If Sunset isn't an orphan, then Celestia would be obligated to do this. How the fuck she would explain to Sunset's parents that their daughter vanished? They would have placed trust on Celestia to take care of their kid, and she would have just broken that trust. If Celestia couldn't take care of a single bratty girl, how the hell would she be fit to rule Equestria?

Because of this, I prefer to think of Sunset as an orphan, that was close to Celestia and no one else. That way, no one would give a fuck about Sunset's disappearance, it would be exclusively Celestia's problem, she would have no one to answer to.
