I find what it lacks in a fast moving plot it makes up for in character interaction and the songs are better than in Friendship Games, imo, but I do hate the fucking shipping shit which is the only thing ever tempting me of rating it lower....but if I get into that territory of thinking too hard about them I might even put EQG higher because of nostalgia and music so I just go by gut feeling

As a whole, no, but what does that even matter? The only reason for EQG hate at this point is AUTISM. It started because of morons jumping the ship in s3, which these people are still an overall cancer on the board, and because of people thinking it was going to somehow take over show, which it hasn't, it was a fun little spin off and remains just that, so there is literally no reason to hate it other than, AUTISM

From what I have seen most of EQG fans really like it for two reasons.
A. The character design
B. The characterization of Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle.

For both Sunset and Twilight they are interesting characters that overcome their internal conflicts in satisfying ways, something that is rarely done in the show and arguably once done well (with Discord).

Aside from that, the series really doesn't have much of note.

They're all shit, but if you asked me to rank them in order of "Least Bad" to "A Garbage Fire Fueled by Biological Waste," then this is what I'd say:

1. Friendship Games. The most competent film out of the bunch. It felt the most cohesive and, aside from the idiot ball being passed around like a hot potato, it didn't make me frustrated/bored/angry while watching it. That said, it's also highly forgettable and falls apart near the end. It's not bad, but it isn't really good, either.

2. EQG. It's awful, but it makes for great MST3k fodder if you're in the mood for that. It's such a train wreck that it manages to be fun to watch as it crashes and burns.

3. LoE. A mess that tries juggling about four different story threads and has no idea which one it should give the most focus to. I wanted it to turn into an 80s slasher film by the twenty minute mark.

And last and most certainly least,
5. RR. The reason for musical numbers in a musical is to convey exposition, character's thoughts/emotions, or a long scene that would take too much time if it was done conventionally into a song. Throughout its entire runtime, RR followed those conventions once. At least, as far as I remember. Every other song made the story grind to a complete halt so we could see a glorified music video. This movie bored me to tears and it ranks as one of the worst movies I've seen. Not very high, mind you, there's far worse out there, but it's definitely the worst entry in this series.

Even when the main populace of Equestria or CHS can't help our protagonists, they're never actively against them. So watching the sirens' influence slowly turn everyone, including the Humane 7, on one another added tension to the mission of stopping the Dazzlings, which was already proving difficult because it was going to take more then simply aiming the Elements at them to defeat them. All this, plus the fact that while the students and faculty hated each other, they all still hypnotically adored the Dazzlings; from the Humane 7's perspective, this is like trying to save people who would rather see you fail and your enemies win.

That's why Sunset's redemption arc fit perfectly with the conflict: she was already dealing with the fact that everyone hated her. She wanted to prove herself but wasn't sure how she was going to do it, especially since she wasn't yet comfortable with her newfound role as a friend of the Mane 6. The climax was glorious because it revealed why they couldn't defeat the Dazzlings before: they needed to let Shimmer know they had fully forgiven her, and she was given the chance to prove that she no longer cared about herself and her own wants, as in the first movie, but now desired first and foremost well-being of her friends and classmates.

tl;dr The conflict had a "us against the world" feeling (reminiscent of Twilight's trial in A Canterlot Wedding), and Shimmer's redemption storyline tied into the conflict succinctly.
