you act like he rolls over for threats. he has stood up to every threat thats come his way, including ones that could have easily killed him, in order to protect those he cares about. he is also powerful when he needs to be as you can see in the canterlot games episode. him giving up power shows hes not interested in having it and wise enough to know who should have it.
in fact the only flaw he seems to have when it comes to being a great leader is he has trouble standing up to his friends.

in the end he did the right thing, but its still something he struggles with. every time he stands up to his friends it involves almost a full episode of them being destructive and him being forced into it. it will remain a flaw until he learns to stand up to them based on his own personal beliefs when theres not something serious pushing him into it.
