I'd say her backstory is pretty trash, Giga-Satan, they kind of ruined it with the context they gave her.

I mean, she started a fucking cult based around her own insecurities. The cult is interesting because of how much it stands out in the happy-go-lucky world of MLP. After she gets BTFO, she decides to change fucking time itself to better suit her. This pony goes from 0 to 100 without much in-between. Nightmare Moon, Discord, Chrysalis, Sombra, Tirek; all of these godlike beings simply wanted to exert control over their current reality. Glimmer wanted to fucking annihilate it, which is incredible.

All of these events are kind of ruined by WHAT Glimmer is; a unicorn. With no friends. That's it. Her whole raison d'être is based around losing one friend and being unable to cope and make new friends. It's like being in a DnD campaign, and some random everyday peasant named Steve decides to end reality for REASONS. Great for a humorous campaign, but not the type of character you'd use for a serious one.

Trixie walked into Ponyville and started acting like a complete asshat the first time, and the second time to basically take everything from Twilight out of spite and hatred, which was not actually influenced by the Amulet. Trixie only go the amulet to give her some actual magical power so that she could best Twilight (so she basically cheated).
Starlight, on the other hand, was simply staying in her village (before their first encounter) when Twilight and her friends, sent there by the castle, waltzed in and brought down Starlight's little operation. The second time, Starlight was out for revenge, of course, because the little regime that been her entire life's work up until that point just got toppled. Starlight didn't need any magical amulet, and she actually was very close to beating Twilight, who had become an alicorn long after Trixie's attempt to beat Twilight with the Amulet. This, on top of the fact that all it took was bad writing a simple talking to to get Starlight to back down from completely wrecking Equestrian Space-Time would probably cause Twilight to be a bit partial to Starlight over Trixie.
Another thing is their reasons for doing what they did. The first time she showed up in Ponyville, she was being a showpony, but towards the second half of her performance, she was being a complete asshat, to the point that Twilight wasn't willing to challenge her at first because Twilight didn't want ponies to see her as an egotistical bitch. The second time around, Trixie was so asspained at getting beat by Twilight and run out of town that she came back to fuck up Twilight's life.
Starlight, on the other hand, created the cult town because of her own personal beef with pony society as a whole. She then came back to try to get revenge on Twilight because she was pissed that Twilight and co. came and ended the way of life that she had created and liked. (post continues)
