The whole point is that the "spot" was only created because Sunset made it possible. Hasbro is a very conservative company, they don't like taking risks, and adding a new protagonist is a hell of a risk, it isn't unheard of shows being ruined by the inclusion of a new character no one likes. It was the success of Sunset that convinced Hasbro to let Haber and Miller add their shitty OC to the show, but it's fact that watchers would rather have Sunset than a new character.
It seems Hasbro wants to keep EqG separate from the show, but still in continuity and canon to it. Adding Sunset to the show while keeping her in EqG at the same time would automatically make the movies non-canon, while taking her off the movies would make them pointless.
