I think Gloriosa is - and always was - good. The Gloriosa we saw during most of the movie wasn't the real her. When she was overly exuberant, it was for the campers' benefit. Privately, when she was raging internally, it was because she was so stressed out. Then as Gaea, she was corrupted and possessed.

The only time we got a glimpse of the real Gloriosa was during that Crystal Ball event, when she finally had the burden lifted off of her shoulders and felt like she didn't have to hide anything or pretend anymore. And, yeah, her eyebrows were a lot less crazy at that point.

Also, that's an edited screencap. She was actually kind of cold at that part, having finally cracked under the pressure. I did feel bad for her that she felt so trapped.

Heh, I like Gloriosa's unique facial expressions. Those and her overall different design features (most notably her face) make me think she was an experiment. She certainly stands out next to the rest of the EqG characters.

The same is shown about SciTwi, but I strongly disagree. Both characters were in great stress caused by others and suddenly came upon the power to lash out. They weren't corrupted. They had someone breathe down their necks and then suddenly they were free to act on their repressed desires. I think the movies promote the idea that having enough of people and laying the righteous smack on them is bad, and that is an idea I very strongly disagree with. The only problem is when you cause collateral damage on the innocents.

Gloriosa was certainly pissed at the campers but for some reason she wanted to keep them there with her. I think Rich was going to take more than a physical thing away from her. For one reason or another Gloriosa is the responsible one. Losing the camp would be a very personal failure. Also I think that she is used to or enjoys being the one to take care of others. To be dependable and nurturing. As such the reason she trapped the campers was because she wanted to preserve the camp as a situation for her own satisfaction. Gaia Everfree was a possessive Mother Nature.

She could've grabbed all seven geodes and did this right from the start, but instead she accepted that she lost her land and chose to use some of the geodes to make the last week special for the kids. Sure, she still wanted to hold on to her camp, but encasing yourself, your brother, and trapping a bunch of kids and their chaperones in your camp isn't something a normal person willingly does, even after being endowed with "the power to lash out". It's insane, but Gloriosa was pretty much gone at that point. Sunset even points this out to Timber when he tries to reason with Gloriosa, saying that it's not his sister but "someone who's been consumed by Equestrian magic". Not to mention the fact that, when she is defeated and comes to, she has no recollection of what happened.

Also, note that there was no such thing as Gaea Everfree. She wasn't even an urban legend. She was just a fiction Timber created to cover Gloriosa's use of the geodes. Gloriosa didn't transform into a mystical magical ancient protector of the forest. There's just normal Gloriosa and then crazy, possessed Gloriosa.

I like to call this "Magic Corruption", almost a trope since it's happened so many times in the show or otherwise.

Basically, since Friendship magic rules the Pony universe, all good things evolve around it. When someone/pony doesn't understand friendship but gets ahold of powerful friendship magic, it turns them into some otherworldly being that attempts to complete their goals with force.
It happened to Sunset, Twilight, AND Gloriosa. (Can't remember any specific times in the show though)

With all the geodes in her possession and brute force available, Gloriosa had the option of opposing Filthy Rich rather than make the best of the month she had. And she acted accordingly.

Nobody considers her a villain. All she tried to do with her magic was give people a good memorable time. Then she acquired more power and decided not to give up on Everfree since she felt she had a shot at keeping it.

But one thing that baffles me is why didn't it dawn on her to take all the geodes from the start, and why did she keep returning to the quarry?

That's my point though. She did have the means to seal up the camp right from the start. As soon as Gloriosa learned what the geodes could do, she could've taken them all and barricaded the camp right from the beginning. But she didn't. She did try to make the last week of camp extra special for the kids.

The main point is that once Gloriosa took the last two geodes and transformed, it wasn't really her anymore. It kind of was, given the same desires to save the camp, but it also wasn't given the insanity of the objectives. This was a person who was under the influence of the magic. Sunset pointed this out. If Gloriosa was actually still in control, I sincerely doubt she would've imprisoned everyone, including herself and her brother. She wanted to save her camp, not trap people in.
