Actually none of this is real. 4 years ago Moot deleted /mlp/ on April 1st and banned all pony-related images from being posted at all.

The outcry was so severe, several ponyfags suffered massive mental trauma and some people have been rumored to still believe /mlp/ is an actual board by typing to 4chan's 404 page thinking their shitposts and pony images are actually being read by others.

Sometimes you conscious tries to look out for you though. You just have to listen.

It's a combination.

Partially the fan base is too vibrant for the board to actually just keel over from inactivity. People just love this shit. They won't stop. So it keeps traffic coming to 4chan and keep the turnover nice and high enough to be worth keeping.

Partially it's because even if the popularity were to dip, the rest of the website is so insanely triggered by ponies that they can't afford to let any more of it leak out of here than already has. Closing the board would just vomit pony onto everything else.
People don't care as much as they used to but god damn it, they still care, way too much.
