The reason they're absent is because Faust wanted to make them dead, but didn't think she'd be allowed. All the subsequent staff who've spoken about it have supported her original idea. It could be interpreted that way and that would be the reasonable inference, but it was ambiguous. Just generic "defeated." I haven't read the comics but I've seen caps of him in the comics, so I assume the comics interpreted his defeat as not killing him.

Sure, the show depicted him shattering into light, but this is the same show where he can turn into smoke (normally turning into smoke means you're dead) and in which turning someone into stone doesn't kill them.
