My main problem with the show since S6 is that Starlight's arc usurped the existing map arc.
We still get map episodes now and then, but after 2 seasons we still don't know what the endgame is, what the tree's origins are etc.

I think one big reason for this is the movie. Specifically, they can't risk upsetting the status quo for the movie, since they started on making it 3 years ago and thus didn't know what the story path would be for the past 2 seasons, so things were kind of Frozen, so to speak, in how they could set up the world for the movie.

they can't tackle any endgame or big devs for the map or the tree or the mane six without risking upsetting the status quo for the movie, and so they have to keep things running in filler mode until after the movie.
