send your parents a letter every month, and it’s been 47 days since you last bought peanut butter. Need I go on?”

>Lyra was in shock.
>Whoever this was, they knew way too much about her.
>How could she possibly know her bank balance of all things?
>And what was all that about peanut butter?
>This just keeps getting weirder.

“How do you know all this?”

>”They’re keeping track of everything. To what end I cannot say. I do know this, however. They’ll not be satisfied until they know what you’re thinking before you even think it.”

>Lyra had a LOT of questions.
>But one thing was nagging her even more than the rest.
>This pony said that ‘they’ were tracking everything.
>But she never actually said how she herself knew.

“Are you one of them?”

>”I don’t know anymore.”

“How could you not know?”

>No answer.

“What do they want?”

>No answer.

“What do YOU want?”

>”An answer.”

>Somehow that was even less useful than the silence.

>”No, I’m going to help you. You aren’t good enough to find the truth. Nopony is. They do the impossible on a daily basis, so if you want to keep up you’re going to have to be impossible as well. I can help you with that. In that box there is a visor. They call it ART-097-D. Call it whatever you like. That visor will help you find compounds and infiltrate them. I modified it so it’ll also help you find any tracking systems on anything you might decide to take home. Your top priority should be to get as much of their equipment as possible, because there’s no way a mere unicorn could reach the bottom. I offer you a choice. You can take it and go out into the world. If you’re clever and cautious you’ll soon see things as they really are. You’ll come face to face with the ugly truth. A terrible reality you’ll wish you could forget. You will hate the world you live in, but it will be real. Or you could destroy the visor and return to your happy lie. A safe, comfortable life of blissful ignorance. Choose carefully, because once you see the truth there will be no going back.”

That’s it.

The way Earth ponies are depicted in canon has always irked me. They’re supposed to be magical ponies living in a fantasy world. Why then are their abilities so boring? Growing plants super fast is admittedly useful, but it’s not really interesting or fun. And a vaguely defined level of super strength is again a handy thing to have, but it still lacks zazz. High level unicorns can teleport, turn apples into oranges, and even command heavenly bodies when they work as a group. High level pegasi can whip up storms at will, call down lightning strikes, and fly faster than sound. This is an attempt to make skilled Earth ponies less boring. Get some mysticism up in there. Stoneskin and million tonne limbs may not be as interesting as unicorn magic, but it’s better than what they have.
I don’t speak Korean, but I think that Jigutaedo loosely translates to ‘Earth’s kicking style’. If anybody here actually speaks Korean, could you please offer a better name?

That was the goal. Super strength is pretty boring after all. And I wasn't really satisfied with just saying they can kick through boulders without explaining how. If you only describe what something can do without explaining the inner workings, you don't leave room for creative use or adaptation. Say an Earth pony has other reasons why they might want to be really heavy. Perhaps they're using themselves as an anchor point for something. Now they can. If I'd just accepted that they can kick through rocks and left it there they'd have a one dimensional ability that couldn't be explored. I don't know if this will ever come up again but it adds depth and options that might some day be useful.

A solid hypothesis. I'll of course neither confirm nor deny. There are two details you appear to have overlooked that might help you conclude this pony's identity with more certainty.

As per >>29796092 I'm going to make Lyra suspicious of GilmGlam. She lacks some of the knowledge you used, but you've presented something that could raise suspicion even without the bit she didn't notice in position to be the first on the scene, close enough to Twilight that she might have privileged info, unicorn who can teleport. Now if only she had some idea of how to investigate. Because at this point there is really no proof either way.

Thanks for this by the way. It's making this project more interesting on my end.
>>
>>29896604
Wild Theory: Spike is body possessing GlimGlam thus explaining the unicorn having a weird gait almost as though the pony moving wasn’t familiar with their legs, and whiffing a basic levitation spell
>>
>>29896604
I said that from a reader perspective, it wasnt meant to be Lyra's, but still if you want to include stretches, we can use them and take a look at the second suspect I didnt reveal, along with what I think may be these two details, starting with the peanut butter inquisition, from when the spy-mare was telling Lyra's personal info, the suspect would be Trixie, point and case, yet there s not much actually pointing to her thus far and, again, this would be too much of a stretch to be made from this and this only. On other hand Starlight would probably check for other info instead on saying something like that. Then there s the "Mana leakage(...)Sign of unskilled unicorn" + sloppy use, and while you may ve thought that could be something noticeable to undermine the suspect later, I m afraid that s wrong, the crackers would need to be considered first for it to be of any use as its too broad by itself, and even then these cant really be used as argument withouth stretching or kicking around in the dark and hoping to hit something, too early to be considered with the amount of proof we have for her yet, if its right, you just shot yourself in the foot for this mistery by using a constant value instead of a variable. Get some tips with S.M.I.L.E. will ya? ^:)

Anyway gonna let other anons have their fun now instead of spoiling it all

>>
>>29890838
I'm sticking to my guns, goddamnit. It's all an inside job.

Though the mystery pone is most likely Starlight, for obvious reasons. She's the only one I can think of that can canonically teleport and be close enough to Twilight to know about the fancy math machine stuff.

Story prompt? Story prompt.
Sorry if it's a bit shit/has been done before.
>Villain of the Week steals the tech that Anon had on him when he arrived in Equestria
>Reverse-engineers it over the course of months
>idk the process is sped up considerably with the assistance of minions and magic
>Captures some significant character and/or leader and traps them in a dream machine/lotus eater machine
>The mane 6 go inside the simulations on purpose to overcome the obstacles and free whichever character has been captured; they bring along Anon because they figure he'd know something about technology, seeing as how he grew up around it
>Most of the challenges for the mane 6 test their Elements; Dash has to choose her friends over some dream opportunity; Applejack has to tell the truth knowing full-well that doing so would cause much more harm than telling a lie would; Pinkie has to overcome a miserable world without an ounce of happiness in it; etc
>Anon takes the longest to get out of his machine and won't answer any of the ponies questions about what he had to overcome
>Anon's simulation was that he was finally back home with his family, and the challenge was voluntarily leaving it all behind again
>The captured significant character is freed, the villain is put behind bars, Celestia returns Anon's device and gently chides Anon to be more careful about what he does with his "human magic", and Anon goes back to his cottage in Ponyville and gets drunk

>Has a couple of sets of smelting equipment and hires 2 or 3 ponies to increase production
>Smelting steel never picks up on a large scale due to the lack of war
>Steel is largely used when a local pony needs a part made with something stronger than iron or bronze
>Ponyville gains a bit of an obscure reputation amongst cooks and engineers for being able to provide specialty cookware or a better version of an existing tool (or stronger building material)
>Due to ponies' limited scope, nobody ever really looks at Anon's steel and thinks "I'll bet this could be used to stab somepony really good."
>Anon succeeds in introducing steel without bringing war along with it, and improves the lives of many ponies
>Good end
>>
>>29900734
Cute.

Then again I seem to recall that, in our world, there was a huge potential market for inexpensive steel for things like better quality horseshoes that would last longer than wrought iron, kitchen knives, and so on. Before the Bessemer process if you wanted a decent axe a blacksmith had to either make tremendously labor-intensive blister steel or buy tremendously expensive, tremendously labor-intensive crucible or maybe Wootz steel, and take just enough of it to make three or four razor blades and weld the tiny sliver of steel into a wrought iron hatchet or axe head to give it a good cutting edge that would hold up in hard use.

I was under the impression that steel manufacture being tremendously profitable due to military use didn't really get started until the era of ironclad warships and dreadnoughts, in the last decades of the 19th Century.
